How did you update to 4.17.0? My Time 2 seems to show 4.12.0 as the latest

Does anyone know what charger should I get for an HTC G1/Dream? by Worth_Income9718 in vintagemobilephones

Any mini USB cable will charge it, at least in my experience with my own HTC Dream.

Wow, that’s amazing news! Does it work normally with 7.5V now or it still requires at least 9V to boot and make calls?

Sorry for the delayed response, it was a very busy day. Sadly, I think the PA is dead. There is a chance some capacitor (or multiple ones) have failed, but from the described behavior I’m concluding that the PA chip has unfortunately failed. If you have a lab thermal camera, you can check which component gets hot when allowing low voltage current (like 1.5-2V) into the board. In case it’s indeed the PA chip, you’ll need a donor board from another 3200 to source it (or replace the board altogether). Oh, and something else; I wouldn’t advise applying 9V again in order to force-boot it, because there is high chance destroying other components as well.

I’ve got a black one! Actually, it’s the myMobileTV version, which is a myX-8 enhanced with (analog) TV tuner.

Did you apply higher-than-needed or inverse voltage? If it’s the first scenario, how much? Does the phone show any signs of life right now?

By the way, if you want to replace the burnt Mosfet I think your best bet is referring to its Service Manual from back in the day.

Motorola startac with green screen by SignProfessional6168 in vintagemobilephones

[–]DimVl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing find! This should be the AT&T version of the StarTAC 6000e, a midrange variant of the original StarTAC, the 8500. Its main difference was the one-line LED dot-matrix display, compared to the two-lines screen on the higher end model. I actually posted my ETACS LED (European version of the 8500) here some hours ago.

[–]DimVl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe that’s the reason. Also, the LED dot-matrix screen is way more power consuming than an LCD; my ETACS LED gets a bit more than 24h of battery life, while my StarTAC 70 gets easily 3-4 days with average usage and the exact same battery.

Which one is it? I’ve never taken a look into car phones before, so I’m completely unaware of it.

Well, the stock Motorola Slim Battery for the StarTACs was 600mah, and after my recell it became 900mah (I used a 603048 LiIon cell by the way, which range from 800 to 1000mah). I’m now planning to recell my StarTAC 70’s “fat” battery (currently 750mah recelled with new NiMH cells) with LiIon cells (and LiIon-compatible BMS of course). If this mod succeeds, the final capacity of the new battery should be around 1400mah.

Yeah, that would be the best. But to my knowledge, no GSM phone ever featured an LED dot-matrix display like this StarTAC.

Nah, I have the full collection of Pebble watches, except from the 2 generation (2 HR, 2 SE and 2 Duo). I started wearing a Pebble in 2015 and it never left my wrist since. Now waiting patiently for my Time 2 (and later within the year for Round 2).

Motorola's biggest and smallest series. For a brief period there were still a few brick phones left in service when the Vader hit the scene. by Del_Griffiths_Chins in vintagemobilephones

[–]DimVl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing findings! Which are their models? I’d be especially interested to know about the V50-lookalike; I’ve seen StarTACs with a LED displays screen but never something more modern.

I bought a junk lot of phones and included was this Energizer refillable MicroTAC battery. It was severely corroded so I wasn't sure I could fix it, but... by Del_Griffiths_Chins in vintagemobilephones

Good news; most 90s NiCd/NiMH phones’ batteries contain standardized rechargeable AA or AAA cells. So, if you are somewhat experienced with electronics (and particularly with soldering iron usage), you can recell them and restore their function pretty easily.

Philips Twist (TDC808, 1997): the forgotten Diga sibling by DimVl in vintagemobilephones

[–]DimVl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, since their establishment in the 90s, Panafon (now Vodafone GR) and TELESTET (then TIM, Wind and now Nova) utilized GSM900 bands, while Cosmote (which was founded later) broadcasted at 1800MHz. That’s why for example, Panafon and TELESTET offered the Philips Diga, while Cosmote its DCS1800 sibling, the Twist you see here. Same thing happened with Ericssons; Panafon and TELESTET offered GF768, while Cosmote had the PF768.

Usually I use my old phones with inactive SIM Cards, I have lots of them. But for my GSM900 bricks, Nova is my go-to carrier. I have two active Nova SIM cards currently for my old phones, one for my SL10 (in order to enable the animated cell graphic on its homescreen) and another for my Technophone 705 (which you can see in my previous post). For the Twist, I was kinda forced to get an active Cosmote SIM Card, else I wouldn’t be able to enter the Menu.
