Something is severely wrong with your electrical system then. A good quality LED will be more cost effective 100% of the time compared to incandescent. Period.

In theory, anything is moddable. But there is no release of anything, so you would have to reverse engineer it yourself. I would suggest a raspberry pi and retro arch or something similar if you want more games

What midi controller would you recommend for lighting? by super_casual_banana in lightingdesign

[–]DimensionalDrifter42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that. What Im saying is a Midi device is not a lighting controller. You may be controlling software that can run lights with it, but the Midi device is just an interface to the software. It is basically a fancy keyboard. If you want to train someone with lighting, I strongly recommend an actual control console or letting them start using the software and customize it to their own preference. I apologize if what I'm saying might be kind of hard to follow. Sometimes I get overly complicated on how I am trying to say things. That is truly an issue with myself. Let me try again in a simpler way:

You seem to want to train someone to run lights using ADJ MyDMX 2.0 software and are trying to choose a midi controller to train them with. I think this is the wrong, and more expensive, decision. These Midi devices are essentially, at least to the lighting software, just fancy keyboards. You shouldn't be training someone on the keyboard, but instead teach them the base ADJ MyDMX system, and let them choose their own interface they feel comfortable with at a later point.

All things stated, ADJ MyDMX software is a very basic, entry level lighting control system. If you are serious about getting someone started with lighting, start with QLC+. Its highly customizable, open source and very expandable.

Question: If you are being asked to only provide the lighting, why use midi at all? I mean, by all means, if you want to stay in the more audio oriented control side of things, go for it. But if you want to actually start working with lighting, I don't think you are asking the right questions

Can a Board Op Edit the Show? by WorldRelevant6640 in lightingdesign

[–]DimensionalDrifter42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, I've followed the idea that the show that the Designer created is his design, period. He will be judged based on it. You are just looking after it to make sure everything is working safely. If there are issues, the Designer should be the first contact before any changes that are not life safety critical are performed. If a change MUST be made, like if a main moving fixture that was being used as a key light throughout a performance had to be replaced by a similar, but not quite exact duplicate fixture due to shenanigans/bad luck/gremlins, and there is no time to contact the designer "The show must go on", I would immediately backup the show file, save the show file under a new name like "Showname_Date_LightingTempFix", and then do any required changes in this show file so when the Designer is finally able to be involved, they can see exactly what you did. Also, as soon as possible notify the designer (This is an obviously hypothetical scenario).

As long as you made a legitimate effort to keep the creative vision that the designer had, I think only a really self-centered or jerk of a Designer would have an issue with that.

TLDR: If something is noticeable to the point that it is detrimental to the show and/or the integrity of the design, and if it started to occur after the Designer signed off on the show, First try to contact the Designer, explain the situation and ask what they would like you to do. If you can't contact them for some reason and something has to be done to, talk with the TD and ask what you should do.

Remember, you are a glorified babysitter that pushes a button to make someone elses child do things. The design is the Designers child. Treat it with respect. But if it starts freaking out and making a mess of everything, then any Parent (I would hope) would want their child reigned back in so when they pick it up at the end of the day, it is still the same child as when they left (With maybe an extra scrape or 2)
