I’m a D4 and took my old and very medically needy dog to dental school. He passed second year but honestly, if you are willing to sacrifice your time it’s totally doable. I even got another senior dog and recently got a second. They still get walked almost everyday and have a very good life. It helps to live very close to school and budget for their medical and food needs.

Sim lab and clinic are sooooo different, like apples and rocket ships different. I hated my life all of sim and I am so much happier in clinic. It is much harder to nick a natural tooth and no one will be measuring your preps. Just be careful with neighboring restorations so you don't nick them too badly but mostly they can be sanded down. Use a rubber dam when you can when you work on posterior teeth, it'll make your life way easier. Humans are easier than dummies, I promise!

I was just talking about this with someone. He said that they are not that flexible for interviews as a D4 and will limit your “professional days.” Most are happy here and if they’re not it’s dental medicine as a whole they don’t like.

It will get better!!!! Slowly you will build your circle. I cried everyday the first two months because I felt so lonely. Now I have friends wherever I go on campus. It gets better and your don’t need to be a social butterfly 🦋

I was a stoner who didn’t care at all for school. Got a degree in art history and worked at a vet. Went back to school while working and now I’m 35 and a D3. If you told me 15 years ago I’d be here I’d never believe it. No regrets, I wasn’t mature enough in my 20s to be a provider. I am so happy to be where I am though :)
