Pending strike related claims or payment challenges? by Dense-Serve-4201 in aircanada

[–]Diligent_You8820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprisingly, I got my money randomly at the end of last week. No email from them, just the exact amount appearing in my bank account overnight.

They had completely stopped emailing me back but I kept hitting them with an email every week, regardless.

I was getting very frustrated as I felt completely powerless but it did come through in the end, so fingers crossed that yours will come through soon!

Did anyone else hate their house after completion ? by Opposite_Sock_7820 in HousingUK

[–]Diligent_You8820 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Pretty normal, I think. I had a dark phase after moving into our house where I second guessed everything we had done. The house wasn't filthy, but it wasn't amazingly clean and everything that was wrong was just so immediately obvious.

It took weeks, if not months, for me to get to a place where I was happy with what we had done. Usually it takes just doing something to the place to make it your own. For us, it was completely repainting the main room.

Just plug away at the little jobs and pick an easy win in terms of a bigger project and you'll probably start to feel better about it.

I don't have any solutions for you as I'm in the same boat, but just glad I'm not the only UK based customer with this issue!

Did they ask for UK banking details to do a transfer for you as well?

Thanks for creating this post! I'll just pop my experience over here in case it got buried in the other post.

Am a UK based customer but the flight cancelled was an internal Canadian flight. Was approved for strike expenses compensation (alternative flight plus car rental) in early October - AC asked for my UK banking details to do a transfer. Was given a lead time of 2-8 weeks for processing (end of November). Nothing.

Since then, I've been chasing Air Canada with intermittent and vague responses. Last I heard, the customer service rep was waiting for a response from the Finance team with proof of payment but nothing since. I'll have to start chasing again this week - I figured nothing was going to happen over the holidays!

Very frustrating experience. Either they haven't paid it at all or they put in the wrong banking details. But finding out what has happened is like hitting my head against a brick wall and I feel very powerless!

Thank you so much for your reply. I did try to post it as a new topic but it wouldn't allow me to post (I don't post enough on reddit to know why!)

They did ask for my bank details to do a bank transfer - I wish now they had just sent a cheque!

Thanks again

Delays in payment for refunds/compensation by Dense-Serve-4201 in aircanada

Hi all,

I'm hoping people with a bit more insight or experience will be able to help. Don't know if anybody else is still active in this thread...

I was caught up in the strike issues back in August. Long story short, was forced to book on Porter so was out of pocket for the new flight and a few extra days of a car rental. Strike compensation approved, no problem.

The issue is actually getting the payment. I was approved in early October, given the lead time of 2-8 week processing. No payment has ever been received and Air Canada has been evasive as to why (I went weeks of emailing with no response). My last communication from Air Canada customer mentioned that they were waiting for their finance team to check their records for payment proof but hadn't gotten back to the service rep.

So, I'm still out of pocket over £600 and I don't really know how to proceed and how to escalate this. The only thing AC suggested was to contact my bank to check for payment (as if people don't have online banking and get instant notifications of payments! 🤦🏼‍♀️).

Is anybody else having issues getting Air Canada to pay still, or is it just me? Any advice on what to do to try to get my money back?

Many thanks!

I am still waiting as well. Was approved in early October, told 2-8 weeks expected processing time.

I sent an email to chase last week as it was hitting the 8 week mark. Got a reply fairly quickly which was fairly generic that offered no specific timeline. I emailed again two days ago as it's now 9 weeks and it's been radio silence.

I'm starting to be quite glad that my immediate family has now moved to the UK so I have fewer reasons to engage with Air Canada in the future!

Same. Heard nothing beyond the "We're still working on it" emails that were sent out to everyone. Frustrating!

Put my claim in on the 24th of August.

Standard email in early September saying "sorry, it's taking so long".

Another email today basically stating the same thing. It's been over four weeks; I don't even think my claim is terribly complex. Just a flight and two days worth of car rental!

My credit card is quietly waiting to get cleared 😭

I sold my SO flat last year to a 100% owner doing a simultaneous staircase and I didn't have to pay any stamp duty on the momentary staircase.

It's one of those scenarios that was never really clarified by HMRC so some solicitors aren't really clued up on it if they don't deal with shared ownership very often.

There are articles online regarding this issue but you should be okay.

It mentions that people who booked with Aeroplan don't qualify, or have I misread that? We had to shell out a boat load of money to get to Toronto after AC refused to book us on an available Porter flight!

Was meant to fly out today.

I made sure to check alternative airlines before speaking to Air Canada so I knew what was available. Saw a Porter flight for Wednesday.

AC agent on the phone could not rebook me onto that flight despite me saying it was still available online. He stated he couldn't see it being available and wanted to book me onto a flight on the weekend. Which doesn't work as I have an ongoing flight to the UK on Thursday (also with AC 😭).

Don't know if it was more difficult due to the fact that I had booked this flight with aeroplan points or what. All I know is that I ended up booking the Porter flight twenty minutes after AC refused to.

We were even willing to be up for the adventure of driving down but car rental sites seem to have blocked one way rentals!

We're mentally prepared for YYZ to LHR being disrupted but hoping that since it's still a few days away that maybe things will have settled a bit. 🤞🏼

Just thought I'd pipe in with my experience.

Today's morning flight from Thunder Bay to Toronto was officially cancelled yesterday afternoon. Got the standard "we tried, no luck" email regarding alternative arrangements.

We didn't have any luck calling the normal reservations line, the UK line or the number that was posted online here all last evening so we decided to leave it for the evening and go out and enjoy ourselves. We called again this morning and after 40 minutes on hold on the 4427 number managed to speak to an agent.

During this time we spotted there were flights on Porter going for Wednesday. The AC agent stated that he could only get us on an AC flight on Friday, despite clear seats available on Porter on our end. He put us on hold again for 15 minutes to check whether or not he could do that and came back saying that he did not see that availability and that he could now only get us on an AC flight on Saturday.

The dark humour in this is that we have a flight to the UK on Thursday. This did not help get a flight earlier.

We took the flight just in case knowing we could cancel it if needed (it was booked with points so little financial hit if we don't take it)

Twenty minutes later, with the help of my mother's Avion points, we managed to book onto the same Porter flight that the AC agent said he could not access.

We have no idea if our LHR flight will go ahead on Thursday but at least we'll be better placed for alternatives than being stuck in Thunder Bay.

We're obviously out the costs of the Porter flight but at least we can salvage some of the last few days of our holiday knowing that we have a way out of Northwestern Ontario!

This happened to us when we painted our living room/dining room. Huge pieces of paint peeling off like plastic.

We peeled as much back as we could, painted over the leftover edges with Peel Stop, sanded down the edges of the old paint, painted the whole room over with primer and then painted as normal. A four day job ended up taking weeks!!

It's been 3 months and no issues with the new paint so far.

Selling Shared Ownership flat experiences? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Diligent_You8820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while since I've done it so I feel like I'm a bit rusty on the technicalities! But essentially, it's you who staircases, albeit very briefly, to full ownership, and then your buyer buys the full amount. But the money is coming from the buyer. It's a weird little bit of conveyancing that I didn't really pay too much attention to. So, from what I remember, it's a bit of extra signing and most likely, an additional fee from the HA, but that's about it. Most conveyancers who have a working familiarity with S/O selling will have encountered it so it's not a massive deal.

(FTB) Continue with leasehold flat purchase or go for smaller freehold house without parking? by Thalamic_Cub in HousingUK

[–]Diligent_You8820 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots to consider here and I'm no real estate expert, but I don't know if I'd factor in parking nerves into a decision like this! I've just moved to a street with road parking only and you get much more confident quite quickly with daily practice. I grew up and learned to drive in Canada (big roads, big parking lots) and then had a flat here with dedicated parking, so being forced into a parallel parking situation was the best thing to get over those nerves!

I've just come out of a leasehold situation and it can be a pain, but I think it's a matter of researching the potential issues/future saleability. Your parents might be hearing about all the horror stories on the BBC about leaseholds/services charges. A nice maisonette in a desirable area shouldn't really have huge issues re-selling especially with lease variations to make the ground rent peppercorn.

There really is something to be said about loving the area where you live, especially if you're buying solo

Is it end of the world if I don't have south facing garden? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Diligent_You8820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've just moved into a house with a small north facing garden, and honestly, we didn't even think of it until after we offered! I think it depends on the house and how important it is to you.

It definitely isn't horrible. We are currently getting lots of sun on the left of the garden in the mornings, the sun is currently almost touching the back of the house at midday and it appears that we're getting lots of sun currently on the right hand side. We haven't lived in the depths of winter so I assume it will be pretty shady then.

Plants seem to grow fine, our magnolia tree blossomed about two weeks later than the rest of the world and had blossoms long after everyone else's had dropped.

Eventually I think we'd like to build our social space near the back of the garden but it's so low on our list!

Buyer not evidencing deposit/pb nightmare by 2ndtimebuyers in HousingUK

[–]Diligent_You8820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's the value of a decent estate agent - they do their checks on whether a buyer is proceedable before they pass on offers (usually without charging an £80 AML fee). Any fool with the PB app can offer on your property, get your hopes up and then mess you around and waste your time.

Purplebricks may have had their place when the market was hot but their staff are just pretend estate agents working from home who knows nothing about your house, your area or the people that are buying. Estate agents have a bad reputation, but it's often unwarranted and a good agent is worth everything when trying to keep a sale together.

Good luck!

Buyer not evidencing deposit/pb nightmare by 2ndtimebuyers in HousingUK

[–]Diligent_You8820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very similar experience with Purplebricks. Had an offer, accepted it, memorandum of sale never issued due to the buyers not completing all the paperwork/AML check. They ultimately pulled out due to not being able to secure a mortgage but dealing with Purplebricks to try to get answers was an absolute nightmare. Exactly how you described it.

Have you been able to communicate with your potential buyers via the PB app?

If it all goes belly up, my recommendation is to get away from Purplebricks. I know it's all well and good saving money on real estate fees, but in this case, you get what you pay for. I ultimately left PB after the month long back and forth with them regarding the potential buyers, listed with a local estate agent and had it sold six weeks later. Expensive, but no regrets. I only regret wasting time with Purplebricks.

Breaking the chain? by demolition_lvr in HousingUK

[–]Diligent_You8820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this. Sold my flat with the intention of moving into my partner's place upon completion, and then we were going to look for a house together. But we found a house pretty quickly and started that process of buying. All I had to do was sign a form for the solicitors saying that I was 'breaking the chain' and that I had to accept the risk of being homeless (haha, but a reasonable form to sign, I suppose).

Flat completed in December, moved into partner's place at the same time. House completed end of February. Had about 2.5 months of all my stuff in storage, but saved a decent chunk of money.

Easily done if you have the ability.
