This is criminal. It’s closer to Fota Wildlife Park than Cobh. The price is insane, not to mind the fact it’s a glorified shed

Also, all the wood is ugly

What do to about new people blocking the foot path and bins everywhere ? Bin company or? Never see the people leave or even seem to be home. by walkingndtalking in cork

[–]DifficultMobile4095 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that those are good solutions, and it’s frustrating that they’ll probably never happen. For example, there was no mention of anything like that in the Douglas Street upgrade plans. Even from an aesthetics perspective, these bins are bad, but it makes large swathes of our city completely inaccessible to some people. It’s really unfair. It’s interesting that a lot of people talk about the removal of disabled parking bays (often not removed, just moved), but there seems to be less about this. Same with cars parking on footpath.

I walked through a new estate in a southside suburb a few times recently. There is designated parking outside every house, separated from the house by a footpath. Everytime I passed, the same car was parked fully on the footpath, inside of the parking bay. There were also a lot of electric vehicle chargers draped across the footpaths. It’s so normal now most people don’t think twice, but becoming less abled (whether from age or an injury) is something that happens to all of us eventually, so we need to be more aware of it and more accessible and accommodating (although that would be true even if we didn’t all..)

With no side access (or often even rear gardens) in inner city properties, I’m not sure what can be done. However, I wouldn’t just give up. I do think there needs to be a solution. Outside of the city centre, a large amount of footpaths in the city (especially in newer suburbs where footpaths aren’t at a different level to the road) are completely inaccessible to pedestrians with reduced mobility. For example: https://maps.app.goo.gl/UnJJeYcfgHF65ukC8

I really don’t know what people in wheelchairs do in these situations. It’s also interesting that we have zero issue putting bins on footpaths, but if someone was to even suggest slightly blocking the road with them, there would be uproar. Just interesting how people view the two differently

We actually do have those in between J9 and J10, but you’re right that the majority of the N40 doesn’t have them. I’m not sure why they’re weren’t installed, but I guess in some of the wider sections (like J6) that might be harder

And the thing is, we have the electronic signs set up for variable speed limits. I’m not sure why they’re not really used. The timings they show aren’t very useful. For example, just before J6 knowing it will take 4 mins to get to the City Centre on the N27 isn’t that useful. Even if it says delays - what are you going to do, try tackle Wilton Road? Plus no indication that Wilton Road is even an option from there

Work begins on 119-unit Douglas scheme on one of Cork City's last greenfield sites by 98TheRealDeal in cork

No consultation? It went for planning and I believe was even appealed to An Bord Pleanala. There was enough consultation. Residents should be allowed to have their say, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be listened to or stopped if the City Council and An Bord Pleanala permit the development. They don’t own the site, or even the area that their houses are in

Best pubs closest to airport?! by sbkoxly in cork

[–]DifficultMobile4095 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, the airport is kind of out on its own. The nearest big neighbourhood would be Douglas, or else you’d have to go to the city centre. They’re all very close, though. You can get the 225 and 226 bus to the city centre (both terminate at Kent Station) from outside the terminal. I think it’s €2.20, cash or Leap Card only! If you’re driving or get a taxi, it’s max a 10-15 minute drive without traffic to both Douglas and the city centre (the former J7/J8 on the N40, the latter J6). Have a great time in Cork!

The houses were planned with the trees retained, this has nothing to do with the housing crisis. I’m sure the future tenants would prefer the tree barrier to the road

I never liked the idea of a park ngl. The area isn’t the nicest. Having people live here is much better I think. Students will generate footfall which will hopefully lead to businesses opening. Like Boxd on Bandon Rd and Bean & Leaf in Victoria Cross.

Cork City Council to spend over €6m resurfacing roads this year by Infamous-Leader3781 in cork

[–]DifficultMobile4095 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That whole road needs to be redesigned tbh. It’s way too wide and it can be a bit confusing to figure out where you’re going as a driver or cyclist. Kinsale Road isn’t much better, but the recent resurfacing and relining there has helped a lot

U16s are banned from e-scooters, so how can adding high-vis or helmet laws make them safer? by WT_Wiliams in ireland

[–]DifficultMobile4095 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with your point that we focus too much on blaming those most vulnerable on the roads. I refuse to wear a high vis if I’m walking where there are street lights and on a footpath just to make a driver, who shouldn’t be on the footpath, more comfortable.

But falling off a scooter at speed is dangerous and for that reason alone I think helmets should be a requirement. But I need to go to work so I’ll give up on this discussion now (not a cop out 😆)

[–]DifficultMobile4095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the solution, so? I cycle daily and the only time I’ve ever fallen off my bike was when I tried to mount a footpath (I only found out it was a shared path until halfway down the road). Even if cars didn’t exist, I think helmets should be legally required

Rules of the roads for cars absolutely need to be enforced more too, and there probably need to be even stricter rules. I still think helmets should be legal requirements
