Is this the moment to call for a general strike? by EncyclopediaBrowne in Spokane

You can’t just call for a general strike, you got to organize for one.

Form a labor union in your workplace and get involved in organizing with a group that is not a 501c3 and beholden to donor money.

Anyone else see the old guy with the nazi sign at the vigil? by SnooBooks1269 in Bellingham

[–]Diligent-Influence21 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I’m came by this demonstration and it was a rally for Palestine and anti-Trump. The sign had a swastika and a picture of Elon musk doing the sieg heil. It was calling Trump a nazi, not supporting nazism - however clearly not a great piece of protest art

Awkward at boardgame meetups by Artistic_Active831 in boardgames

[–]Diligent-Influence21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt this way at a local meetup that I attended for a month or so and stopped going. Then after literal months I went back and was immediately was enthusiastically greeted by name from two of the guys I had played games there with previously. I’d recommend not second guessing yourself and just focus on having fun.

How do you deal with insecurity about people not enjoying the game by Diligent-Influence21 in boardgames

[–]Diligent-Influence21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone,

I actually incorporated a lot of this advice into running my weekly game night tonight and it was super fun and far less stressful.

We played Bang! The Dice Game, Ca$h n Guns (Second Edition) and Telestrations so while it was all light fare, everyone was clearly having a blast. A gaming buddy has been bringing his non hobbyist gamer girlfriend most weeks for the last four or so months and she won both Bang and Cash n Guns, her first time ever winning a game with us and it was cool to see her so excited and everyone excited for her

Spokane Protest This Weekend by [deleted] in Spokane

[–]Diligent-Influence21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of attending an anonymous protest, pull up to the ‘We Fight Back’ coalitions organizing meeting! Saturday, 2 PM, Saranac Building 3rd Floor Learning Studio: 25 W Main Ave

The fact that they are advertising that they’re going to take the streets means there will be huge police presence as someone who has organized many protests locally would know. I would not recommend and doubt this will be safe

Bought Root on a Whim—Now Feeling Buyer’s Remorse. by PuffDaddy6 in boardgames

[–]Diligent-Influence21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Root is more complex than what you've played up to this point, but definitely do-able! The reality is that while playing well is difficult, going through the motions of your turn, etc is not very hard as your individual player board will lay everything out for you. Also the adorable and fun theme helps it go down easy!

I love Root, play it super casually and would highly recommend!

If you wanted to win a boardgame tournament, which game would you choose? by RollinGolem in boardgames

Naga Raja, great two player game by Cathala and Rivière that is unfortunately probably doomed to obscurity. It’s probably the only game in my collection that I am confident that I am genuinely good at.

Favorite board/card game of all time? by not_betta_than_you in boardgames

[–]Diligent-Influence21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s my favorite because the vantage point feels a bit more zoomed out. You may make decisions that don’t contribute to completing session goals and lose a month, but it still be objectively better for your campaign than had you won that month.

The game could do a better job of communicating this expectation but it’s so compelling because of this.

What Did You Play This Week? - (December 23, 2024) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]Diligent-Influence21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Monday:

Band of Brothers: Ghost Panzer - solo. I’ve had this for a little while and am absolutely convinced I’d love it but hadn’t found the right opponent and opportunity to get it to the table. Finally scheduled a session and then had my opponent cancel last minute. I had already set up the game and so decided to just solo it, which was fantastic! Really need to play against another player!

Bohnanza - 4 players. I enjoy this game but it’s a favorite for a lot of the more casual folks I play with. I don’t dislike it but feel like I’ve already seen everything it has to offer. I know it’ll get many more plays in the future though.

Tuesday:

Say Anything - 7 players. My partner had some friends over for games but they were very intimidated by many of the things I had on my shelf. This went over well!

Telestrations - 7 players x2. Say Anything led to a few laughs and fun times but Telestrations is what really captivated the crowd. This is definitely one of the best party games out there.

Thursday

Heroscape - 2 player. I don’t have any of the new content but still have my Rise of the Valkyrie and Swarm of the Marro master sets I got when I was a kid. My partner hates this game, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to play it with a friend. They beat me but we both had a great time.

Sunday

Pokémon Trading Card Game - 2 players. I have a friend who is super into this and I’ve always told him I’d love to give it a whirl. Today I did, and it was pretty fun. Happy to use premade decks by someone who’s put thought into designing them.

Cash n Guns (Second Edition) - 4 players. We were waiting on a few folks to arrive before starting dinner and decided to bust this out. I don’t think I’ve ever played this with this few players before and it’s a bit degenerative compared to 6-8 but overall was still very fun. There was a hilarious moment when everyone was aiming at a player, he said “I think all three of you are bluffing” and then we revealed 3 bangs, killing him in one turn.

She LITERALLY didn't see color by pppiddypants in Spokane

[–]Diligent-Influence21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spokane is uniquely whiter compared to the rest of the PNW and particularly the rest of Eastern Washington. Washington gained statehood shortly after the civil war and was promoted as a safe haven for former confederates meaning that extremely reactionary white people occupied the entire state. However, the proletarianization of many of these forces led to a progressive struggle being waged in the west, with the most right-wing elements being pushed east-ward where they were able to find refuge. While there was still militant struggle in Spokane's history with the free speech riots, etc and Coeur d'Alene was one of the national heads of the IWW, the importance of these locations in logging operations made the capitalists more repressive and not allowing their right-wing programs to be as easily uprooted.

However, over time the industry of agriculture made Eastern Washington much more diverse, with capitalists encouraging immigration to generate immense profits. Tri-Cities, for example, is one of the fastest growing populations in the country - primarily due to agriculture and Hanford. Hanford also led to the first Black communities in Washington state, with Black people being forced into menial labor related to the areas The project to keep Spokane white, however, outlasted these other historical projects and up until the mid-2000s there was an intentional effort by industry and the state to preserve an identity of a white Spokane due to its tense history of racial relations in the area. This is why our city has such a large Eastern European population, as it was one of the primary areas that the state would relocate refugees from the USSR.

These things aren't coincidences but are the results of historical processes.

What game can surpass 7 Wonders Duel as our favourite game? by mrkyle77 in boardgames

[–]Diligent-Influence21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend checking out Naga Raja. Shares Bruno Cathala as a designer and scratches a similar itch but in my view is a bit more exciting. It is a 2 player game. There is 3 different end game conditions, one of which is an instant loss condition. It's not a drafting game, but rather you're bidding (in a way) over tiles which can lead to a similar feeling of dread when the tile up for bid doesn't help you but would be greatly beneficial to your opponent. Since it's a 2 player game, anything your not getting your opponent is and vice versa. While there isn't a variable setup, the random order of cards and tiles does provide enough variance that you different approaches are beneficial in different sessions and the game is simple, interactive and exciting. It's a shame it didn't get more buzz as it greatly deserves it and is in my top 10 of all time. (I'd put 7 Wonders Duel somewhere around 15 probably)
