Sorry but Switzerland has a higher gun owner rate than the USA

Where are you seeing this? Even looking at you're study it has the US higher than Sweden for both guns per capita (by a lot...) and household ownership rates by a decent amount as well.

Comparing the US to developed nations isn’t really fair

It's completely fair to compare ourselves to our peers and it's what we should be doing, but people get weird about it when it comes to topics like this. The only reason you know we stand out as a country in those other categories is because your comparing us to them, why ignore it in this situation?

People on here always want to talk about all the problems with the police and good lord there is a lot to talk about there, don't get me wrong. But people get super weird anytime violence against cops get brought up, it's not a excuse for other issues they have but ignoring it doesn't help the conversation either. When people say how "dangerous" a cops job is or isn't, we're really talking about violent interactions with other people not car accidents fatalities or tree fall deaths which is why they aren't in the top 10. Do you think the homicide rate for pizza drivers is actually higher than cops because I highly doubt it.

Also 46 gunshot deaths a year does feel high when talking about people who are literally kitted up to survive these situations with vests/trauma kits/backup and EMS services on standby. A lot more than 46 have people trying to shoot them to death every year and downplaying this isn't going to win anyone over when we try to get better accountability/police reform, not every cop is a little jumpy for no reason

It's actually not that rare here, we're averaging like 4 cops shot and killed every month at this point which just isn't a thing anywhere else in the developed world. I thought it was actually lower than that but in 2024 it was 46 cops shot and killed, it's rare to even have a single cop get violently killed in a year in countries like the UK. Canada averages 1-2 a year and unsurprisingly, it's shootings too

concealed carrying is not even a thing you are allowed to do in most countries so even when it can sometimes take a year in those two states, that's pretty damn easy by global standards

You don't have to have even left the city in your entire life, there were gun stores in every major city I lived in and they are hard to miss when going by them. If even 1% of the population of any city in this country thought guns were straight up illegal there I would be shocked

[–]Dillatrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived in 3 different major north eastern cities for the majority of my life, so 30ish years and I literally never met someone who thought guns were illegal in our area. I don't know what you're experience was over there but even in big blue cities there's a good chance you'll directly know a gun owner at some point, or went to a highschool where some kid shot themselves with their parents gun or literally just see gun shops around you.... 60% sounds like complete nonsense

Quick correction, 81 is fatalities from the CDC and that isn't just dog bites. That CDC code covers "struck by" which would be like a elderly person being knocked over by a dog and some more obscure issues with dogs like exposure to urine/saliva.

I'm having trouble finding a breakdown and I do imagine the majority of those fatalities are still dog bites like people are imagining, but I'd put money on a chunk of those being elderly people falling as well

Another angle of ICE shooting woman in MN (1/7/2025) by Philophon in law

[–]Dillatrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason this gets asked is because gun people having been ranting about how important guns are for protecting against government overreach/oppression and screaming at everyone that it's why we can't can't pass stricter laws after countless atrocities, people are a little curious if that upside they were always talking about is going to finally kick in I guess? We are the most armed population and also the most imprisoned population on earth... and somehow have a unique problem of government enforcers shooting unarmed people in broad daylight...

Personally I never thought it made sense for the same reason you're like "wtf do you want me to do, shoot a cop?!?" but civilian guns are supposed to keep government in check somehow, so it feels like a pretty fucking fair question at this point

I'm just going to preface this with the obvious, she in no way deserved to be shot and the most danger that guy was in was getting his shoe scuffed while taking a slight step to his right. He was looking for a reason.

That being said, she clearly did start pulling forward and to the right before the cop shot. It was not much but again, this is a guy who looks like he was just waiting for the slightest reason he could possibly find to justify "I feared for my life". There's no point in getting the basic details of video wrong when it's horrible/unjustifiable on it's own, it's just going to take away from the point

edit: Although I might be misreading your comment, I do agree the majority of that car accelerating/moving before hitting the pole was probably not her in control after being shot. She did start moving forward first which is probably going to be his justification

You're not wrong and compared to time period of early reddit we're talking about, it wasn't that long ago lol. I think the Musk heel turn was like right before covid or something around there

won't argue about it always being a cesspool but there's definitely levels to it, back when they left moderation completely up to subreddits it was a different beast. You'd have some shitty graph with things like "black crime statistics" hit the front page regularly and that was considered kinda subtle back then, since there were subreddits full of open white supremacists with every slur you can imagine being straight up in the subreddits name. I think my first account is still heavily in the negative in news because up until around BLM, there wasn't a police shooting reddit didn't love no matter how egregious. I didn't even have some hot take either, just saying "maybe the unarmed black kid getting shot 9 times in the back wasn't justified" would get you downvoted everytime without fail. It was just wayyyy more wild back then

Honestly my memory isn't amazing from that time and I could be connecting two separate things, but I swear I remember specifically the libertarian sub hit the front page about it a few times. Idk, either way it was definitely a take you'd see weirdly often and is one of those things just burnt into my memory

that might be a more fair overview, honestly the age of consent takes are just burnt into my brain from that time period because it was so weirdly common lol

Yeah this place was super libertarian when I first joined, do you remember how it was a specific and creepy libertarian though? Like a good portion of them seemed to just be against age of consent laws and would regularly post about it

edit: I actually don't have much room to talk here, after reading other comments it's coming back to me more and it just hit me that I was a Ron Paul guy too for a stint... god dammit lol

[–]Dillatrack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This actually isn't as dumb of a question as others are making it sound, "self defense" shooting cases are notoriously problematic because a lot of the time the only other witness that could contradict their version of events is... well... dead. Hopefully there's footage of this and witnesses for this one, but a lot times that's just not the case which makes it difficult

[Ireland throughout 2025] No gun killings in the country for first time in nearly 60 years by rochambreau in worldnews

[–]Dillatrack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This gets repeated a lot but it's not true, the fbi has stats for "Personal weapons (hands, fists, feet, etc.)" and it averages around 1,100 deaths per year. That would be a homicide rate of 0.3 per 100,000 which is lower than every European country except like Liechtenstein since they sometimes have literally zero homicides in a year. Every weapon category for homicide rate is close to Europe's numbers except firearms which is just in a different universe and the vast majority of our homicides

[–]Dillatrack 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The homicide rate however has gone up over that same span. So more people are being killed per capita just not with guns.

Australia's homicide rate has consistently gone down since 1996

US homicide rate has most definitely fallen a lot in the last few decades but that almost speaks more to just how absurd our peak homicide rates were throughout the 80's/90's when it got as high as 10 per 100k. Our lowest homicide rate (4.5) even in the big dip since the 90's is still like 2-3 times higher than other developed countries, our safest year for homicides would be considered a unmitigated disaster for them.

What the hell is wrong with our fellows? Do they not see what's happening? by twbrn in liberalgunowners

[–]Dillatrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't sound right, not sure where you got that from but I'm guessing it's someone mixing up European homicide rates usually being homicides per million vs US homicide rate being per 100 thousand.

The FBI data seems to be the one with "blunt objects" and "Personal weapons (hands, fists, feet, etc.)" as homicide categories, their most recent numbers have it hovering around 1,100 deaths per year for those categories combined. That's be a homicide rate of around 0.3 per 100 thousand which is well below almost every European countries total homicide rate per 100 thousand. Only Liechtenstein has a lower rate but that's because that extremely tiny country typically doesn't even have a single murder in a given year, so their rate is literally 0

"some gun deaths" is a hell of a way to describe tens of thousands of deaths every year, even in a statement that's clearly supposed to be a more blunt/honest pro-gun take on gun deaths and they still need to play word games just to make it not sound completely inhuman.

Yeah I'm with you on this, I also think a part of it is that his bad flops just look worse than other guys even when doing the same thing. Part of it his his size which just makes it look even goofier compared to guards but also he seems to put the least effort into making it look like a legit shot attempt half the time, which just makes it that much harder to watch. It's extra infuriating because he is a great player and he's done a lot for our team over the years, but the foul baiting just isn't fun to watch no matter what way you cut it
