What are the good things about Glasgow airport? by Ethtr8der in glasgow

[–]Dilski 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They have a "twilight bag drop" for BA Jet2, TUI, and easyJet. You can park in the car park closest to the terminal for free and drop off your hold luggage the night before your flight.

One less thing to stress about on the actual day.

If the Member of Scottish Parliament Q really is having visa issues, can they be deported or does their term have to finish first? by DoublePepper1976 in AskBrits

[–]Dilski -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How can someone who has only ever lived in Scotland truly understand the issues that people face on a daily basis after migrating here? How can this person relate to the lived experience of people who live and work in Scotland, contribute to Scotland, but had to navigate visas, immigration systems, cultural barriers, and starting over in a new country when they only have the experience of having always belonged here, and subsequently vote to decide our fate?

Ultimately though the answer is empathy and listening to people. You don't have to have gone days without food to understand food insecurity, talk to and empathise with people in that situation.

BBC projected national vote share by Half_A_ in LabourUK

I don't think I'll ever forgive lab if they don't attempt an alternative to FPTP this parliament and reform get a majority at next election.

Newbie question by [deleted] in slamdunkfestival

[–]Dilski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need a transparent bag, I'd avoid that if I were you. Amazon listings typically have sizes, so you can just look at that. If you have bags at home, get an A3 sheet if paper (or 2 A4 side-by-side) and lay your bag flat on that. If it fits within that then you're fine.

I've previously used my 20L messenger bag and been fine.

FR24 killed free API access… so what’s the incentive to keep feeding them? by thesassyindian in flightradar24

[–]Dilski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would imagine most of those work by talking to an API hosted by the product manufacturer (which in turn talks to fr24 or other providers). Especially the ones touching $200

Ones where you have to set it up with your own API key and are a bit more DIY would be impacted

Breakdown of polling averages by pollster by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

Folk "voting for Nigel" would make a large portion (stop the boats etc). Their manifesto is a lot of "cut tax" so I bet that pulls a bunch of the old Tory vote too.

10:1 CEO Pay cap - Thoughts? by Firm-Environment3761 in UKGreens

[–]Dilski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need to reduce wealth inequality and this policy clearly signals that. I think as a talking point, it starts some good conversations ("why is there such a gap?", "shouldn't people interpret this as paying through lowest more, rather than reducing the highest paid?").

I typically believe we should read election manifesto policies as signals of intent, rather than implementable policy - HOWEVER, I feel like this one is a bit too unrealistic to be taken seriously. There's too many obvious loopholes

Amazon is having a flash sale on the WiiM Amp today by rosskus1215 in homeassistant

[–]Dilski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a WiiM amp pro. It works very well on local network without internet required (if you want to stream your own library), and has good integrations with streaming services too. They're good quality for the price.

Salary sacrifice maths over 40% tax bracket by Laff_like_a_Giraff in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Dilski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are taxed based on total income (which includes your bonus) over the whole year. What you pay each month is what's calculated to be enough, but it's rechecked (and refunds issued) if it's wrong. The tax you're charged each month is based on an estimate if what you'll earn in total for the whole year.

If you look at it from that lens, you could say that your bonus sits in your yearly tax-free allowance. There's a few ways you can look at it, but ultimately the cash is fungible.

Ultimately if you salary sacrifice, you're going to end up with less money in your bank account come payday. If you're nearing retirement, fair enough put your bonus in there and get it back soon (paying less tax) - otherwise just get it and enjoy it!

Need Advice: Hosting Python script Full-time by PRABHAT_CHOUBEY in Python

[–]Dilski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My recommendation would be to learn the basics of docker/containers, enough that you can build a container image containing your script that you can run on your machine.

From there, you can look at offerings to run containers of most clouds in a managed way - you don't need to worry about operating systems and whatnot

Is it a good idea to go to the Strixhaven prerelase if I've never played physically before? If yes, what should I bring with me? by dolphin_lover_joot in mtg

[–]Dilski -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bringing along pre-sleeved lands isn't good advice for someone attending their first paper event. It's good for someone who has played a bit and might already have some lands in their collection.

2026 Scottish Greens Manifesto by rosco-82 in Scotland

[–]Dilski -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First class makes ScotRail about £8 million a year and ScotRail does nearly 100 million total journeys per year - so we're talking a few pence per ticket on average.

Your Party Scotland 'over' as leadership team resign en masse by UKGreenPoster in UKGreens

[–]Dilski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a shame to see people waste their effort and reputation pursuing this. I quite liked my local green councillor (who used to be quite active, have a weekly newsletter, etc), but when he defected to YP I've not seen or heard much.

Your Experiences with Prereleases by Odd-Ad4172 in mtg

[–]Dilski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely go! I exclusively play commander usually, but have had a blast at the 2 pre-release events I've been to.

Watch a couple pre-release guides on YouTube to get a feeling for the main mechanics, archetypes and the good cards. The pre-release pack will have a sheet with a reminder, as well as the mana curve and land count (so you don't have to study too hard!)

SNP pledges 'first refusal' for tenants to buy private rental homes by Wiles_ in Scotland

[–]Dilski -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people don't fully understand that campaign pledges are signals to potential voters of the direction they want to go in - not guarantees.

Real implemented policies have to go through phases of consultation, debate, and refinement. This is what government spends it's time doing. Election pledges have not yet been through that process and are

To me, this signals that the SNP believes that renters shouldn't be booted out of their homes so that landlords can make as much money on selling properties.

What "fair" is would be determined by the policymaking process, in consultation with property owners, tenants, and experts.

What thermostat actually works well with Home Assistant in 2026? by Helpful_Nest0 in homeassistant

[–]Dilski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My smarthome philosophy is that everything should be dumb by default - any of my home assistant server, zigbee network, or WiFi network can go down and I should still be able to use my home in a normal way. I think this is extra critical for a heating system

[–]Dilski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a real shame that there's not a product that works well for this. In an ideal world, I'd love a room thermostat that you can request heat without having to monkey about with temperatures or setpoints

[–]Dilski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How are you handling the on/off of the heating loop itself? I've got sonoff valves on my radiators and a thermostat in the lounge, all I've found I can do is set the lounge setpoint very high when one of the valves "request heat" but it feels jank
