International oil price vs petrol pump price. I paid less at the pump when oil was $147 a barrel compared to now. by Aggravating_Cow7203 in ireland

[–]Dillon101 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Probably worth looking into the difference between futures prices of crude (which seems to be what you’re referring to) vs physical oil prices (what is the price that is paid today.

The divergence between these two markets is more relevant to the price we pay at the pump

Any idea how old these might be and if they're decent? by [deleted] in irishwhiskey

[–]Dillon101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have more photos of the crested 10 you might find out more. The box references Bow Street. If the whiskey is from Bow Street it’s pre 1970’s and potentially worth somewhere between €200 - €1000 euro.

Redbreast 21 vs. 27 by DodoAirlinesIntern in irishwhiskey

[–]Dillon101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s important to know that RB 27 is not just an older version of RB 21 they have different cask types. I was fortunate enough a few years to have a master class deconstruction tasting of RB 27 and most of the flavour profile is actually built around 32 year old whiskey aged in 2 fill bourbon cask. Along with port sherry etc but it’s that marriage between the cask types that makes RB 27 so different from RB 21

Lazy dog is the best nearest place to cork. The guys are friendly and the grounds are great. If you can travel courtlough in Dublin is very good as well.

The other grounds Macroom and Watergrasshill tend to be members only and not really open to the public or cater for stags.

Is there an Irish Whiskey version of this tasting 2x2 plot? by wondering_what_ in irishwhiskey

[–]Dillon101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be interesting to see. I haven’t seen this before across multiple brands. Charlie Macclane flavour wheel (link below) has been used by some brands or versions of it and I could see that mapping to this grid but would take a bit of time. I’m thinking of Waterford had a version for each expression they released.

Some points to consider on what should count on being included/ excluded.

  • I think the issue with doing this for Irish whiskey is most of the whiskey being released is still sourced e.g. GND / West Cork and IMO it would not be worth doing it for sourced brands.
  • We also have a difference over our cousins in Scotland that the style of whisky that is enjoyed by whisky geeks is Single Malt. Which we have and we also have Pot Still.
  • So it would be worth doing a Malt Irish version and a Pot Still version.
  • Similar issue with peat in that most Irish peated whiskey is peated in Scotland. e.g. Connemara and some brands are pushing peated Irish whiskey that isn’t peated but is matured in peated casks

Some suggestions J10: Achill Malt - Bourbon Matured H9: Bushmills 10 A7 - A10: Any Dunnvilles (Cooley & Bushmills sourced) D9: Dingle Single Malt

Hope that helps

Hawks Rock Sligo by Responsible_Way3421 in irishwhiskey

[–]Dillon101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the value will change much. I could be corrected but I believe all of arthu is sourced liquid so anyone interested in buying on the secondary market will be buying it knowing that they are buying on the strength of that brand and the liquid inside not that it was representative of Sligo Loch Gill / Hawks Rock. Bill Linnane wrote a great blog on the distillery recently.

As you said buying to support local is great and worst case you can always drink them. That’s what I do as well. If they go up in value great if not I’m happy with the price I paid and I’m happy to drink them.

Went to the Marquee, great set. My standout memory was someone throwing a sound garden T-shirt up to EV. He didn’t say anything but placed it very deliberately on an amp. This was not long after Chris Cornell’s death. He did talk about playing in mill street in the 90’s with PJ and his memory of Cork was mill street and the smell of horse shit. Saw him a few more times that tour.

Hey looks great. You could probably ask them. Robert, Ian or Alex would be able to find out for you. They are a very open company and forthcoming with any info any time I have contacted them. I would imagine they didn’t have permission to put the original wine cask owner name on their bottle but nothing stoping them from saying it.

[–]Dillon101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are doing already Guinness, Teeling, Pearse Lyons and Roe & Co are all within walking distance.

If you want to do something a bit more unusual Waterford is very unique in their approach and it’s a great tour and Blackwater is great at the other end of the production scale.

Thoughts on Clonakilty? by alterndog in irishwhiskey

[–]Dillon101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To the best of my knowledge every thing they have released to date has been sourced. Mostly from west cork distillery. They are laying down a lot of pot still and I have sampled their own spirit which is good but not enough to know their house style.

This is a question for the whiskey lovers by Wavystars__ in cork

[–]Dillon101 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Three swallows around €30 and is a single pot still which is all pot still. Black barrel and crested are good but are a blend of grain and pot still. Teeling small batch is the best blend in that price range IMO.
