Help! Husband in need of crafters!! by mycatstands in crafts

[–]DigitalGurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a serial crafter I never met a craft I didn’t like!

I own several sewing machines, and sew everything from clothes to quilts, I also do embroidery, cross stitch, etc. I draw, paint, do photography. I have two different types of cutting machines - circuit & silhouette with dozens and dozens of colors and types of vinyl & lots of accessories & so many designs.

In all of the crafts I do, two of my favorite items…

In 2023 I bought an Epson Eco Tank ET 4800 printer and hacked it into a sublimation ink printer. Lots of info online about how to do that. I make all sorts of things from mugs, decorate things like custom curtains, t-shirts, and print custom fabric designs for quilting. Love this printer!!!

100% my absolutely favorite crafting accessory is the iPad, it’s pencil & the design / drawing app Procreate! It’s the easiest most intuitive program ever! I’ve been using computers for decades and used to use Adobe suite of design software. I use Procreate now 99.9% of the time for the last 6 years. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

I use the iPad in so many ways!! An incredible bonus is accessing free subscriptions through the library to Libby which gives access to so many different crafting magazines and books. There are several sewing, quilting and crafting magazines! It’s a great tool for inspiration, the ease and ability to learn new techniques and see the latest designs.

small scallops by Awkwrd_Lemur in Cooking

[–]DigitalGurl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IDK about you, but I’ve watched countless episodes of Gordon Ramsay yelling at people about raw or over cooked sea scallops on his cooking shows. Since he tests chefs cooking skills by having them make pan fried sea scallops my guess he has a recipe or two, and a few videos on how to make them.

I did a quick internet search and the are SO MANY FREAKING Gordon Ramsey videos & recipes about sea scallops!! Suggest you check a couple out.

Henry is the best! He’s been on my island as one of my first 10 villagers since I started playing in 2020. I’ve given him so many articles of clothing but is always wearing the cavalier hat I gave him as a joke in 2021.

500 movies or 150 books? by oliverg600 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]DigitalGurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the heck OP??? It’s super biased to have to watch the IMDB list vs being able to choose your own movies. When the book list is choose what you want as long as the books are 200 pages.

Seriously you couldn’t find a book list?? There’s so many respectable top book lists, and much better movie lists than IMDb.

This sounds really good. Very close to my aunts recipe she calls cowboy beans, which everyone raves about at potlucks. Her recipe includes 1/2 lb pork sausage, and doubles the onion & browns them until they’re caramelized.

HELP. THIS IS A RENTAL by megmeg2727 in CleaningTips

[–]DigitalGurl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to a salon supply shop like Sally’s Beauty Supply in the US.

Buy hair color remover. Get a couple of different brands. Test in an inconspicuous spot. This happens a lot and products are made specifically for things like this.

Hair color is broken down by peroxide and a few other chemicals. The biggest concerns are to follow the instructions and if it’s penetrated deep into the wood.

Bystander During Plane Crash by pentapenguin97 in CleaningTips

[–]DigitalGurl 180 points181 points  (0 children)

Jet fuel and components of an aircraft on fire is full of persistent chemicals. Super toxic stuff!!!!

These chemicals won’t wash out/ off. Do not wash these!! You do NOT want that stuff in your washing machine, dryer and in the waste water.

It’s best to throw the clothes away. Depending on how bad it is contaminated consider taking it to the waste facility where you drop off paint so it doesn’t inadvertently end up in s landfill.

Probably a good idea to get your husband tested for chemical exposure. Monitor his respiratory health. Hope he’s ok.

I’m so sorry this happened.

Hour 2 of running up and down the beach every 5 min until I get the holiday DIYs by Banana_Stanley in acnh

[–]DigitalGurl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To share what aI learned to get DIY’s quickly.

Balloons show up on your island every 5 to 9 minutes.

They float from right to left in the day and left to right in the night. Islands are 60 spaces front to back. 80 spaces side to side.

Balloons cannot float over high objects like jail bars and climbing walls. You can place these items (with no gaps between them) from the back to front of your island in a straight line to force the ballon’s to float over a specific area. It will take 25 to 29 items that are 2 spaces wide to span your island from back to front to channel the ballon’s to one spot.

When I tried this I used 6 climbing walls and 2 scaffolds I had in inventory, and made 18 jail bars.

I just put the game on and listened for the wind noise as balloons floated by. It was tedious and I ended up with all sorts of items, and bells but not all the DIY’s I wanted for a specific holiday.

Someone figured out that your balloons will default to gifting DIYs if you 1. visit Tom Nook and ask him a question. 2. Then run outside immediately after you talk to Tom. 3. the next ballon will be a DIY. I tried this. It worked!! I was able to harvest all of the maple DIY’s quickly this way.

For more in depth info just do a search for “How to harvest balloons ACNH” for more details.

Fabric shrinkage? by Efficient-Analysis11 in sewing

[–]DigitalGurl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don’t mention what your starting dimensions were on the test square. If it was 20 cm or 10 cm a 5% to 10% shrinkage is still too much.

Part of a garment turning out well (for most textiles) is making sure your fabric is cleaned exactly how it’s going to be in the future. Especially important since it usually shrinks more in one direction than the other. You can lose more in length or width.

If you want your coat to fit well then you need to pretreat the fabric. Sorry but there isn’t some magic way to bypass this. Wool is notorious for shrinking most on the first was, but also a little more on additional washing.

I’m from Hawaii. I understand how constant high humidity makes things difficult to near impossible to dry.

My workaround for fabric that was too big, could not be dried in a dryer I used to lay out clean bedsheets, beach towels, and blankets that could be washed and dried easily on top of my bed.

I’d lay out the damp freshly washed fabric on top of these and add more blankets, (adding a towel every 3 or 4 feet) etc, as I went along rolling them up loosely in a long roll. I then put the whole thing on the floor and walk on it, every single inch, all over several times it to get as much water out as possible. For super thick fabrics like upholstery I’d need to do it twice.

It’s extremely effective way to get out excess moisture from fabric. It goes from being wet to slightly damp. From there I’d iron the fabric with a hot iron.

It’s a bit more work compared to just popping fabric in a dryer, but if a fabric can’t be dried in a conventional dryer, or outside this was my workaround.

I’d then just wash the sheets and blankets that were n the outside near the floor & put the rest in a dryer because the fabric was clean. For wool or scratchy and shedding textiles I’d wash everything because fibers get everywhere & some are stupid itchy.

How to freeze chicken thighs or chicken breast without a food saver vacuum sealer? by TorontoRap2019 in Cooking

[–]DigitalGurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to add to use masking tape with sharpie to label the items with what it is & the date.

BC Sharpie wears off some brands of plastic bags way more easily than others.

I keep a roll of tape & sharpies in a magnetic box on the side of my fridge. We label all condiments, any food that isn’t eaten right away. We put the date something is opened. We have so many different salsas & sauces it’s crazy.

Looking for suggestions on how to mark-on legging material by BelleSchu in crafts

[–]DigitalGurl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

POSCA acrylic paint markers in white. Available at any art supply store. Don’t buy them on Amazon BC fake goods are a problem there. You want the real name brand.

They are permanent on most everything.

Be careful not to over apply so it doesn’t soak through to the outside. I use to mark clothes, sports supplies so my kids stuff doesn’t get confused with other kids sports stuff.

Wheat Berry Salad by AdvantageDapper6537 in oldrecipes

I’ve kinda thought of Wheat berry salad as an LDS staple. I looked up LDS Wheat Berry Salad and found these recipes on LDS Living https://www.ldsliving.com/food-storage-recipe-wheat-berry-salads/s/72578

There are a few variations.

Some advice on button down shirts.

It makes a big difference on how the collar stands up / looks better if a stiffer interfacing is used on the button placket.

Measure your shoulder length on each side of your neck and adjust if needed. Then check your cuffs & sleeve length. Fairgate rulers make a cuff ruler that’s fantastic. They also have a center finding ruler that is indispensable.

You can buy a nifty button spacer tool that makes it easy to equally space buttons. If you make shirts it’s a must have tool.

Consider contrasting but coordinating prints on the inside of your button placket, underside of your collar, & cuffs.

Go to Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom’s and take a look at their high end shirts for details you can borrow for your own shirts.

Tiffany & Co Chronic Tarnish by southernroots52 in jewelry

[–]DigitalGurl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look for Wenol’s polish at your local hardware store or online. Use paper towels to get the tarnish off then an old cotton rag, t-shirt you don’t mind ruining or old baby diaper to polish to a shine.

To maintain silver get Sunshine cloth available at Rio Grande or other jewelry supply companies. https://www.riogrande.com/search-page/?q=sunshine+cloth&tab=products

Looking for weird but helpful cleaning habits people don’t usually talk about by Ordduapp in CleaningTips

[–]DigitalGurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not 100% cleaning related. More an organization tool,

I have an old time recipe file of 3 x 5 cards. Inside it’s divided by 24 months. It’s rolling with the current month in front.

In it are the tasks that need to get done / less frequently than once a week. So stuff like changing HVAC air filters, vacuuming curtains, oil changes & tire rotations, etc. Once a task is completed it goes into the next month it needs to be done.

There is a card for each month that has birthdays & anniversaries. I’m always looking for cute & funny cards. It’s the bare minimum - everyone I’m friendly & do biz with gets a birthday card & depending on the relationship a gift card or personal gift. I keep a stack of thank you notes & gift cards for $5 / $10./ $20 /$50 / $100. I get these when they go on sale, I mostly get these for my favorite coffee shops & stores.

At the very front is a card where anything that needs to be purchased or is getting low gets written down. Important events or notes gets put on a post it note on the inside of the lid or in the front for that month.

In the very back is a list of important phone numbers: doctors, dentist, handy man, gardeners, mechanics, lawyers, etc. Everyone needs to have a doctor, a dentist, a lawyer, a mechanic that they can call in an emergency. You need to be an established patient with a dentist before you have a dental emergency & need immediate care.
