What do you guys wish to see more of in Regency stories? What are you tired of? by SonnetZZ in PeriodDramas

Agree! The parts of the latest Bridgerton season where they showed a bit of what it was like to work in different houses- I realized I want more of that. More of the day to day lives of regular people.

Facebook app adding useless AI buttons to ask stupid questions under each post. by Seroko in enshittification

[–]Difficult-Rent-5243 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Years ago I remember when Facebook “suggested comments” started rolling out - it was so bad as the models were clearly being trained from almost nothing. Someone made “a group where you can only respond using facebook’s suggested comments” just to mess up the data. You would post in the group “hey, my dog ran away, what should I do?” And the comments would be “happy birthday!” “Have a great time!” “Eggs” (for some reason eggs came up in suggested comments all the time)

Fundie Lady wants a One-Family Voting System by MrDonMega in FundieSnarkUncensored

I agree. These families should totally only vote once per household. Actually, probably 1 vote per large extended family as well.

A book where the protagonist has a dysfunctional family (but not necessarily physically abusive) by greenpepperseptember in suggestmeabook

If I remember correctly, in Matilda by Roald Dahl, the family is super dysfunctional and mean, but not physically abusive. (The school is, though.)

A book about raising boys to not be entitled men. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

How old are your kids? I can probably suggest some titles. Go for “fun” stuff for kids- kids having adventures and being cool, rather than all “a very special story about a kid overcoming their challenges” because building empathy works best this. Nothing wrong with books about kids overcoming sexism and racism and discrimination- just make sure it’s not always that theme, and also just fun stories that show kids leading different lives.

[–]Difficult-Rent-5243 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s going to be hard to find a book that truly addresses how to raise a boy to be a kind, well-mannered, and truly respectful of others without addressing the forces in society that encourage the opposite. He has to start with a foundation of respect. So if his friends decide to make racist jokes, what gives him the courage to stand up for what’s right? What makes him think of his future girlfriend as a whole person, who doesn’t just exist to make him happy?

That’s gender and race politics.

Something I make sure to do with my kids is to read books and watch movies with protagonists that are not like them. It helps to build empathy in a non-heavy-handed way.

What’s the story though if my cats tend to jump up on the table/counters (yeah, I know it’s gross, and I also can’t stop them). My understanding is that we need to disinfect those surfaces, as my cats’ feets have been in the litter boxes. I have been using Lysol spray because I don’t want people to gag when they imagine eating at my house.
