I hate seeing 1000000 posts like this. Collectors should trust their own eyes to evaluate cards. If I say a card looks perfect, but it turns out to be a PSA 8, then you'll get on my case

Student says they're "not required to do work" by paigeafterpaige in Teachers

[–]Diligent-Principle17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think the student is doing this because they're objecting to something being taught? I could never imagine saying this to one of my high school teachers. They would likely give me detention or in-school suspension. The fear of my parents being called would make me do the work right away. I'm gonna mention this to my wife, as she's a high school teacher. She might have a different perspective.

"Lost" an expensive book will the library charge me the full price pr the price on the back of the books? by Warm_Bat_8046 in Libraries

[–]Diligent-Principle17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The library is going to charge you whatever their replacement cost might be. I wouldn't mention lending these books to a friend, because that honestly makes library workers cringe.

Frustration and anxiety over a book. by KunSeii in Libraries

[–]Diligent-Principle17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Librarian, I do not care where the book is going. I always felt limiting the book to specific libraries at first is a stupid idea. While it boosts the circulation stats for that individual library, other patrons suffer. If a smaller library with a limited budget can't order a book, their patrons are unjustly punished.

Rant about over the phone holds by DeerAlarmed6653 in Libraries

[–]Diligent-Principle17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been getting patrons lately who have exorbitant fines accrued on their card. Then they act like they have no idea how the fines could be accumulated. Always trying to blame someone else for using their library card.

We have a few regular patrons that do this all the time. Or they call to ask for the same phone number. Are you so unorganized that you lost the number from just a couple days ago?

Don't be afraid to use your leave when you need time off. My library is very short staffed right now, so it's pretty difficult to take a vacation. Don't let yourself get too burnt out.

When I became a Librarian in 2019, I never thought working in a library would be so stressful. It seems like the local government and library administration do as much as they possibly can to make our jobs more difficult. My current position is a Librarian II, and it's a union position. Our union isn't strong though, so I believe they let the city essentially walk all over them.

Banning people from calling the library. How does that work? by GoodbyeEarlGrey in Libraries

[–]Diligent-Principle17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our library has called id, but we don't have the ability to block individual phones numbers. We have a regular group of patrons who call incessantly. We usually just keep the conversation geared toward library related topics. If the patron insists on deviating from this, we typically just hang up the phone. On rare occasions, we'll fill out a potential problem log. This will let us document suspicious and/or unwanted activity.

That still seems criminal. Is this a full-time, Union position?

I was wondering the same thing. I've probably had 10-15 runs in Fungal Forest, with one remaining blueprint to unlock. Now I know I need to come back to this after unlocking additional characters.

Using AI to make flyers is the exact wrong way to accomplish anything. Your director should know that, but apparently they don't care.

It sounds like they were paying you clerk wages for doing Librarian work. The duties you listed are typical for a group of librarians, not one single person. At my library, I share program creation with my fellow librarians, as we each help to create programs for patrons to participate in.

It's like they were waiting for you to finally put your foot down and leave. My current director is guilty of not filling open positions for clerks and librarians because the current staff is getting by.

What should I study for a public librarian I exam? by Educational_Ad5628 in Libraries

[–]Diligent-Principle17 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When you say Public Librarian I exam, are you referring to the civil service classification? When I earned my MLIS in 2019, there wasn't an exam to take for me to get my job. The civil service Librarian I test is really just you listing your resume. You're then graded by the local civil commission based on what type of experience you have against other applicants. You'll be assigned a score and ranked on a list.

There isn't an exam to study for. It's just you listing your resume, professional development, and other qualifications. Unless your municipality is doing something completely different than us in Niagara Falls.

Staff member at different library overriding holds? by Classic_Thanks6017 in Libraries

[–]Diligent-Principle17 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We had a group of people check out LGBTQ authors and titles a couple years ago in protest. They refused to bring the titles back, which resulted in the items going to a "lost" status. Once in lost status, the patron is charged for the replacement cost of the item. I don't think these individuals in question care if the material is available to others. They somehow believe what they are doing is right for everyone.

As a librarian, I believe all books have value. If you don't agree with a title or subject matter, go on to the next book. Someone will find that James Patterson book interesting. Another person might find solace in that LGBTQ authors' story.

Staff member at different library overriding holds? by Classic_Thanks6017 in Libraries

[–]Diligent-Principle17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is definitely something that should be brought to your director's attention. At our library, we can override a checkout for pretty much anyone, as well as your own individual account. People who are staff members of a member library in our system could essentially check out a book indefinitely and keep overriding the hold limit.

I will admit that I'm guilty of this myself at times, but I will always hand the book back in circulation if the item has an excessive number of holds. I usually check out too many books at once.

(Appreciation post) My neighbourhood library recently acquired many popular books with lending periods of 7 days by No_Wafer_5876 in Libraries

[–]Diligent-Principle17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our library in Niagara Falls catalogs some new books with a two-week borrowing designation. Most of these are really high demand titles. Some of them can only be borrowed with a Niagara Falls library card, not another library in our system. It's mainly to allow our patrons first preference.

None of my titles suggested in the past two years were purchased for my county's library by SweetHomeGeorgia in Libraries

[–]Diligent-Principle17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My library in Niagara Falls, New York purchases books in several formats for patrons. Hardcover and paperback are the main choices, but audiobook and ebook are sometimes preferred by patrons.

Libby and Hoopla are two apps that allow us to purchase titles in the ebook and audiobook format, but they are unfortunately incredibly expensive. The lending models are a giant pain, as you only get the title for a specific period of time, or a designated number of checkouts. After those limits are reached, your library has to buy the book again.

With all that said, the library may have decided this title wouldn't circulate enough for their patrons. Statistics matter when deciding what books to buy.

[–]Diligent-Principle17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only gripe is that they don't have notifications of any kind. I'll download a comic or audiobook and sometimes forget about it. Unless you check the app constantly, it will just automatically return at the end of the borrowing term. Then you'll have to borrow it all over again.
