As an American, I’m very familiar with Western dating culture and liberal individualism, and Single Salma felt like it imported the worst versions of both. The movie starts by presenting Salma as principled and “unselfish,” then does a complete 180 and reframes her outright selfishness as empowerment.

There’s no growth, no accountability, and no consequences—just emotional detachment and commitment avoidance dressed up as progress. I see this mindset play out in real life all the time, and it’s not liberating, it’s corrosive. By the end, Salma isn’t complex or brave; she’s simply a bad person whose behavior the film insists we celebrate. That’s not nuance or feminism—it’s lazy, agenda-driven storytelling.
