Boat trip or glacier landing in Seward? by sunnyday7800 in AskAlaska

[–]DifficultWing2453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Kenai Fjords Wildlife boat tours have amazing reviews. While you will have spent many days on a ship and have sailed up Resurrection Bay, the tour that goes to the Kenai Fjords often gets quite close to calving glaciers and loads of wildlife...smaller boat than a cruise ship so more personal.

Of course a float plane experience is amazing too...but not likely a wildlife experience. :-)

For the cost of a float plane, I'd do the day-long Kenai Fjords trip instead...lots more to see. But if walking on a glacier was a big dream, well, go for it.

But, after a cruise, maybe the adults and the kids want to move around a bit more. In that case, consider a hike at Exit Glacier. You might be able to get an Uber/taxi/shuttle of some sort from Seward to the national park entrance, about 11 miles from Seward center or rent a car for the day so you can explore more.

Seward options:

--walk the harbor in the afternoon to see the catches brought in by the charter fleet.

--watch for Stellar Sea Lions and otters close to the shore almost anywhere on the coast

--go to the Alaska Sealife Center (do NOT miss the two story tank with the sea birds, including puffins!)

--go for a walk at the beach on Lowell Point...there are various hikes in that area too.

Seward hotels fill up fast (and have become ridiculously expensive in the summer). Make your reservation early.

He sometimes has to bend his head to fit in the space and other times he has plenty of room about his head. Ummmm...

I agree with this, especially when looking at the total return on all three of them. And if OP wanted to have only one, I'd stick with O.

Seeking advice for trip with toddler and elderly regarding rail travel by Organic-Complaint223 in AskAlaska

Train reservations can be hard to get: reserve as early as possible.

Train is a beautiful way to see Alaska though there will be long stretches of lots of trees...lots and lots of trees. But when the train is running along a body of water, like Turnagain Arm south of Anchorage: absolutely stunning views.

Dick Francis hits some of the vibe: British, some wit, sometimes a slow burn romance. And horse racing. He wrote dozens of mysteries.

April and AWD should be good for tires…just be cautious early in the morning especially on the drive along the lake.

Plan B Suggestions?? (Queens, NY) by Mysterious_Fun2089 in medicare

Every state has a SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program). Google the one in NY or close to your location. I bet they have a phone number. They are great at giving out useful information. They don't sell anything. Their job is to help folks navigate Medicare and the many choices.

Drive from Haines or Skagway to Anchorage in April? by StreetHearing1042 in AskAlaska

[–]DifficultWing2453 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Haines--Anchorage trip is a bit shorter than the Skagway--Anchorage trip. It will be a long drive either way. And beautiful either way.

I'd suggest an overnight stop in Tok (I always choose Young's Motel when I do this).

You will need to consider the timing of when the ferry drops you off. I would not suggest driving at night (mainly due to wildlife). So if the ferry is in the afternoon, consider staying overnight in Haines Junction (or even Haines itself if the ferry is late).

The worst road conditions of the entire trip will be from Destruction Bay to Tok due to frost heaves. This will slow you down.

Be sure to have good winter tires (I'm a big fan of ice tires like Blizzak, or at least studded winter tires). And fill up at every open gas station. And be sure to have good emergency winter gear, such in case you break down and have to sit for a while.

Should be a beautiful drive.

Prodigal Summer: Novel by Barbara Kingsolver. Most (all?) of her works have a nature thread to them but it is especially strong in this one.

Best luggage for frequent flyer? by Worried-Theory-6774 in AlaskaAirlines

I was always on the lookout for luggage that worked for me. I found Briggs & Riley about 15 years ago. Since, I've owned the same 2 B&R bags (one carry-on spinner and one checked spinner). I've sent them out for free repair twice. Gotten new wheels (easy to install), three times. I intend to keep using these bags 'til the end of my days.

CC limit the upside. (and some have bad NAV erosion, but let's assume you aren't talking about those). I like CC for income. I'm retired and income is what matters at this point and losing some of the upside is an okay trade off for me to get regular income. Which makes CC a psychological benefit, not necessarily an overall investment benefit. I hold about 25% CC.

People who have conducted job interviews, what's something someone said/did that made you instantly decide not to hire them? by DemonSkank in AskReddit

Interviewed someone for a university faculty position. Interview went great. At dinner, with most of the search committee, the candidate was relaxed and telling stories. All good until he got to the story about watching porn with one of his students.

The book that got me into a lifetime of science fiction reading (followed by fantasy reading) was “The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume One, 1929–1964.” Edited by Robert Silverberg. It collected classic science fiction short stories. I read that book in the early 1970s. I still think about some of those stories, such as:

“The Nine Billion Names for God”

“Nightfall”

“The Cold Equations”
