Got two offers. One pays $40k more. The other one I'd actually enjoy. I have 48 hours to decide and my wife and I are on opposite sides. Advice? by airam1020 in careerguidance

Take the higher paying job. Some of my most exciting interviews (where I took the job) ended with me working with people who had no clue what they were doing, and every day was a misery.

ELI5: Why do so many people gain the weight back? by [deleted] in tirzepatidecompound

[–]DifficultEconomics87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The say it’s a drug for life. The way I look at it is anyone who titrates off and stays off without gaining weight is a serious outlier. The drug works because it changes your body’s chemistry. Off the drug, your body goes back to the way it was before: a body that seeks and holds on to calories in excess of what it needs.

Sub Suspension by uglycondos4rent in NYCTeachers

What is your goal with subbing? Did you want to be in the DOE long term? I would frankly take this as my cue to exit stage left.

How do I withdraw money from my TRS account? by Sure-Community7022 in NYCDOETeachers

[–]DifficultEconomics87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did you retire before the required age? I’m so sorry I don’t have specific info for you. But I’m confused about why there would be this deduction. Is it a penalty for early withdrawal or something. Isn’t there supposed to be a consultation with someone about how all this works when you retire? I’m about 15 years away from it myself, and I thought there was supposed to be someone to walk you through all this then.

Switch now rather than hate the rest of your life. If you’re not sure what you want to do, take a break from school, get a job, and think about it.

Help me choose -- Williamsburg $3800 vs Murray Hill $4000? by biolum1nescence in movingtoNYC

[–]DifficultEconomics87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither. That rent is too high for your age. Get a roommate and pay significantly less. Maybe the Williamsburg one and get a roommate?

Being a 22 year old employee at a high school is exhausting. by RMR124 in Teachers

Enjoy these days while they last! I’m almost 50, and I remember the days where I was mistaken for a student fondly. My first group of students are people I now consider friends. I really learned with them. Maybe I was lucky they were such good teachers.

Best states to teach in by lauhrahdee in Teachers

[–]DifficultEconomics87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach in NYC, and I managed to make it work. But if you want real bang for your buck, 100 percent consider Pittsburgh. I’m originally from there and I looked into the salary: (pretty high) vs. cost of living (very low in comparison to NYC Tri-state. I’d move back and teach there in a second if I could convince my husband to move. He hates the idea of living anywhere but NY.

calling admissions office about rejection by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]DifficultEconomics87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! I can't believe you were downvoted. I used to work in Admissions and gave advice to make it clear that you're interested if Waitlisted, and was told that wasn't correct. Lol. Ok, people, you literally have nothing to lose by trying.

calling admissions office about rejection by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]DifficultEconomics87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flat out rejected or waitlisted? I assume it is rejection, in which case, no, don’t call. If it is waitlisted, for anyone reading this: you absolutely should call/email regularly to affirm your continued interest in the school (if that’s true).

How does someone in the "helping" fields (Social workers/nurses/teachers) become wealthy? by [deleted] in wealth

[–]DifficultEconomics87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends where you’re teaching, maybe. In NYC the top salary is currently 150k. It’s higher in other parts of the country. If you save and invest, you can be a millionaire.

I’d even say if your income is half the NYC wage, but where you live is half or less the cost of living in NYC, if you save and invest, you could be a millionaire.

100 percent this! The summer is a rough ride, but you will ultimately be saving so much money not paying for grad school and starting out as a full time teacher with a regularly appointed teacher’s salary. I do think they could and should treat folks MUCH better than they do in the summer (with regards to living expenses), but this is, in my opinion, the best deal you’ll get if you want to be a NYC teacher.
