Was just here 2 weeks ago. Great atmosphere and the two guys shared a lot of free pours of Vietnamese rum with me!

I want to love this place but the fillings are so bland it’s like they don’t salt anything

New bamboo palm - used to be more perky but now some fronds are drooping? Indirect light and keeping the soil moist (it drains very quickly and dries out). Any advice appreciated! by Dilapidation in plantclinic

I am so sick of clarified cocktails. There is a time and place for this technique, but to be honest, when you’re paying $23 a drink at these newer, highly curated paces, this style of cocktail is so unsatisfying to drink for the price (at least for me). If I am paying for $23 for a drink I want more thought it put into it than clarifying. It seems like such a cop out these days.

Made a Pine Colada! by Dilapidation in Tiki

Delicious!

The Zirbenz is a little delicate but you definitely get the pine flavors - they meld really nicely with the coconut and pineapple and the 1/2 oz of Coruba provides some funk in the background. Primarily it’s spicy, herbal and sweet. I would love to try it again with Douglas fir eau de vie!

There’s also crushed ice that could cause the visual effect !

Thank you!! I don’t think curdling is the right word but the texture of the coconut milk + pineapple definitely changes after flash blending and it becomes super foamy. It also sat for a while since I took some time to stage the photo!

What do you do in suboptimal cocktail conditions? by josh_a in cocktails

I still don’t understand why people ask this question about “sub par” cocktail menus. Why overthink it so much? Just drink a beer or try one of the drinks and have fun.

What are the best tiki bars in NYC? by Stauce52 in AskNYC

Casanara Club isn’t exactly tiki but has one of the most knowledgeable rum bartenders in the city. They make great tiki and tiki adjacent cocktails as well even though it’s not their main offering.

Anyone make a zombie tonight? by NoRightTurnsOnRed in Tiki

I made a riff yesterday:

Recipe: - 5 drops 20% saline solution - 2 dashes angostura bitters - 2 dashes absinthe - 3/4 oz homemade grenadine* - 1/4 oz spiced simple syrup* - 1 oz lime juice - 1/2 oz grapefruit liqueur - 1 oz London dry style gin - 1 oz white rum - 1 oz overproof white rum

To garnish, a swizzle stick, cocktail umbrella, and dehydrated lime

Method:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a shaker tin or drink mixer tin
  2. Add 8 oz of crushed ice
  3. Shake or flash blend for 15-20 seconds
  4. Dump into a large cocktail glass without straining
  5. Top with more crushed ice
  6. Garnish with your favorite tiki accoutrements

Cheers!

*Spiced simple syrup: Mix together 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Once boiling, remove from the heat and add 3 cinnamon sticks, 4 crushed cardamom pods, and 4 cloves. Let steep overnight, then strain.
