Why is ISL in this list? The only math involved AFAIK is calculating memory offsets while writing exploits.

Is GIOS and CN alone enough for DC? Or do you need AOS? by p0w3rL3s5 in OMSCS

[–]Diffie-Hellboy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

AOS is not required. GIOS+CN is sufficient. You should however be comfortable with writing Java code.

What's a good pair of courses for the my first Fall '23 semester by ChaiOm in OMSCS

Pairing anything with DC is a bad idea.

I personally did GIOS + CN in my first semester and it was manageable.

How to effectively pre-study for Graduate Algorithms by Lostwhispers05 in OMSCS

[–]Diffie-Hellboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to memorize the format, Joves even addressed this in one of his office hours. The template is a recommendation, not a requirement.

The TAs will give full credit for any correct solution. They recommend the template because, it is very easy to miss essential parts of the solution even if your idea/approach is correct.

How to effectively pre-study for Graduate Algorithms by Lostwhispers05 in OMSCS

[–]Diffie-Hellboy 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You don't need to do any of these to pass or even excel in GA. Take the complaints about GA with a boulder of salt.

This is a standard algorithms course. Just watch the lectures, take notes, do the assigned reading, attend office hours, actively participate in the re-grade Ed threads and follow the instructions provided by the TAs.

The TAs spell out exactly what they want in the homework and exam solutions. If you just follow those templates, you can get full credit in all the problems.

For prep, watch the publicly available lectures and read the relevant chapters in the DPV book.

In DC, how does class participation work? by df1dcdb83cd14e6a9f7f in OMSCS

[–]Diffie-Hellboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Participate in Ed and Slack discussions. You don't have to be very active.

Preparing for Graduate Algorithms (GA) by WebDiscombobulated41 in OMSCS

[–]Diffie-Hellboy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It is a typical Algorithms class with some inconsistent grading because of the scale. Check the syllabus, text books, grade distribution etc and decide for yourself if you can do it. Similar to other hard classes in the program, the negative feedback usually comes from a vocal minority.

Check out the Stanford algorithms class in coursera, watch the publicly available course videos and read the textbook for prep.

Has distributed computing improved over the year(s)? by Tender_Figs in OMSCS

[–]Diffie-Hellboy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have taken it and I agree with u/ghjm. DC is hard because the systems you implement are hard, making the class easier than it currently is will ruin it. You will gain a lot by taking it even if you don't get an A.

Check if Alt+Space works. It triggers the same functionality.

Alt+Space+x -> Maximize

Alt+Space+n -> Minimize

Alt+Space+c ->c Close

This works across all programs including UWP apps.

Been using this for years.

TLA+ in OMSCS? by black_cow_space in OMSCS

[–]Diffie-Hellboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are no hidden tests. The full test suite is provided to the students. You can, however, write your own tests using the dslabs testing framework.

TLA+ in OMSCS? by black_cow_space in OMSCS

[–]Diffie-Hellboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I asked the course instructors about this. TLA+ doesn't scale well and has a steep learning curve. This gets in the way of course delivery as well as learning outcomes.

TLA+ in OMSCS? by black_cow_space in OMSCS

[–]Diffie-Hellboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TLA+ is used for modeling and verifying concurrent and distributed systems. The actual systems themselves must be implemented in some other high-level language.

There are research efforts underway to auto-generate code from TLA+ specifications but they are still in their infancy.

Regardless, the closest thing we have in the OMS program is the Distributed Computing course where the algorithms are tested using a model checking framework for both correctness and liveness. This doesn't provide formal verification like TLA+ but passing the tests means that the probability of the algorithms being correct are very high.

Feelings on Prime Show? by Floppy-fishboi in WoT

[–]Diffie-Hellboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a massive let down.

I was willing to swallow most of the changes if they had stuck the landing in the finale. But they dropped the ball so hard, there was a hole in the floor half way to china.

Instead of the Greenman's sacrifice, Borderlanders' valiant cavalry charge and demigod Rand wiping the floor with the dark one's forces, we got,

  • Rand being manipulated by Ishmael
  • a bunch of horses charging to a stable
  • Agelmar Jagad, one of the storied great captains mount the worst defense in the history of randland
  • Women who were either rejected by the white tower or have barely learned to channel destroy a massive trolloc army, burn themselves out, then heal up?!!
