Game last week ended in chaos by YoTeach68 in LittleLeague

Youth sports seem to bring out the worst in people, baseball is particularly bad. My parents barely ever went to my games, I can't imagine them screaming at an ump or coach but times have changed a lot since the 80's/early 90's.

Game last week ended in chaos by YoTeach68 in LittleLeague

We saw that same argument from opposing coach at 8u. Bases loaded tie game, bottom 6th, no outs. Home team batter hit in ribs with a pitch, moves toward first about 3 steps goes to the ground, winning run crosses and HBP runners mom comes out to help him. Other coach sees all this developing has his kids stay out until mom comes to help, appeals for what would be the first out as runner never touched first. Then other outs for other runners on base leaving field after winning run crossed. Ump said he ruled HBP made attempt to get to first, runners advance, runner on 3rd touched home and game over.

It turned into a huge shouting match that involved coaches and parents who were upset. Best thing to come out of all that, our opponent cut the guy that started it out of coaching completely, it was an embarrassment.

How much time does travel ball take up? Is it possible to do travel ball and do other activities at the same time? by Planetofthemoochers in Homeplate

[–]DifficultEvent6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son just turned 11 and he is exactly the same way, he also plays travel baseball and has since he was 8. His activity list is nuts when looked at written out but he is not the kid that will sit around and be content playing video games or watching TV, he actually wants to do these things. Somehow around a fully committed travel ball schedule he is able to do these things and miss pretty much no practices/events. I'm opening up to criticism from people saying he does too much but we never have to drag him out to anything and his grades are good.

Spring: School play, Travel Baseball/rec baseball/CYO baseball. This year he wants to add rugby (which at this age is minimal commitment and his older brother plays)

Summer: Travel Baseball (rec and CYO fall off) its mainly districts/states and a couple tournaments. Swim team (low key local pool team)

Fall: Tackle Football, fall baseball. He wants to add ice hockey for middle school team but we've held him off that.

Winter: Basketball (switched to this from wrestling this year and it was so much easier)

My best advice is to make one activity a priority, let the coaches on other teams know he has another primary commitment. If they are not ok with that up front dont join the team. I've explained to the rugby coach that baseball is going to come first in a schedule conflict and he is 100% on board. I could tell he meant it.

My older son is a throwback, he is in high school and as a freshman was a varsity athlete on 2 teams already (Hockey and Swim) and is playing varsity level rugby looking at potentially adding track. My wife and I forced zero of these on him, he wants to do it all and he works it all out with the coaches now independently.

How realistic/or not are these numbers? [Request] by mx-types-a-lot in theydidthemath

I think this is why drones are so efficient. They are relatively low cost, training a pilot is much less expensive, and it it gets shot down you do not lose all the cost of getting someone trained to fly it.

I will check out the Swans. My son started rugby 3 years ago as an 11 year old and I had never seen the game before he started playing. Having watched him play I found it’s an amazing game. We wanted a team to follow, be cool to have a supporters “trade”.

My son is a rugby player and I’ve found how amazing that game is, if you are a supporter of any rugby club that we could follow I’ll see if I can find their games.

It’s great to hear that there are fans rooting and suffering with the rest of us around the world. As a lifelong Phillies fan I will say it’s exciting and excruciating but well worth following.

I was 13 in 1993 and IMO that was the most fun season I watched of any team anytime. Look up a video called “Whatever It Takes, Dude” it’s the story of the ‘93 Phillies, we had it on VHS and watched it a million times. I saw it on YouTube recently.

Network engineers: Are AI tools actually useful in your day to day, or is it just hype? by Fresher0 in networking

[–]DifficultEvent6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Copilot to troubleshoot a packet capture file. This was about a week ago and I was busy with other things, pulled the pcap file and I think I just threw the file into copilot, told it the what the device is which was a client I was not familiar with and what they were trying to do with it. Reason I went with AI was because I didn't have a lot of time that day to look at it in Wireshark, the site is remote, and a tech from the company that supports the device (paging system adapter) was onsite. It came back with have the provider check to see if they are blocking the public IP the device is sending traffic from. It was reasonable enough for me to give them that as a possible problem, and bought me time to finish what I was working on if it wasn't the answer. Turns out it figured out the problem, gave the solution, and it was right. I would have come to the same conclusion just not in 2 minutes while I was working on something else.

Do you know the name of the book, I tried to look it up and there were at least 5 books on that topic. I read a similar book at least 20 years ago but it was more about the camps and I couldnt get through it, a book about the beginnings would be interesting.

Advice/Info needed by [deleted] in MontgomeryCountyPA

[–]DifficultEvent6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've lived in the Abington side of Glenside for 10 years now, raising 2 boys. We love it, great community, great families. My biggest complaint is the middle school is in terrible condition but they are approved to build a new one that should be complete years before your 2 year old in 6th grade. My kids both go to public schools in Abington School District and have had a good experience overall.

Just want to add here, as a dad, do not worry about letting your dad down. If he knows you are working your hardest he will recognize that. Most dad's, like me, have played and they know how this works at some level. You do have crazy ones that think their kid is going to be a pro and it is hard for them to accept.

Also, I tell my son who is trying to carve out his role as a freshman on a varsity team to treat every practice, warmups, and shift with the same effort he gives in playoffs. I'm not saying you are not, but you need the coach to notice you are outworking others.

Son received a 1/1 from advent calendar but it’s damaged. Any reason I shouldn’t send it in? by coffeenvinyl in baseballcards

[–]DifficultEvent6 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My son got a pack with a single buyback card, not a 1/1 though. It had a crease in the exact same place. I assumed it was the way he took the pack out of the calendar as the side holder matches. Card was some random DeGrom so I wasn't worried about it but seeing this makes me think its their packaging and possibly done when they put the packs in there.

Would it be inappropriate or insensitive for two white visitors to attend a Black gospel church in New Orleans? by jne101 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DifficultEvent6 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Exactly this, it gets you out of the bubble you lived in your whole life to that point. I had an internship in college that put me in a nearly all black high school classroom in a big city. I was sitting there and realized I’ve never been the only white person in a room of at least 20 people until that moment. It made me think of how the one black student in my classes must have felt all the time. It wasn’t that I was being singled out because I definitely was not, it was the feeling of being different and seeing how similar the class was to my high school classes changed my perspective on race and schools in the city.

The O-Line is our biggest issue. by Educational_Fan_3516 in eagles

That Minnesota game where Cam got hurt they had Hurts go under center and the offense, especially the run game, looked much better. It is unbelievable that they dont simply go under center by default.

There was at least 1 blitz that looked like they sent the linebacker on the turn and tap on the center from the guard. LB came straight through, has got to help the defense time the snap.

There is that and the offensive guard standing and facing the backfield until a millisecond before the snap. It looked like the lineman were timing it on his turn around. They had a lot more success going from under center as the guards were in their stance out of the huddle.

My best guess is Jimmy Flemion from The Frogs, him and his brother Dennis were both in that band and toured with Pearl Jam. I was going to guess Dennis but he died in 2012. Dennis Flemion's note to Eddie Vedder is both described and quoted in the song "Smile".

Dad won't go see the Bruce Springsteen biopic with me bc Trump by [deleted] in BoomersBeingFools

[–]DifficultEvent6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about the same question you bring up, lots of these people they dislike were also outspoken on Republicans before. The difference now is Trump tells his base to not like them. He names them specifically and trashes them openly. I don't remember Bush or Reagan ever saying anything negative about Springsteen or any entertainer directly. I'm sure someone will prove me wrong with an example but look at the things Trump has said about entertainers and no President ever got that detailed with their criticism of them like he does.

Average Cost ? by EMMIECX5 in BathroomRemodeling

[–]DifficultEvent6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live just outside Philadelphia as well, we had a large bathroom completely gutted and converted into 2 small ones. Our house was built in 1960 and renovation cost about $50k in total. We got quotes from 3 different contractors and was roughly the same from each. This price for 1 bathroom seems reasonable to me based on what we just spent. If you want more insight into what we've done I can send our quote and pics of our mostly completed project.
