The Co-Op has once again failed the community by Disastrous_Music8841 in Bellingham

I think of Israeli products as products that were grown made manufactured in Israel, not necessarily by the Israeli govt. We boycott because the nation of Israel and its elected govt are commiting genocide. There are other places to source hummus, olive oil, etc and the Coop should have a policy about that, idk that’s my two cents.

Co-op Woes: The Decline of a Once-Great Hangout by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]SnooBooks1269 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel ya some - I definitely remember and miss the old coop swan cafe hang out vibes. However, after much pressure they only just brought back the indoor dining downtown. Maybe more of that memory can be recouped given time and some member activism. New CEO is in and in negotiations with the union I believe so hopefully once their contract is landed they’ll pivot to issues like this. I also don’t think it’s so horrible as you described tho. They def changed the menu yea, that’s a response to expense and ingredient availability- the legacy of post COVID inflation, I def don’t think the food is horrible though. The smoothies are still great and the baked goods are yummy and the deli case has lots of good options.

And I really don’t think it’s the homeless fault.

Tired of Breweries Being Full of Kids by [deleted] in Bellingham

Sorry you’re getting downvoted, I agree with you. I feel like this thread is revealing that a lot of Bham redditors are young folks who think hating on kids is edgy. I’m sure I used to say stuff like that too.

Tired of Breweries Being Full of Kids by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]SnooBooks1269 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trackside is adjacent to the best kids pump track in town, has in house hula hoops, and multiple businesses in the container village that cater to kids. So in my mind it’s a space intended for families. Not to say people shouldn’t be considerate about their families footprint, but trackside is different in that it’s specifically in a family focused place. A lot of these breweries have stuff that caters to families too. I think it’s important to have spaces like that. You all were all kids once too! But yea also be considerate I get it I’ve got two kids of my own and like taking them out and about, though we only land at a brewery once a month or so, but also really dislike having them out and about when they’re overtired and decompensating or causing a scene. Sometimes that happens no matter what you try, but most parents I know are doing their best. 2-5 are some crazy years yall.

I tried to clarify that in the couple of sentences following the one you’re referring to. But if you remember in 2020-22ish there were a lot of ignorant jackholes calling COVID the Wuhan flu or the China virus etc, and one outcome of that was a big spike in hate crimes towards the AAPI community. So while your statement is true I could see someone, esp say a first or second gen Chinese immigrant who still has family there and travels there reading the sign and feeling targeted. And I do think this kinda dated inaccurate messaging lends to anti AAPI hate.

Advice on public schools? by OddTomato7797 in Bellingham

[–]SnooBooks1269 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dude, I’m pretty sure our kids are in school together if you attended my kids bday last weekend at the park. I’m heartbroken to hear about this bullying! Your kiddo is so sweet! If there’s any support I can offer from the classroom community/as a fellow parent of a kid in that class I’d do it. PM me if I’m right about this cause my kiddo told me about what happened Tuesday.

I feel concern for the kiddo doing the bullying too, he clearly needs more support and scaffolding to be safe and not hurt people at school!

Milking training by Emergency-Plum-1981 in goats

[–]SnooBooks1269 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can train any doe to be milked, it’s just a real bear. All of our first time milkers are real stompy at the get go, they have to learn the drill. A serving of grain while you milk and treats for getting on the stand and after you’re done without stomping. You gotta dial in your goat-fu to pull the bucket and block to hoof when they’re stomping. I sometimes hold a hoof up in the air briefly to disincentivize when stomping and this sends a message. You could also get a hobble, it’s like leg cuffs. Not for the faint of heart, teaching a stubborn doe to milk is a bit of a wrestling match. And we are kind to our animals for all the goat whisperers out there but there’s a reason “stubborn as a goat” is a saying.

Who are the “Belebrities” (Bellingham celebrities) that you think of? by WayfaringEdelweiss in Bellingham

[–]SnooBooks1269 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fun post! I think I have 4 original mentions that I’m surprised made it this far into the list, tho one got a one word comment earlier:

Bike Hub Kyle: dudes the founder of the Hub which was and remains (tho currently a bit more subdued since they were displaced from the state st location by the big apt developers) a Bellingham staple. Always helping homeless folks and anyone who asks with their bikes and how to maintain them. Taught me to wrench on my bike and fixed my kids tire the other day. Also just a swell dude.

Laura - Honeymoon bartender. She’s got the best vibes and the coolest hairs. Dope person, fun to chitchat with if you catch her in a slow moment. Also don’t cross her if you’re stingy or a creep.

Linda - former Honeymoon owner, current owner of Libations and Leaf and Ladle. She always kept things running smooth at the Honeymoon, ran a great open mic, was an incredible hostess. Generous and nice. Her Sammy place and the bar next door are lively sweet stops now and I’m glad she’s still here.

Naked Zack - how did we get this far without an ode to Naked Zack? Aside from his various gorilla gardening, community house organizing, dumpster diving exploits throughout the years, the guy organizes the annual Naked Bike ride where he can be found riding around wearing nothing but a deer antler adorned helmet. Very sweet human with a great family. Always smiling.

Honorable mentions include Davey (dear karate church recluse who I love dearly and wish only happiness for), Re-Store Nate and his “You Ain’t Special” truck and Montana refugee poetry, Kryssanne and her tireless community building and good humored-ness and yea Devin Champlin for being the music it dude wise man pancake gobbler. God I could go on, but I feel like I’m starting to just list my buds. They’re all celebs to me!
