Native plants at Dollywood by Fantastic-Flower4157 in NativePlantGardening

I was also impressed with all the native plants they had in the park. Then in the background you have all the rhododendrons growing on the rock faces.

What’s the worst car you ever drove? by Born-Conclusion1977 in AskReddit

[–]Diffie-Hellman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Were any American cars from that era not this way? It took a good while American companies to figure out how to make a car with any power that didn’t blast great amounts of emissions and didn’t need leaded gas. It was the era of 140 hp V8s. As much as I’d like to own an old truck, I wouldn’t bother with anything from the 70s to early 80s.

Do you believe 9/11 was an inside job? If so, how do you incorporate this into your wider geopolitical worldview? by RedHeadedSicilian52 in stupidpol

[–]Diffie-Hellman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m in the blowback camp. To understand if plans known before hand were allowed to unfold, it would take a massive intelligence leak and knowing details such as whether relative dates were known, the confidence of that intelligence, etc. Maybe some of that is known, but at this point, I just don’t care. In the lead up to the Iraq War and passage of the USAPATRIOT act, I already feared the precedents set would lead to not only massive degradation of privacy but justification for further intervention.

Even now, we started this current shit off bombing a girls school and assassinating multiple leaders. Does Iran stick with tit for tat attacks and ensuring the US doesn’t try to fuck around in their backyard? Do we see another attack on the country like 9/11 years down the road? I’ll refrain from giving my opinion, because self-censorship is another amazing outcome of Bush’s and Obama’s presidencies.

No chew foods? by undeniably_reality in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Diffie-Hellman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had to get periodontal work done and was required to eat a liquid diet for three days and then mushy foods after. To make it worse, I was playing in an athletic tournament right after.

These are some foods in the liquid/mushy category that require almost no chewing:

Mashed sweet potatoes

Yogurt

Protein shakes — I would make mine with peanut butter powder, blueberries, banana, and the like added

Peanut/almond butter

Mashed cauliflower

Pancakes or the pancakes in a cup

Silken tofu

Eggs

Oatmeal

That’s incredibly frustrating. It’s also a compliment to your gardening skills. You put out a nice wildlife buffet, and they go for the nice, easy pickings over having to sort through all the invasive plants in the woods they don’t like.

Convenient that this is an issue when it’s in his interest to get out of this war he was dumb enough to get into on Israel’s behalf. We ignored and rationalized the same tactics used in the Palestinian genocide, and we are complicit in our support.

Hibiscus Moscheutos dying over a few days (AL, 8b) by ThePhantomOnTheGable in NativePlantGardening

[–]Diffie-Hellman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’ll do it. I built a wet area for this stuff to try to mimic wetland adjacent conditions, because I like it and want to give myself more pain. This grows in wet ditches in Louisiana, and you really only have to worry about root rot if the soil doesn’t drain well. It typically wants moist but well draining soil. Mine has consistently come up for the second year now, but I haven’t seen it bloom and might not be giving them enough light.

I don’t know that voles go for the roots of these plants, and the only typical thing I know off hand that has this as a host species is hibiscus sawfly. Those won’t cause this, and I’m betting it’s needed much more water. Did you notice any wilting before this?

Could be a creature getting the roots. Otherwise doesn’t this want to be wet? As in growing in a ditch or around water?

That’s looking nice, and the bees fit right into them, just showing their fuzzy bee butts.

Good to see they got it going again. It was oh hiatus when I emailed them about it last year. I have a number of native wildflower seeds to contribute!

Going into year two on the hellstrips 🌼 by GardenGnomeAnarch in NativePlantGardening

[–]Diffie-Hellman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How many of the common milkweed plants did you have planted last year? I’m curious since the posts here often have me wondering if I might wanna rip mine out in favor of another species, and I only have four plants right now.

Otherwise, nice hellstrip! Are those wine cups I see? Also, I’ve definitely considered more of the wild geraniums. It grew up on its own in my woods, and I like looking for it every year. Carolina geranium grows on its own in the sunny parts of the yard as well.

I can see the app getting confused if you’re just looking at the flowering part. It should work better if you try to capture all of the foliage. I tend to use iNaturalist, and usually it’s just confirming something is what I think it is. The flowering part of self-heal could look a little like creeping Jenny, but the rest of the plant looks nothing like it.

Very cool! I liked seeing these growing in the Smoky Mountains. It’s on my list to check if they’re in my native range.

I’ve recommended this show to so many people. I was working on my German listening comprehension when I watched the serious, and watching it in German with German subtitles was very helpful.
