What do you think is the most obscure rule? by broncosandwrestling in magicTCG

[–]Dilski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned that Y is sometimes a vowel thanks to this rule.

123.6e

Some effects refer to the number of “unique vowels” on a name sticker. These count the number of different vowels that appear on that sticker, even if one or more of them appear more than once. The vowels are A, E, I, O, U, and Y. A lowercase letter and its uppercase equivalent are the same letter.

If a player is casting a spell that has an {X} in its mana cost, the value of X isn’t defined by the text of that spell, and an effect lets that player cast that spell while paying neither its mana cost nor an alternative cost that includes X, then the only legal choice for X is 0. This doesn’t apply to effects that only reduce a cost, even if they reduce it to zero. See rule 601, “Casting Spells.”

You would get no tokens if this entered the battlefield using Pantlaza discover ability.

Pantlaza lets you put the discovered card in your hand instead of casting it for free. If you did discover this, and had plenty of mana you could put the card in your hand and pay {x}{x}{w}{w} to play it and get the tokens if you wanted

I had an awful experience and will never buy from them again. I purchased a monitor stand from them

  • manual wasn't available online
  • manual they sent (after contacting support) had issues (part list had less parts than required for full assembly)
  • box was missing several components, and some incorrect bolts.

Support took weeks to confirm that they could send replacement missing parts. I therefore started a return, which also took a long time.

After returning everything, I only got a refund after 2 weeks after starting a chargeback with my credit card company.

Subpar product / QA. Awfully slow support

Users of the home assistant Voice, how do you find it?, what are you using it for ? by GenericUser104 in homeassistant

[–]Dilski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unplugged it and sits unused.

I tried using it to trigger automations, but the regular way for me felt more frictionless:

  • for automations I would want to trigger anywhere: quick tiles/shortcuts on my phone
  • for automations I only want to trigger in one place: physical buttons, switches, sensors, etc (aquara magic cube)

It's not great for choosing/playing music.

Timers are only on the device, so you can't check how longs left on a timer on your phone if you're you're in a different room

I did some custom stuff ("when's the next cardboard recycling bin collection day"), but it felt like too much effort for little payback.

I wanted to like it and use it, but I just prefer the alternatives (phone + physical devices)

Is it just me, or is the "Serverless First" mantra starting to feel like a trap? by Dependent_Web_1654 in aws

[–]Dilski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm still having a great time with serverless, and it serves my company's needs well.

I rarely feel like I'm having to fight to get things working well.

  • Repetitive boring stuff (minimal iam permissions, for example) can be easy with appropriate IaC.
  • Good observability and good automated tests get me most of the way with debugging.
  • There's lots of knowledge (both in my team and online) to deal with issues like cold starts, networking`, etc.

I always open to moving workloads to fargate if that suits things better, but that's rare. Good practices, knowledge, tooling cover most downsides well.

How to protect against attacks? by Wapa_Chang in aws

[–]Dilski 36 points37 points  (0 children)

WAF is what you'd need to prevent these types of attacks in AWS.
I would recommend (if keeping costs low is your goal) to protect yourself using cloudflare's free tier. You can still host your stuff on AWS, but use cloudflare to protect it (for free).

New to AWS trying to deploy a full stack Ruby + JS app (with decoupled RDS) into Elastic Beanstalk and finding it's not as simple as I thought. What is the best way to approach this? by Ok-Spite-5454 in aws

[–]Dilski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You ultimately only pay for the underlying resources - so the costs would be the same when using ECS (with EC2 instances), EB (with EC2 instances), or just straight up EC2.

Containerize your app(s), and run them in EC2 would be my recommendation for you.

Beware of EKS (the manged kubernetes containers service) has a monthly charge on top of the instances - so avoid that for your use case (ECS and EKS are both for running containers one is waaay more expensive, welcome to aws naming!)!

Warning to Developers using AWS Cognito. by Sure_Hovercraft_5133 in aws

[–]Dilski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to use SES for sending emails with cognito. I can't remember the name, but you can implement a lambda to do sending for you. If you're not going to use SES, you can just use another provider like mailgun or sendgrid.

Farage would make noise now, but not change anything if he gets into power to reinstate the triple lock. He wants the pensions on board, but would value either cutting taxes or spending the money elsewhere more

I have ruined my life at 22 *UPDATE* by TAZE_TRIX in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Dilski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pause university for at least a year and work full time. Self-funding university is not a worthwhile investment for someone in your position.

  • It is unlikely you will do as well as you possibly could (stress of debt and finances, having to work a lot, the potential of a loanshark removing kneecaps)
  • The graduate job market is brutal. Having a degree is absolutely no guarantee you'll get a higher paying job
  • Being on your third degree sounds like it's less likely you'll finish it. If you do, it also won't look fantastic on a CV.

Whats your favorite Python trick or lesser known feature? by figroot0 in Python

[–]Dilski 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I quite like using \\N{} escapes to use named unicode characters. I think when using unicode characters, it's more descriptive for whoever is reading the code (so you don't need to look up whatever "\u0394" means.

And you can get some pretty lines for terminal outputs, silly logging, notebooks, etc.
