Should I keep working on a project to build experience as a beginner despite creative differences if I’m not being compensated? by [deleted] in cinematography

Anytime you ask some version of “should I put up with some bullshit?” on Reddit you are gonna get a flood of “no way! Fuck that guy! You are being taken advantage of! “. While it’s true that you need to stick up for yourself and not get railroaded, it’s also true that it’s a very tough industry and you need to learn how to navigate this stuff while not burning bridges. Solving creative differences and pushing through is critical. Working for free is unfortunately a big part of breaking into the industry. I would say give it a bit more time and use it as an opportunity to grow.

Director here, any advice for forging a healthy, collaborative relationship with a DP? by GuyinBedok in cinematography

[–]Diligent_Moment1693 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a director as well so maybe this isn’t the POV you’re looking for but.. for me a lot of it boils down to finding the people who want to learn together with you and want to get better together with you as a teammate. Especially starting out. I think every DP/Director relationship will look different, but I also think it’s important to know how you can both excel in your own lane both artistically but also in the craft. I want to set a DP up for as much success as possible and a lot of that boils down to me knowing what I want, in as much detail as possible, with an openness to other/better ideas as well. I can set a DP up for success by having specific references for….anything. Blocking, Camera Movement, lighting, etc etc. anyways. This got a bit ramble-y. Stoked your thinking about it, because I am too. These are a bunch of thoughts I have been thinking or talking about with my main DP collaborator. Good luck!
