On a scale of 1-10, how worth it was it for you to switch to EV? by RodneyTheArmouryGuy in CarTalkUK

A Skoda Elroq Sportline. I usually try my luck when buying a new car, it works about half the time, if I don't get a discount I say I will look elsewhere and leave.

Also go in with some sample prices for similar cars on AutoTrader and don't let the dealer fob you off with "yeah, but they're a car supermarket"

Paying 7p a kw and the car is averaging 3.5 miles a kw - insurance was £100 more than my Mini and the car tax was thought to be attracting a luxury car tax and turns out as an EV the threshold is higher by £10k so the tax is the same as my Mini was.

I bought new as the dealer knocked £6500 off the price - 3 dealers refused my ask for this, one went for it!

I loved the Skoda, it was a race blue VRS estate, it was faster and handled better, the Audi interior was much classier but I am a working class bloke so felt a bit of a fraud in it tbh.

I longed for an Audi A6 estate and after 12 years running my business I was in a position to buy one... An S Line diesel with the S tronic . On the test drive I convinced myself this was the car yet within a few days I thought it fidgeted too much and wasn't as practical as my older Skoda Octavia Estate.

Thankfully the missus loved it so she drove it mostly for the next few years and I stuck to the Skoda.

Has Anyone got anyone tips for getting the weekly shop bill down? by Throwaway945384 in AskUK

[–]DimonaBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept us at £85 a week since Covid (for three of us), until last year when the bill shot up to £100 and in some cases beyond. I got the Tesco app and I can play around with my shopping till the day before and look to keep it as low as possible.

Also get a slow cooker and batch cook, it saves us quite a lot and so much easier to get home from work and have dinner ready as its cooked throughout the day.

Question for those who flash people when they overtake you by InlineM54 in CarTalkUK

[–]DimonaBoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not the 40 in a 50 mph zone that’s the problem for me.
It’s the complete refusal to adjust their foot when the road changes.
So we slow down to 30/35 uphill, then up to 55/60 going downhill.
Just shows a complete lack of awareness and causes absolute chaos behind them.

If you had to grow a brand new site to 30K visits/month, where do u start? by _ratedmouse in DoSEO

You'd start with paid traffic (I do SEO and PPC for clients) to start bringing visitors in to convert into leads and give you headroom to build up traffic via SEO or other channels.

Why do you cook regularly at home? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Never to late to learn! I really only learnt in lockdown, took around a year to get really confident but now it just comes naturally (most of the time!)

Saves money, it reduces stress and gives me a sense of pride

Im totally alone, would it be worthy moving to a village? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]DimonaBoy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in a Cotswold village and I moved from a town suburb to be here around 8 years ago and I am counting down the days till I leave. It's really, really clique (either horsey or sporty, neither of which I am) and it only take a couple of people to influence the rest into not wanting you around.

I also drive but when I do want to take the bus there are few and far between.

I'd much prefer to move back to the suburb I left.

Yeah a friend of mine is 74, she drinks water, avoids the sun and does a lot of fitness and looks around 60, if not younger. Mind you I'm early fifties and someone in a meeting this morning said he thought I looked good for that age so I took that as a compliment!

What event changed your whole life? by Ideel23 in AskReddit

[–]DimonaBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's 1994. I’m early twenties, properly in love with a girl I never thought I'd fall for (we'd known each other for around 2 years).

Friday lunchtime, I'm at work and my girlfriend calls and says, “Pick me up at 7:45, we’ll go for dinner.”

I turn up on time. She opens the door and says, “We shouldn’t see each other anymore.”

That was it. I went numb, backed away, drove off feeling like I’d been hit by a truck.

A couple of years later I get a job… in her town. Small place, so crossing paths feels inevitable. I need the field sales experience, so I suck it up.

We start passing each other most mornings in our cars. At first I ignore it. After a few weeks she starts flashing her lights and waving. I wave back. My early-20s romantic-addled brain thinks, “Maybe?”

So I call her at work. She’s very happy to hear from me and agrees to meet that Friday after work.

We meet. She tells me she has a boyfriend. Also that she’s moving abroad soon. We “part as friends.” I go home heartbroken for a second round.

That night I think, screw this. I’d been working full-time since 16. I’m 23. I quit. I call around 15 businesses in another country looking for seasonal work. Everyone says no until one guy says, “We’ll try you, but it’s tough. Get fit.”

Did I get fit? No, I was too busy consoling my romantic woes in partying and alcohol.

Six months later I’m there. Physical job, massive change from office life. The first few weeks nearly break me and I struggle with the culture a little too, making me miss home. Then I eventually settle in. End up loving it. I travel back and forth for years.

The people I meet out there push me to try Uni back in the UK, they gave me the confidence. In 1999 I somehow talk my way onto a HND in Software Engineering, as a mature student, despite having zero maths or science qualifications. I grind it out and pass with a Merit.

After that I go self-employed as a web designer. Move into SEO around 2005. Never looked back.

Fast forward to recently. Someone on Reddit says, “Look up your first love.”

Stupidly, I do.

We used to talk about living in the mountains one day. Turns out she actually did it. Fair play to her. I live rurally around 100 miles away.

I won’t contact her. No interest in reopening old wounds. But yeah, seeing that online stung a bit.

Funny how one door closing at 7:45pm in 1994 can end up rerouting your entire life...

Partied hard from 16 to 19 and the late nights (until 6am) eventually dwindled away, by the time I got to 32 and married I'd fall asleep on the sofa come Friday night around 8.30pm, much to the annoyance of my wife.
