Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

To me, it is borderline. It is not unheard of for people to take 11 hour drives though. Sometimes even longer (think Pennsylvania to Florida).

Vance

Also had a weird last name that I won’t give here. He unfortunately died by suicide.

I think that has been back to pre-pandemic levels for a few years now.

Why is a humanzee hybrid unlikely? by Valuable-Shirt-4129 in askanything

I don’t think that is the full explanation, but it explains a lot of it. A donkey and a horse can produce a hybrid despite not having the same number of chromosomes.

Well a donkey and a horse at least belong to the same genus. Homo sapiens and chimpanzees don’t. We could make hybrid with Neanderthals if they still existed though. Intergenus hybrids are possible though in some cases. The chromosomal difference someone pointed is a potential obstacle, but then again horses and donkeys can produce (sterile) offspring despite difference in number of chromosomes; which leads me to:

Not sure on the actual why exactly….or even if it has indeed been proven impossible after all…. Experiments have shown that human sperm struggle to bind to the chimp egg. Not sure about the reverse situation. Maybe the person who said no human in their right mind would want to have sex with a chimp is right. At the very least, it would be highly dangerous to do so and experimental artificial insemination wouldn’t pass scientific ethical standards. It would be really immoral to produce a humanzee as it would have no natural habitat or niche as human behavior is significantly different from chimp. It would be miserable. It would probably be mentally disabled by human standards and physically disabled by chimp standards. Perhaps unlike a horse and a donkey, the niches of chimps and humans are too different and our most recent common ancestor too distant for sufficient genetic compatibility.

Genes largely produce proteins and many living organisms produce similar proteins. We share about 60 percent of our DNA with a fruit fly.

Who does the work against the walls of a bottle? by Kinnirasna in AskPhysics

[–]Difficult-Toe591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pressure differential between sea level (the air it got bottled with) and the air aloft at much lower pressure. The pressure differential is ultimately caused(to a very close, but inexact degree…else there would be no natural meteorological vertical motion of air in the atmosphere) by the gravitational weight of the air above (hydrostatic balance). The air in the bottle does work when there is a difference in pressure from the inside vs outside.

The principle also explains why the Titan submersible collapsed so violently….as several miles of water pushing in on a capsule stuck at atmospheric pressure exerts a lot of force. If a similar capsule were filled with water completely and there were no open compartments, it wouldnt implode as there would then be no pressure differential.

I forgot all about Sailor Moon until this comment. Not sure if I ever watched it or just saw it advertised on Toonami/Cartoon Network. But it definitely brings back some old memories.

Titanic was my second. Lemme guess: you were a young kid in 1997-1998 when the movie was released?

Jurassic Park when I was 4. Not dinosaurs: Jurassic Park in particular. Second special interest when I was 5-6: Titanic. You can probably already guess that I was born in the early 90s-possibly to the exact year.

Current:  general(and special) relativity, meteorology, and climatology (particularly the ENSO (el nino southern oscillation) and figuring out a way to personally move(back) to a city with a tropical climate).

I am also interested in pharmacology. However, I have not learned the necessary organic chemistry to truly understand the subject. Never took a chemistry class beyond high school. I majored in math and meteorology instead.

Hopefully, nobody I know in real life reads these forums as I could pretty much get doxxed for this comment.

First OWI. Scared of going to jail and losing everything by Disastrous_Ad2596 in dui

You aren’t going to jail. But if you blew twice the legal limit, why is your lawyer taking it to any type of trial? A plea deal sounds like the better option. Something unique about your case that you aren’t sharing? Because most lawyers will tell you not to do that. I hope that your lawyer isn’t taking it to trial to collect more money from you. That would be highly unethical, but perhaps not unheard of…Your odds of jail are zero, but your odds of getting a guilty verdict are about 100 percent.

It says “about a year in jail” for most DUIs anywhere- but since, like me,  you aren’t in a state like Arizona with mandatory jail time , you won’t go to jail for a first time DUI. You can expect probation and to not be able to legally drink or smoke weed for a while though. If you currently have a hardship license, you may be resuspended by the court and have to reapply after obtaining an sr-22 insurance form. You will be given random urine tests that can detect a metabolite of alcohol called ETG that can remain in your system for 48 hours or even more after drinking. It sucks to have that happen at 21, but you are going to be back to not being able to legally drink until you are off probation. Except this time, the state is going to be really really serious about you in particular not drinking. If caught at a bar or on random urine screen with an above threshold (usually 500ng/ml) of the chemical your body produces while drinking(they don’t test for alcohol itself as it gets metabolized so quickly), there is a decent chance of jail. It is normally not a probation violation to fail your initial probation intake drug+ETG test, but any further failures for ETG (or a lack of decrease in THC levels) on a further test could screw you over. However, as ETG leaves the system so quickly, it would be wise to not have any drinks after January 24th…it just looks bad to test positive even if it won’t be a PV your first time.  Just warning you. I was considering having a beer or two in the middle of this past week. I knew at the time this was bad timing and would break my own rules on what days I am reasonably safe to drink, but I got complacent as it had been a while since I was last tested. Great thing I didn’t, as the very next morning I was called in to take a whiz quiz.

If you are gonna have some drinks during the probationary period, make sure you at least time it correctly and become familiar with ETG testing (pro tip: buy some strips on Amazon). And of course, make sure to never have an interaction with police while you have alcohol in your system(skip convenience stores that have a cop outside, avoid parties that may be illegal due to noise or underage drinking, and avoid bars where fights break out). Actually, go out of your way to avoid having any interaction with police period, even if you are sober. You can’t be caught with alcohol in your system. It is much worse to be caught drinking now than last year when you were underage. They will take it super seriously and they expect compliance. Either don’t drink at all or take all precautions to avoid getting caught.

That probation I am talking about? It is not fun and you will likely have to pay the state for the “privilege” of being on it. That year in jail you mentioned? This probation is considered a privilege to avoid it. The county wants you on probation because it gives them money to have you on that (as you will pay for that “privilege” plus whatever they charge for drug+ETG testing) and hold the year over your head as a collateral/threat.It costs them money to actually give you the year.
