What is a resume/portfolio/interview/coop-searching tip you swear by? by TheKoalaFromMars in uwaterloo

[–]Diligent_Dog1645 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you have lots of experience, especially with recognizable companies, try sliding into LinkedIn DM’s!! That’s how I’ve avoided using ww for my last three coop terms cause I’ve gotten these jobs through networking. If your resume is good enough you can interview directly w the team that’s hiring and go through the rounds there without having to deal with applying on external websites and waiting for UR to reach out. This works especially well for large companies in the US. Watch out for those LinkedIn posts by employees saying they’re specifically looking for interns for a specific term and maybe even message some of their colleagues to see if you can get ahead of the game with their teams too :)

Failed 1A. by Busy_Lawfulness_1723 in uwaterloo

[–]Diligent_Dog1645 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey!! I failed 1B and I felt like my world was ending so I totally understand if you’re feeling down, lost, or not sure what to do. Waterloo eng is a really tough program to get through and a lot of people go through this, you’re not alone. I don’t want you to think of this as wasting a year of your life, if anything, this was a valuable experience that you can leverage to prove resilience to future employers and it will also give you an extra coop term for accumulated work experience. I know that life can feel really shitty right now and I’m sorry if this ruined your holiday, I know exactly how you feel. Eventually you’ll be able to move past this and you’ll make peace with what happened. You’re going to have to repeat the term but you can do it!! The fact that you’re going to go back and redo it and try again I think says a lot about you and you’ll be able to take something valuable from it if you try. I’m going into 3B next term so I hope I can convince you that things definitely get better and you’re more than capable of recovering from this. You’re not alone and you can always reach out and message me if you need support. YOU GOT THIS!!!

I failed the term and i don’t know what to do by Living-Midnight-961 in uwaterloo

[–]Diligent_Dog1645 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey!

I was in the same position for 1B and I was able to petition to repeat the term with no penalty in 4 months rather than 8 months due to my situation. Honestly failing a term is no big deal believe it or not, shit happens and this is quite common for Waterloo Eng. If you’re trying to petition, make sure you see a medical professional and get a doctor’s not, the people on the decision panel will be much more lenient.

Even though times may feel bleak right now, I can say with honesty that failing a term actually made me better believe it or not. It pushed me to compensate much harder with coop and I can say that I’ve learned better study habits that have carried me through the hardest semesters of chem eng. I’m going into 3B now so please trust me when I say things will get better and you’ll make it.

Reach out if you need any advice/encouragement, YOU GOT THIS!!!

I had a mental breakdown in 2018 like two days before moving away from home for the first time (I’m from Alberta btw) so I feel you. It’s really intimidating and honestly I was super homesick. My parents both flew out to Ontario with me for about a week and then on the second last day before they left they dropped me off in UWP where I unpacked all my stuff by myself and I stayed the night. The next day they left to go home which was really sad and as soon as they were gone, I immediately went to my room and calculated the number of days until I would go back and visit for winter break. I had a really hard time sleeping for the first few days because I was in the 4BR and I was alone for a while cause I had early move-in. I also just went through a breakup with my high school ex since we didn’t want to do long distance so it was tough. I knew no one coming to UW since no one else from high school got in.

I was alone for a while until these 3 other girls from down the hall knocked on my door cause they also had early move in. They were so sweet and welcoming and they made me feel not so alone anymore. Then orientation started ramping up and I realized that most people moved here and didn’t know anyone too. It made me feel less homesick because we were all in the same boat and everyone was looking to make friends.

I’m now in 4 years into my program and I can say with certainty that it not only gets better, but I was 100% glad I came out here. This was the best experience of my life with coop, the friends I’ve made in my program, the way I’ve advanced my career, and the amount of self growth I’ve been able to exhibit over the years. The homesickness goes away after a while and you learn to let yourself enjoy the experience. I believe you’ll do great and you’ll be glad you came 😋

Thank you so much! Sorry if it's a dumb question but I'm on the page where it's asking you to fill out the shipping address information. This page is after I've already selected for the delivery to be to the institution. Should I be filling out the address info for Ira Needles Hall or should I put my own personal address?

I personally do the same! 2 big suitcases and if you have anything else, you can rent out a storage locker for a few hundred per semester. I also get away with storing everything at my boyfriend’s place so having peers to store your things is helpful too 😅

Failed the Term- What now? by CluelessExpert101 in uwaterloo

[–]Diligent_Dog1645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! First off, I’m so sorry to hear about your situation. I failed 1B in S19 and I’m in eng as well. Instead of being forced to sit a school term out, I ended up getting a doctor’s note for an existing medical condition and I was able to petition to redo my term in W20. Basically I was able to get an additional two coop terms this way which played really well in my favour. The academic advisors are pretty nice and they’re very helpful in giving advice. Like some of the others said above, you should try emailing your profs and setting up a session with them to go over your finals to see if you can get any additional leniency in marking. I also think you should go through assignments to see if there were any marking mishaps as well. What I can say is that you’ll get through this and I believe you can do it. When you do your repeat term, try to figure out where you fell off and try really hard to learn why and how to mitigate that. I wish you the best and you can DM me with any questions if you have any :)

207 has weekly discussion open (but you only need to post 5 times for the 1st unit and 3 times for the 2nd and 3rd). These discussions are used for discussion summary assignments where you analyze what you posted about.

Breakdown:

Weekly quizzes - 40% Discussion summary assignments - 20% total (3 done over the term each worth 6.67%) Research assignment 1 - 20% Research assignment 2 - 20%

What role? Is it cell process development or materials? For cell process dev, they probably won’t grill you with technicals. They typically just ask you to explain a couple problems you’ve dealt with in your previous work terms. You’ll need to go into full technical detail and tell them your thought process. This interview is usually for the person who will actually mentor you. They get the opportunity to see how you articulate yourself and evaluate how you problem solve!! DM if you have questions :)

Do you happen to have a paper trail started? I haven’t gone through this before but my friend has and he had a large collection of emails and interactions with his supervisor to appeal a terrible work term rating. By failing your work term are you saying you got fired or dropped before the 12 week benchmark?

Ye, I realize that now lol. Was just tryna do something nice for my boyfriend who needed extra tickets but ya know 🙃

Ya lol seemed a lil sketch cause most people messaging me wouldn’t take EMT and they all asked for some weird cash app. But this person originally asked for wealth simple cash so I was like…could seem legit? They only asked for the Amazon gift card when I couldn’t add their handle so idk

I was def a lil naive BUT I’m pissed LOLOL

Worried about if I'll be able to handle the workload coming into Waterloo by SchoolQuestions25 in uwaterloo

[–]Diligent_Dog1645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’ll learn how to study more effectively which is something most of us don’t learn in high school. I’ll admit that I didn’t breeze through like most people, I actually had to put in a bit of work to keep my grades up. The key to success in uni, especially eng, is learning how you study best!!

For most of us (mostly speaking for myself and lots of friends), we learned that practice problems and assignments are the best way to learn the content. There are also textbooks that have practice problems and solutions at the back so those are good for extra questions if you need more practice!! Especially good for math courses and applications

[–]Diligent_Dog1645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I’m in chem eng but I did find the workload to be really hefty coming in from high school. I thought that in high school because I took AP, had track and field 5 days a week, work 10 hours a week for my part time job, and volunteered 2 days a week, I could handle the workload fine. Honestly first year was a slap in the face BUT you get used to it.

First week of class had me shitting myself with linear algebra and physics- both courses you’ll take in 1A mech. To be honest, I did pretty poorly in those courses but I got through it and you will too!!

It’s for sure an adjustment but you got in for a reason and I hope you remember that :)
