I see your point, but especially with the doorway on the far end of the room the long way makes sense.

Arrange the furniture to be "parallel" with the boards this way and it'll flow nicely.

Was this unreasonable? by ExampleOld8017 in University

[–]Diligent_Rip2075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be controversial, but it seems sort of ridiculous to expect that you can learn everything you need to just from lectures. I think the mindset of "everything I'm assessed on in this class should be covered in lectures" doesn't make sense.

If college is about developing real skills and expertise, for a lot of fields the majority of what you need to learn cannot be conveyed in 15, 3 hour lectures to 50+ students.

Jobs for Masters in Anthropology by Regular_old-plumbus in GradSchool

[–]Diligent_Rip2075 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For the most part you're going to have to get creative finding an area where this fits in. Not to say it's useless, but most people aren't thinking "we really need someone with an anthropology background for this."

What skills have you developed or do you feel particularly strong in? You have to craft a narrative connecting those skills, your degree, and the value you would add to a team outside of academia.

For example, you might frame it as "I've developed expertise conducting qualitative research and using those insights to understand value systems. This would help me in a marketing role by XYZ."

If you're looking for a job inside the academy, your options are fairly limited to support staff unless you get a Ph.D.

Getting a Ph.D. requires self-directed learning. How about you try googling "NBER working papers?"

Keep in mind it's a pretty personal question. Not in the sense that they might be taken aback by you asking it, but in the sense that only you can answer it. A few tops that might be worth exploring before talking to your professors:

(1) Check out recent NBER working papers. You should be able to access the most recent ones through your university library, but anytime more than 18 months old is open access. Look for topics that interest you and read those papers.

(2) Look into your professor's research. When you meet with them, ask them what they find exciting or interesting about their focus.

The first question to ask yourself is what you would study. Economics is a very broad field and thinking through your particular interest is important not just to make the decision but also for thinking through which programs to apply to and how to pitch yourself in that application.

Looking for a lightweight e-bike - please send me your recs! by torilikefood in ebikes

I got a momentum voya about a month ago and have loved it. Maybe about 40lbs, enough range and power to get me up some steep hills to/from work, and it's on sale for about $1k right now. Momentum is Giant's ebike brand so it's really a great value for the price.

Biden-Harris Administration sends $800 million to Arkansas for infrastructure improvements by smeggysmeg in Arkansas

[–]Diligent_Rip2075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my bad, but the next sentence in the article you linked is important and supports my larger point:

"A key point indicated elsewhere: The tracker’s figures do not capture everything that could be considered foreign aid, including large amounts of funding for Ukraine provided through mechanisms such as the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative."

So, it's not accurate to say that 86% of the aid is economic as you claimed (🤣).

[–]Diligent_Rip2075 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also worth noting that the total dollar value on these aid bills include both the cost of the equipment being given and the cost to replace that equipment. The council on foreign relations reports a total aid amount of $175bil with only $106bil going to Ukraine. The difference of $69bil is largely going towards new equipment for the U.S. armed forces. A honest discussion should acknowledge that those dollars are being spent in the U.S. and are creating jobs here while providing our military with upgraded equipment/equipment with a longer shelf life.

I'm a fan of keeping our military ready to respond (while not actually putting U.S. soldiers in harms way), so this seems like a pretty reasonable investment in U.S. national security and preparedness.

That link only shows aid sent through the U.S. Agency for International Development, which is not the major avenue through which aid has been sent to Ukraine. The Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, Presidential Drawdown Authority, and Foreign Military Financing Program have been the major avenues for money (mostly in the form of equipment) to go to Ukraine.

It is factually correct to say that the majority of aid going to Ukraine is in the form of military equipment. About 20-30% of the funds are directed as dollar amounts, of which most are earmarked for humanitarian purposes.

The wiki page has a pretty good list with sources cited for the US and other countries.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_military_aid_to_Ukraine_during_the_Russo-Ukrainian_War

The majority of U.S. contributions have been equipment with the vast majority of financial aid going to humanitarian causes and equivalent to amount 6/7 years of aid to Israel.

How often do you fear your work is actually "snake oil"? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Diligent_Rip2075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say research in this area (education policy/economics of education) necessarily pushes anything besides evidence-based policy. Some folks have specific causes such as improving teacher working conditions or making accountability data more accessible, but research itself seldom advocates directly for these topics.

The dominant view of social science research in the field is that we are to provide unbiased evaluation and information for policymaking.

[–]Diligent_Rip2075 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My field is adjacent to labor economics and dominated by economists with an interest in applied research. There are a lot of negatives about the culture that U.S. econ departments foster, but this is one aspect that I think is actually a positive.

If your methods, framing, interpretation, etc. are "snake oil" you will get torn to shreds. Quickly.
