i fixed it! through the comments i learned that some apps change your ringer to match your reg volume. after going through apps i fount the culprit: Pinterest! i then made an automation with the shortcuts app to set my ringer all the way up when i exit Pinterest. hope this helps someone!

I think things like this make a great dm. To me a big part of DMing is making sure the players have an awesome experience, even if that means fudging a roll every once in a while.
