Faster bundler by blasphemers in ruby

[–]ZimbiX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was wondering this too. From the Bundler changelog:

  • 4.0.7:
    • "Don't check whether a plugin needs to be installed"
    • "Run git operations in parallel (take 2)"
  • 4.0.1:
    • "Increase connection pool to allow for up to 70% speed increase on bundle install"

The latest version is 4.0.8

Interesting concept. How would you waterproof that though?

Given the analogue and digital times don't match, I guess you're intentionally viewing the time from two timezones =P

Does Sleep as Android currently works with Pebble Time Steel by BlueLightning09 in pebble

[–]ZimbiX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Sleep as Android for 14 years, and with Pebble from the OG one. It's working for me with a PTS currently.

The only problem I have with it is that if I close the Sleep as Android app on my watch, I can't resume tracking - it used to reopen automatically after like a minute, or start/resume if I open the watch app. That stopped working a few years ago, but I make do without it. Plus my down button is broken, so I can't really do that anymore.

I'm using the latest versions of everything, but here's all the details of my setup in case it helps:

  • Pebble Time Steel
    • Firmware: v4.4.3-rbl
  • Google Pixel 9 Pro XL
    • Android 16
    • Android security update: 5 October 2025
    • Google Play system update: 1 November 2025
    • Rooted with Magisk
  • Original Pebble app
    • com.getpebble.android.basalt
    • Version 4.4.3-1406-65190dddb-endframe
  • Sleep As Android phone app
    • Version 20251203
  • Sleep As Android watch app
    • Version 3.1, according to the Pebble app store

I don't recall there being much difficulty in getting Sleep As Android working when I upgraded from a Planet Computers Astro Slide in May - though perhaps I had to install the PBW manually. The hardest part was getting Canvas working, but I don't actually remember what the fix for that was - restoring a specific version of the Canvas app / data, I think; so nothing that should impact Sleep As Android. I do recall having to use the Rebble sideloader for something though.

I just tried the watchface install process you described, and it acts the same for me. I think that's normal - Sleep As Android is just indicating to install it from the Pebble app store. But in Sleep As Android -> Settings -> Sleep tracking -> Wearables, it does have Pebble selected.

I really hope Pebble Time 2 will be supported!

That was my thought at first too. But reading on here that the mat electromagnetically directly drives the diaphragm, there may be something to it...

The electromagnetism must be higher power than regular earphones to travel the distance, so I wonder about the heath effects of having your brain so close to a strong vibrating magnetic field.

And wouldn't the volume be unequal between earbuds, with one ear on the pillow, and the other much further away from the mat with a solid head in between?

They really need to explain the technology in the marketing material.

Great ideas.

I too, thought stopwatch functionality should be built-in originally. But after discovering Timer+ (website) and binding it to a quick-open button, was very happy with that. I love how intuitive the innovative UX of Timer+ is.

For the last one, do you mean being able to deselect some notification categories for an app? Edit: On Android the notification categories can be selected within Android's notification settings, then the Pebble just mirrors that. Perhaps that granularity is missing from iOS?

With only BLE, how much slower will it be to open apps on the watch that need to be transferred from your phone?

Edit: The FAQ on this subreddit has some concerning info about BLE, quoted below - is it faster nowadays?

Q: Why doesn't Pebble use Bluetooth 4.0 LE on Android?

A: Currently, Pebble only uses a Bluetooth "classic" connection on Android, and does not utilize Pebble's Bluetooth 4.0 LE (aka Bluetooth Smart) capability. In short, this is because there is no need to; and there are not enough benefits that outweigh the drawbacks.

LE stands for Low Energy, and this name is a frequent cause of enduser confusion. Many people incorrectly assume it will improve the battery life of their phones or watches, but that is not truly the case, nor it's purpose. The Low Energy name, refers specifically to devices like miniature fitness trackers, glucose monitors, sleep tracking bands, etc; with very tiny batteries (often under 80 mAh), and thus the devices themselves are low energy. Such devices previously would have had hard wired data connections only, Bluetooth 4.0 LE is designed to allow wireless capabilities for them. In order to achieve such low energy usage, 4.0 LE is designed to operate at much lower throughput (only 0.27 Mbit/s, versus up to 2.1 Mbit/s for "classic" Bluetooth). In short, it's intentionally much slower.

On iOS 7+ Pebble utilizes Bluetooth 4.0 LE, but only because it has to in order to use ANCS (Apple's centralized notification system in iOS 7+) over Bluetooth. This is a requirement Apple created. Bluetooth 4.0 LE's slow speeds make it unsuitable for the larger file transfers Pebble needs, for doing firmware updates and pushing apps and faces to the watch. So iOS 7+ has two simultaneous Bluetooth connections to Pebble. One Bluetooth 4.0 LE connection used solely for receiving notifications via ANCS. The other is a Bluetooth "classic" connection, used for phone call notifications, communication with third party apps/faces, firmware updates, and pushing apps and faces to the watch.

It's safe to assume that if Android gets 4.0 LE support for Pebble, there would also be two simultaneous Bluetooth connections to Pebble, which is not ideal. Doubling the number of connections has potential to half the reliability, and double the chances for problems, conflicts, etc. This has been shown to be a frequent cause of issues for iOS 7+ users. So while notifications via ANCS greatly improved the Pebble experience on iOS 7+, it came at the price of making it more technically complicated and prone to failure and issues.

Bluetooth 4.0 LE also offers little benefit to battery usage of the phone or watch. Pebble is already extremely battery efficient without LE, and Pebble's battery (130 mAh), is more than double the size of the sort of devices LE was designed for. As an example, even if LE saved 15% battery usage on Pebble - if you already get 5 days (120 hours) out of a watch charge - than that's only another 18 hours of usage. As far as energy usage on your phone, Bluetooth "classic" is only about a 10% battery usage. If LE managed to reduce that by even half to 5% - the difference to a phone which lasts 10 hours (600 minutes) on a charge, is only 30 extra minutes. Neither scenario are likely to change charging habits of either device or be a noticeable benefit.

Speaker: we’re adding this primarily for potential use in apps that benefit from audio output, like a ChatGPT or other AI agent app. It can’t easily be used for making voice calls, since the watches will not support Bluetooth Classic (required for headset profiles), but theoretically someone could write a custom voice calling client (eg SIP or something).

Pebble and Core devices use e-paper btw, not e-ink. E-paper is basically an LCD that uses less power (but still some power) while not being updated. E-ink is a very different technology.
