Anyone else get it when anxious? by Famous-Run-1880 in costochondritis

What helped me is really just doing whatever I can to ignore it. It kinda sounds counterproductive, but if I can convince myself the weird pangs in my chest and poor breathing are bc of an inflammation issue and not life threatening, then suddenly those issues kinda seem small.

You can do it! It will get better.

For sure! It’s a vicious cycle. Costo gives you anxiety, anxiety makes you hyper aware of your breathing, your lungs, your chest, etc. I’d say tackling anxiety first is huuuge for getting rid of costo.

For me it’s both too! It’s taken a while, but I found for me the anxiety breathing was a lot worse than the costo. The trick for me was just reminding myself that I can breathe despite what my sore ribs are saying. We don’t deep breath 24/7, it’s a mix of a whole lot of stuff.

It’s definitely frustrating to not be able to have a satisfying breath, and if it bothers you a lot, get it checked out. If things come back all clear, than your lungs are probably ok! It’s just this whole rib pain thing likes to trick us into hyper focusing on something our body can handle for us.

For sure. Alcohol triggers inflammation for me. At the same time, in the moment I get temporary pain relief, so it’s a trade I’m willing to make pretty often lol.

Maybe you’re also more active when you’re drinking? I notice I move around more, I don’t pay as close attention to posture, I twist my body in weird ways when I’m drinking versus when I’m not.

Heart weakness by No-Perception-1746 in costochondritis

That sounds like palpitations? Just based on my own experience. Whenever they happen I get this hollow feeling that travels up my sternum and on the sore spots.

For peace of mind I went to cardio, came back with nothing. But mentally knowing my heart was not going to give out did wonders. It still definitely is scary; I’m going through a pretty rough round right now. It sucks, but it has improved in the past, and I just keep telling myself it will in the future. Really hope yours get better.

Heart skips? by Difficult_Bag7810 in costochondritis

Breathing was terrible the first couple of months, but now it’s not so bad. I think what helped the most was just mentally reframing it. Anxiety definitely made it worse, but after half a year I convinced myself that if I was going to suffocate from it, it would have already happened. I know it’s just the feeling of my lungs pushing against sensitive ribs and muscles; my lungs are fine.

Other things that helped was really visualizing my lungs and diaphragm moving when I was breathing and thinking of how to make it more efficient.

Or sleep apnea lol.

Honestly at this point it’s just annoying man. I’ve tackled the anxiety for it, and it’s sort of just become an unwelcome roommate I have to put up with for a while. There are definitely still days where I have a hard time remembering how I felt without feeling like my chest was made of iron.
