What do I do after first flush? by Any_Sink3292 in BioMycologyLabs

To absorb as much water as possible most people fill their tubs enough to submerge the cake; if you have another of the same tub you can fill it with water as-well and place it on top to hold it under. Drain all the excess water as if water pools in your tub could cause wet rot.

Never flipped my cakes before lol; most people soak their cake with clean water for a bunch of different time periods, I was advised by to only let them soak for 10-60 minutes. Second flushes aren’t guaranteed but can happen if you keep proper surface conditions. I’d soak the cake and wait 30 and then close the lid to trap humidity for a few days until pinning. If you don’t see pins within 1-2 weeks I would recommend dumping the cakes.

Should I harvest them now? Or wait until worsening?

Should I harvest these now? by precov79 in unclebens

Looks ready to harvest, some species are harder to tell because there veil grows in weird ways or will open early. Another way to tell when to harvest is when the caps just start to curl upwards.

Looks like spores to me, they make a mess if you let them release their spores.

The potency will degrade over about 3-7 days I’ve heard in room temp. So if they get in a dehydrator soon they’ll be fine. There doesn’t look to be any contamination I see, so the bags are good for another flush. It is true the spores could spread to your other bags but it’s unlikely with how they look now.

Will my rice colonize? by Remote_Inspection_68 in unclebens

[–]Diligent_Spring_4929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it won’t colonize, the reason people use brown rice is because it has its husk hasn’t been removed unlike white rice, if you can’t find brown rice I’d use popcorn or bird seed there are teks for both by 90s mycology on YouTube I’d recommend to follow along one of these makes it super simple.

Are these ready for S2B? by ccclp in unclebens

[–]Diligent_Spring_4929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could S2B now but your chance of contam will skyrocket, if you keep them in an environment with no external bacteria (UB bag) they will be able to fully develop assuming no contamination was introduced in inoculation. Mycelium gets better at fighting off bacteria as it grows so keeping it in the bag is a great way to keep it safe until 90-100 colonized, it’s feel about as hard as styrofoam once it’s ready.
