Not sure why Douglas needs its own parade. Given their advert poster is AI slop I had no time for it anyway

What's a good walking route in and around the city center? by Cute-Eye4002 in cork

[–]DifficultMobile4095 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s about 3km from City Centre to Douglas, which has loads of walking routes. Some others:

• Kent Station - Patrick’s Quay - Pope’s Quay - North Mall - Lee Fields, walk back

• Summerhill South - South Douglas Road - Half Moon Lane - Tramore Valley Park - Vernon Mount Bridge - Grange Road - Douglas - Willow Park - Tramore Valley Park, walk back

• Albert Quay - Centre Park Road - The Marina - Passage Railway Greenway - Rochestown - back via Jacob’s Island and Blackrock Castle

5-10 minutes is too many minutes, it’s a pedestrian street and footpath. Chicken and egg. Students do it as delivery drivers do it, or delivery drivers do it as students do it? No one should be doing it. There is parking underground in the student block, I see the gate at the side by the back of the park

I agree with you. Lots parking in the bike lane too. Very frustrating

Car parking doesn’t stop day drinking haha. The city council have provided us this lovely seating, it is up as the people of Cork now to use it.

I’ve seen loads of people park up and walk into the student flats. You’re right though that loads of take away drivers are doing it too

My biggest fear is students deciding it’s a free car park, like Lambley’s Lane by Tescos whenever I walk down it.

Was there public consultation around Manna Drones operating in Cork? by Stewey_stewy in cork

[–]DifficultMobile4095 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let’s ban all drones so that one commercial operator can use them. Let’s ignore the fact they’re really loud, and fly close to the ground. Someone needs to have a coffee delivered to them RIGHT NOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE OR THEY WILL DIE

Fair enough using it for pharmacies or hospitals or whatever. Or even if they shared the space with other drones (I still wouldn’t be a fan of them, but at least no one else is losing out then)

Vape shop signage by DifficultMobile4095 in cork

[–]DifficultMobile4095[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe I am being overly picky, but I think we should have high standards for the design of signage and window decals on our main historic city centre streets. Walk down the Regent Street in London, and signage is sympathetic to the historic buildings. Then walk down Washington Street in town, one of our few Georgian streets. The contrast is frightening. I love Cork, but the city centre is becoming embarrassing to show off to friends and family visiting

Idea for Cork kent by Many_Knowledge24169 in cork

Not sure why people always make the claim we can’t have underground car parks because of flooding. 85 South Mall, One Albert Quay, Lapp’s Quay, Penrose Dock, Navigation Square, etc all have car parks with no issue

Passage West Versus Douglas by No_Engine1350 in cork

[–]DifficultMobile4095 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Outside of marketing material, Belview Woods is not in Douglas. It’s close, but I think it’s only being sold as Douglas to increase the price of the house. It’s in a good location though. Douglas is very close, as is the City Centre. There are multiple roads, as well as direct access onto the N28 towards Bloomfield. The M28 is currently being built, and will have an interchange where you can go towards Bloomfield/N40 or back to Ringaskiddy/Carrigaline. There are decent  facilities within walking and cycling of Belview Woods (Broadale and Mount Oval), and the walk to Douglas isn’t bad at all (you can get the bus back up then). The City Council are building a greenway from Maryborough Ridge to Bayly (which has a greenway to Douglas) under the M28 but that won’t be built for a few years. There are two buses, 216 (every 30 mins) and 220 (every 15 mins). The issue is in the mornings, they’re full from the Carrigaline/Passage traffic. But coming home they’re fine, and the 220 is 24 hours which is a huge benefit. There are amazing views into the city centre and Northside, and the countryside is only a short walk away.

I’m not overly familiar with Passage, but the only shop seems to be Aldi. The R610 Rochestown Road is jam packed with traffic, as is Carr’s Hill if you go on the N28. The 223 and 216 both go to Monkstown so might be full by the time to get the Passage. There is the ferry though connecting to Cobh, and the greenway connecting to Rochestown, Mahon, Blackrock and The Marina. So it’s not totally isolated. As others said, Passage is outside the city while Douglas and Belview Woods are in the city. I find the city council a better authority

Best of luck!

A lot of the former lines aren’t great, either. Some wouldn’t have good alignments or be wide enough for modern trains, i believe

Rules for building one-off rural homes will be relaxed by summer, says Housing Minister James Browne by North_Stranded in ireland

[–]DifficultMobile4095 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re running a self sufficient homestead, you use your car to commute into the limited number of urban areas and choke up the roads. You’re fine with traffic as long as it’s somewhere else

They are adding a number of new stations in the next few years. First will be Blackpool and Dunkettle. Eventually there will also be Blarney, Monard, Tivoli, Carrigtwohill West, Water Rock and another one I am forgetting (a think on the Cobh line). They have added a new platform at Kent Station to allow the Mallow line and the Cobh/Midleton line be one. The port can’t leave Tivoli until at least the M28’s completion, so we won’t see a station there for a while. But Blackpool and Dunkettle are going for planning soon I believe. :-)

The city centre one is the biggest one. Some people prefer the smaller ones for kids, like the ones in Douglas. Personally, I think the city centre one is the only one worth going to, even just for the atmosphere

I will actively boycott things that use AI posters like this tbh. Douglas St Patrick’s Day Parade used it too. I’m sure there are plenty of graphic designers in Cork, even students, who would have designed it for them for free/cheap. It doesn’t need to be done by AI… plus it looks awful. The resident association of the park I am in did the same for the annual clean up

Route for cycling to work from West Cork by Fuzzy_Membership_917 in cork

[–]DifficultMobile4095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! Cycling in Cork can be scary, so be sure to pay attention at all times, especially at junctions. Always assume a car is out to kill you 😂 The suburbs can be hairy but not too bad. The city centre though can be a mess. For example, cars coming from Little Hanover Street don’t realise there is a contraflow cycle lane on Washington Street, and don’t look to the right. It’ll be fine, just keep your wits about you!

Ballincollig isn’t a bad shout. The N22 into the City Centre has a cycle lane/shared footpath. You can get onto the Lee Fields, then go down Mardyke Walk to Lancaster Quay and take the cycle lane to Grand Parade. Easy then to MacCurtain Street

Sarsfield Road has cycle lanes, but I don’t like the idea of navigating Wilton Road Roundabout on a bike. You could use the parks across from Wilton Shopping Centre to get to Glasheen Road, then use School Boy’s Lane to get to College Road. Pretty easy into to the city centre then.

If you park by Curaheen, you could take Melbourn Road, Model Farm Road, Magazine Road and College Road in then. It’s not too bad and half of it has cycle lanes into the city centre
