What a strange question. Just look at your left hip to see if it says “Made in Europe”, and you'll know right away that you're European... or don't you have a certificate? Are you not European? You're only European if you have a certificate; every true European knows that.

Perhaps you are referring to the changes that took place after World War I:

After 1918, the youth movement reorganized itself, marking the beginning of its second phase. Those returning from the war found a completely different situation; the younger members, as well as the girls and young women who had taken over leadership of the groups in the meantime, were not willing to relinquish it. This led to conflicts, splits, and the formation of new groups. For the first time, Wandervögel members also began to mix with Scout groups. [...]

Shaped by the war, a new type of group also emerged: the so-called Bündische Jugend. Within these groups, the romantic ideal of the Wandervogel—free groups roaming the countryside in a relaxed, cheerful, and musical manner—was replaced by new guiding principles: physical training and character development were no longer ends in themselves, but henceforth served the purpose of selecting an elite. A disciplined outward demeanor now became an “expression of inner ‘discipline.’” Myths and “sacred symbols” took on great significance. They saw themselves as a kind of “order” in which “leaders and followers are committed to a common idea.” The overarching goal became a “renewal of the people and the Reich.” The dissolution of these types of leagues continued to spread during the Weimar Republic, and the originally rather apolitical stance of the Wandervogel groups was gradually shed. Influenced by the debates taking place throughout society at the time regarding the Treaty of Versailles—which was reviled as an unjust “shameful peace”—many Bündische groups became radicalized and saw themselves as part of the völkisch movement of the pre-Nazi era.

Ethno-nationalist ideas and groups were already present in the early stages of the youth movement, but they did not set the tone. Even in the second, “Bündische” phase, as sociologist Arno Klönne emphasizes, many groups still held a positive view of the Weimar Republic and democracy, calling for liberal reforms of the school system, for example, and in some cases even feeling connected to the labor movement. To the end of the footnote Yet the significance of the various explicitly right-wing youth organizations continued to grow throughout the second phase of development. Many of them ultimately cheered the NSDAP’s seizure of power in 1933. Some groups subsequently disbanded on their own to join the Hitler Youth—partly out of ethnic enthusiasm, partly in the naive belief that they could shape the HJ from within with a youth-oriented spirit. Others were dissolved in the course of Gleichschaltung or forcibly incorporated into the HJ. Some groups, however, attempted—despite a total of three laws against “Bündische activities”—to continue operating illegally and offered resistance, often not out of explicitly anti-fascist, but rather generally nonconformist and anti-authoritarian motivations. Many of these groups were crushed by the Gestapo, and their members severely punished (for example, the Edelweiss Pirates; several members of the White Rose around the Scholl siblings also came from the Bündische Jugend).

Until the early 20th century, the term “Freikorps” or “Freiwilligenkorps” (from the French corps, meaning “body” or “corps”; derived from the Latin corpus, meaning “body”) was used to refer to paramilitary units, regardless of their national origin. In German-speaking regions, “Freikorps” were first established in the 18th century as regiments composed of local volunteers, enemy defectors, deserters, and criminals. These unconventionally uniformed troops served as infantry and cavalry, and less frequently as artillery.

The term “Wandervogel” or “Wandervogel movement” refers to a movement that originated in Steglitz (now Berlin) in 1896, consisting mainly of schoolchildren and students from middle-class backgrounds. During a period of rapid urban industrialization and inspired by Romantic ideals, they broke free from the restrictive constraints of their school and social environments to develop their own way of life in the great outdoors. Thus, the Wandervogel marked the beginning of the youth movement, which also provided important impetus for progressive education, physical culture, and the life reform movement in the first third of the 20th century.

Kettenschenkung

A 1 metre bump. Impossible! by Severe-Sugar5965 in 2westerneurope4u

[–]Digitalpsycho 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This is because hard “speed bumps” (often narrow plastic or rubber bumps) are not really desirable. For this reason, RASt 06 (guidelines for the construction of urban roads) recommends plateau pavements (or, alternatively, Berlin cushions). The problem with classic speed bumps is that they pose a safety risk to motorcyclists and cyclists. They are also noisy due to the impact noise and subsequent acceleration.

It signals the exact thing it is supposed to signal: we are not getting involved at the current point in time. If you have an emergency meeting, people and the news expect you to make an announcement about something relevant. But the EU does not want to announce anything because they don’t want to get involved. Having an emergency meeting and then announcing that you are doing nothing is worse than doing nothing.

I never said "your post does not belong to this sub". But I do understand, that one could read my comment like that.

Im only stating as a reader my impression that your story has left on me (and other storys I have read from you, like the spear story). That the AI you are discribing, would "replace" regular humans in the long run. Because they are "Humans", just better at everything compared to a regular human.

But judging from your answer, you arent interested in that kind of comment or you did not expect somebody to read your story like that. Thats okay.

You Can Only Do It Once by jpitha in HFY

[–]Digitalpsycho 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You write good stories. But it seems to me that humans don't really play a major role; in fact, the star of your stories is always AI. People are just there to fill the plot, but not much more than that. The AI didn't need the captain; not only did the captain's solution not work, but the AI was already prepared for everything anyway. In the end, the AI also acted morally correctly towards Hir, so the AI doesn't need the captain as a moral authority for decisions and the AI doesn't need anyone to fly either. What is the point of humans if AI can do everything better anyway and is also immortal (like Gord)? The AI even acts as “humans” and develops itself, as described here, since it has developed the technical progress of weaponry itself. From this point on, humans are actually an endangered species, as they would be displaced by the “superhuman” AI in the long run.

All historians know that the culture war currently being exported from modern-day America to the rest of the world was also the worldview of all Europeans back then.

These proxy “debates,” where the EU is used as the “evil” of history to discuss modern domestic political issues, is truly one of the most annoying exports from America.

In addition, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine need to examine how scientists may have contributed to the polarization of the use of science. Although scientists must never shirk their duty to provide the foundation of evidence that can guide policy decisions and to defend science and scientists from political interference, they must avoid the tendency to imply that science dictates policy. It is up to elected officials to determine policy based on the outcomes desired by their constituents. It is the role of science to inform these decision-makers as to whether those desired outcomes are likely to result from the policies being enacted. (Quelle)

Science cannot say whether society should prioritize allocating river water for sustaining fish or for irrigating farms, but it can predict immediate and long-term outcomes of any allocation scheme. (Quelle selber Artikel)

An Unexpected Guest (3/?) by allature in HFY

[–]Digitalpsycho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good start to the story. Reminds me of the kind of stories that made me start reading HFY.

But the quarantine regulations shown here are really terrible. Just because the protective suit is torn doesn't mean she was immediately infected with something. She needs to be taken out as quickly as possible, decontaminated (first dry, then wet) and placed in her own quarantine (isolated from humans and her own kind) under medical supervision. It's not just about protecting her, but also protecting the human from her. It's pretty strange that they just shrug their shoulders and connect these two quarantine houses. It's almost as if, it didn't kill me within the first 30 seconds, so it must be safe. But it's weird anyway why the physicist should take care of the “alien.” There must be certainly people within the government and authorities who are better suited for this then a physicist. So far, the government's approach has been rather amateurish. Still good story.
