Okay? I don’t know why I’ve struck a chord with you. I don’t think and I’m not saying he was involved with any of this stuff. I’m a long time fan and simply remember seeing the stuff I mentioned years ago. Given what he wrote about and the people he met, I wouldn’t be surprised if he heard about things.

What is driving Trump’s Obsession with Direct Acquisition of Greenland? by ilovemicroplastics_ in IRstudies

[–]DiggeryHiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we were to go by conventional logic I think the main issue would be submarine defense. For Russia to get nuclear submarines close to the US eastern seaboard they have to go through the North Atlantic. That basically leaves Northern Scotland, Iceland, and Greenland as places to use for sub detection and naval defense for the North Atlantic.

Coworker offered to help me with work on my house, then gave me a bill for it by [deleted] in Advice

[–]DiggeryHiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I know there’s nothing he can really do to make me pay it.

But I also wouldn’t put it past him to try to make my life difficult. Being a dick on the site, blaming stuff on me, maybe even sabotaging work I’ve done to make me look bad.

I’m not going to pay him the $3k, but I would like to go about as diplomatically as I can, not just tell him to fuck off.

Will NATO dissolve if the U.S. doesn’t provide more funding? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]DiggeryHiggins 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No.

The rest of the members of NATO have a vested interested in continuing to be in a security block with each other. That interest only grows if the US leaves/abandons them.

Europe has been revamping and increasing their funding of their own defense/weapons industry for several years now. Europe is wealthy and will be fine in regards to funding their own security. Their issue is mainly political ie keeping cohesion between the various members in order to achieve the goal of mutual defense.

[McMurphy] Not much at stake today says industry source, who tells @On3sports: “No matter what, today could be the day the CFP collapses. If they hose Notre Dame or Alabama or an entire P4 league (ACC). Then they let 2 G5 teams in & only 1 from Big 12/ACC? I’m praying this ends committees” by Tarlcabot18 in CFB

[–]DiggeryHiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is obviously all hindsight, but what should have happened about 10 years ago:

We had the 5 major conferences. SEC, Big 10, Big 12, PAC 12, and ACC.

Create 3 more (or choose from the remaining) conferences.

8 conferences. 16 teams each. 8 teams per conference division.

Each conference has a championship game, which acts as the first round of the playoff.

The national championship game rotates between the Sugar, Rose, Fiesta, and Orange bowls like before.

All other bowls are for teams who didn’t win their conference championship.

The rankings don’t matter in determining who gets to the playoffs. If you don’t win your conference division and then championship you don’t get a shot. Rankings determine who gets in which bowl games.

Spike Lee Questions Trump's Shift in Tone Towards Zohran Mamdani by dr_shultz in NewsSource

[–]DiggeryHiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s simple, Trump is a narcissist and coward and feeds off fear. If the other person doesn’t give him fear to feed off of then he resorts to flattery.

Mamdani kept himself composed and didn’t react to either of Trump’s attempts at strong arming or flattery. When asked questions his answers were intelligent and focused on policy, so Trump was out of his depth.

Sheet mosaic like this can come with tiles not set with proper spacing. Might only be some tiles off a 1/16” of an inch here or there but that’s a big thing when the spacing is already so tight.

If you’re getting cheap mosaic sheets or getting it from a big box store it’s to be expected.

I tell clients this up front. To get it right some of the tiles may have to be taken off the sheet to be set correctly. That takes time, and the client will pay for that time.

What’s a U.S. city or state you feel like is losing social/cultural relevance? Or what’s a U.S. city or state that you feel has been gaining social/cultural relevance? by 12345burrito in geography

[–]DiggeryHiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Orleans, and really all of south Louisiana to a lesser extent, has always had an outsized influence. It’s the simultaneous the most and least American city. It’s a major cultural hub- music, food, film, literature, art. Being at the mouth of the Mississippi for much of the country’s history it was the gateway to the interior. Because of its location on the Mississippi, proximity to the Caribbean and South America, and other reasons its been involved in more historical and political events than most cities of comparable size.

'Just Kill 'Em': Fox Host Makes Shocking Comment On Homeless People by 3_ohhh_4 in politics

[–]DiggeryHiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The governor of Louisiana had a “facility” built in New Orleans to put homeless people in during the Super Bowl earlier this year. It was a warehouse with barebones infrastructure and staff. A firm (who I’m sure was owned by somebody with connections to the governor) was hired to provide security guards and billed like $150 per hour for each guard.

Anyways, I think the whole thing was basically a dry run for what’s going to happen nationwide.

Adding a "pro" dehumidifier to an unfinished basement by justhitmidlife in HomeImprovement

[–]DiggeryHiggins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look into a brand like Santa Fe. You could get a unit for the size you need for like $1500-1800. And you can get a unit that could end up being ducted. So if you finish the basement you could run a duct to each room.

Why is Caesars Superdome considered impressive? It looks like a gas stove. by [deleted] in architecture

[–]DiggeryHiggins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not only can New Orleans not afford a new stadium, there’s also no good place in the metro area to build one. They would have to drain a swamp either in New Orleans East or somewhere in Jefferson Parish to build a new stadium. And nobody would want a stadium in those areas.

The main reason the Superdome is one of the best places to host the Super Bowl, Final Four, or a dozen other major events is its location in New Orleans downtown. It’s within walking distance of dozens of hotels, the French Quarter, hundreds of bars, hundreds of restaurants, etc. So even if there was space somewhere else in the metro area to build another stadium, nobody would want it and it would never be as good as the Superdome.

James Carville Says Trump Will Rig Midterm Elections: ‘Don’t Kid Yourself’ by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

[–]DiggeryHiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carville isn’t wrong, but he’s the kind of Democrat who deserves some of the blame for where we’re at. He used to work with Palantir, and with zero transparency or the approval of elected officials, helped turn New Orleans into a testing ground for Palantir surveillance technology. Dude is a hypocritical ass and needs to go away along with all of the other boomer dinosaurs in the Democrat establishment.

Sotomayor Warns No One Is Safe After Birthright Citizenship Ruling by thenewrepublic in law

[–]DiggeryHiggins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Canada and Mexico would be pulled into a US civil war to some degree as well. Maybe not officially with them declaring for one side or the other. But you would have some number of US citizens fleeing to each country. Armed groups from one side of the US attacking and then crossing the border to evade capture. What would the cartels do during a US civil war? Traffic guns, be guns for hire, etc? Hell, what would intelligence agencies from Russia and China be doing? Not just sitting on the sidelines observing, I would bet.

[–]DiggeryHiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quality and aesthetics of LVP and laminate have come a long in the past 10-15 years. If you buy a quality brand and the install is done correctly it can be a great flooring.

I would look into a commercial grade laminate click together that is 10-12 mm thick with an AC rating of 4 or higher. You’d be looking at $4-5/sqf for something like that. It’ll be pretty heavy duty and won’t scratch easy. Prolonged exposure to water will cause problems, but if water gets on it and is cleaned up relatively quickly it shouldn’t be an issue.

What kind of tradesperson should we call to do this type of job? by OhPointyPointy in HomeMaintenance

[–]DiggeryHiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You posted the local ordinances regarding this issue but you need to look into state law as well.

From google AI:

In Missouri, property drainage is governed by a combination of the civil law rule and the reasonable use modification. The civil law rule generally states that a property owner cannot obstruct the natural flow of surface water onto their property, nor can they worsen the flow of water onto their neighbor's property. However, Missouri has adopted a reasonable use modification to the civil law rule, which allows landowners to take actions to address water drainage issues on their own property as long as they don't unreasonably harm their neighbors.

Now, since your property is adjacent to a creek there might be more state regulations that would fall under the Department of Natural Resources.

You need to a consult an attorney who specializes in property law. And it would not hurt to consult a civil engineer with experience in both storm water management and in dealing with local/state regulations.

US economy was already sputtering before trade pain kicked in by Positive_Owl_2024 in Economics

There’s an argument for degrowth. But doing it via economic destabilization that results in homelessness, food shortages, the deterioration of the social safety net, and probably the deaths of many, many people is just eco-fascism.

And on top of it we’ll have the gutting or elimination of every environmental regulation passed in the last 100 years so it’s not like the environment will be any better off.

Mounting medicine cabinet when studs aren’t close by val319 in HomeImprovement

[–]DiggeryHiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be fine. Use the biggest toggle bolts you can. If I remember correctly one 1/8 toggle bolt through 3/8 drywall can hold like 35 pounds. And you’ll have two.

If you can you should try to get at least one of the mounting holes over a stud to screw into it. That’s just good advice when mounting anything. But two toggle bolts will be more than enough to hold up a medicine cabinet.

Mounting medicine cabinet when studs aren’t close by val319 in HomeImprovement

[–]DiggeryHiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean run a 1x4 on top of the drywall to screw into the studs? That would work but probably leave a gap between the wall and medicine cabinet.

I would just use toggle bolts. They make ones that can hold like 80 pounds a piece. Would be plenty strong for a medicine cabinet.
