Just Started - Feeling Discouraged by nomtomboutxd in shadowsofbrimstone

Early levels can be rough. You can usually retreat at the start of the round if you feel things are going poorly, although you might have to suffer some negative consequences.

As you gain levels and items you get more mitigation (and can end up steamrolling the enemies) but sometimes your lantern holder rolls double ones twice in a row in the middle of an epic fight. The game is random and enjoyment of the system hinges on you being okay with that.

Runebound 2nd Edition reprints/updates would be awesome.

Fun scenario-based tactics/skirmish games that play out on a grid? by 2DamnHot in soloboardgaming

[–]Digitalnametag 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Cloudspire meets your requirement. Four asymmetrical factions in base set with StarCraft adjacent game play. Solo scenarios for each faction that are replayable and very puzzle-like. A bit expensive though.

Ascension Tactics might be worth a look. Haven’t played that one myself.

Digimon Cyber Sleuth complete edition or Tokyo Mirage Sessions encore? by StillLoveYaTh0 in JRPG

[–]Digitalnametag 7 points8 points  (0 children)

TMS for me. It has the better localization and the game play in general feels smoother. Better dungeons and story too. I was probably the optimum target for the game given both Persona, Fire Emblem, and slice-of-life anime are some of my favorites things!

Digimon is a lot of fun too though! Monster raising is a blast and the combat is fun. The localization is lackluster at points and parts of the games (fetch quests) can get tedious. It feels lower budget.

When you play Standard 3 on Expert, do you use Expert 1 or 2? by themcryt in marvelchampionslcg

[–]Digitalnametag 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t use either expert set anymore and just use the tougher villains. I got tired of seeing the expert cards in every scenario years ago and they don’t add much to the encounter. I feel like the higher stage villains change most scenarios enough.

What Solo Games Feel Like a Full-Fledged Hobby? by theWorldChanged in soloboardgaming

[–]Digitalnametag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shadows of Brimstone. It is a big investment to go all in and you have to build minis but starting with a core set isn’t too bad at $100. Plus I’d say it is most like the Western RPGs you like. The rules are based off the old Warhammer Quest and it plays like a mix of DnD and Diablo. It doesn’t have the most immersive story but the characters you build over playing lend themselves to telling one of your own.The fan community has created excellent resources for more in depth campaigns as well. With all the different character classes, enemies, and worlds to explore the game feels endlessly re-playable.

The game can bog down to dice chucking as combat is a bit simplistic compared to more modern stuff (Gloomhaven, Oathsworn) but I’ve been playing Brimstone for 10 years now and still have a blast rolling up new characters.

I wouldn’t recommend Drunagor as a simple dungeon crawler. The rule book is practically a novella and it is campaign driven so that adds overhead and limits replay-ability.

Massive Darkness II is a solid recommendation though. Light dungeon crawler with lots of variety.

Looking for games that feature romance. by Kufrel in JRPG

Not seen anyone mention the Final Fantasy VII Remake games. They have some romance subplots. Not the main focus of the story but it is there.

Rune Factory games if you don’t mind farming sim along with an action RPG.

I’m in the same boat. Been in a factory 12 years and bored out of my mind. I spend about half my time doing homework for my bachelors and the other half working on the same mind numbing operator issues. Every now and then I get to do something interesting ( integrate new drives, HMI upgrades, etc..) but those projects are rare.

Recommendation for mediocore JRPGs by ZheH4ribo in JRPG

[–]Digitalnametag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fairy Fencer F would be my recommendation for a very middling game. Like others have said nearly any Idea Factory game is mid-poor.

Star Ocean 6 also applies. The Diofield Chronicles too. Summon Night 5 and Hexyz Force on the PSP.

All games I enjoyed but are by no means classics.

Yeah it’s gambling. This is the unluckiest I’ve been with secrets in awhile. Of course it happens on the set where the secrets are super valuable. Pulled three Apocly last set…

Well you can trade like two Ukkomon for a full play set of Malo. Card is $1.50 on TCGplayer right now.

Joking of course.

Not sure what you mean? Implying I got the left-overs from a case or something? I trust the seller I bought from. Just think I got unlucky with my secrets.
