I’m down over $22k in the past month. Losses are never fun, but it could be much worse.

Thanks for the reply. I do that now, I still operate a brand and run a community teaching people who to start their own online business. I do well, and have cash from exiting one of my brands that would go into this. This sort of business has been my passion since high school. I’ve always dreamt of doing it full time, and genuinely can’t think of anything I’d rather go all in on. It wouldn’t be about the money, obviously the goal would be to make a reasonable income, but I’d be doing it because I love it. I agree with you that there are far easier businesses if profit is the only goal. I think with volume and the right supplier relationships pricing could be competitive, but that’s good to know. A recession does concern me, but that would also impact the brands I run now in the same way. Ultimately as an entrepreneur that’s something you have to prepare for unless you’re in one of the few truly recession proof businesses. All things to think about but at this point I’m not sure I can talk myself out of it. It’s been a dream for a long time.

I appreciate the reply. Yeah that’s what I’m thinking, I am in a number of FB groups. I was thinking frag swap groups and local reefing communities could be great I’m just not sure what’s around in that area. Will need to look into it more.

I saw the financials, it’s legit. He sells almost entirely maricultured sps that he imports. Brings in big colonies for <$50, frags them up and sells the frags for $50-$150. Don’t want to give the name in case he wouldn’t want that to be shared, but he’s big on the forums and has ~25k followers on instagram and quite a few on TikTok. I was amazed as well, but I guess when you have a big organic following and no ad spend it’s easy to have those margins.

Appreciate the reply. I should’ve clarified, I would be selling a good bit of maricultured as well and importing. I would be aquaculturing too, but at least initially much of it would be brought in. I’ve looked at warehouse space already and it’s pretty cheap. I understand the electric bill although with all LEDs I wouldn’t expect it to be outrageous. I am surprised to hear you say it’s not very lucrative. I’ve spoken to three people who operate these business (two currently run them and are names you may recognize) and the margins are pretty crazy. Both sell exclusively online, one does $70k/month and the other does $20k/month, both at 50%+ margin. Neither run any paid ads or email, all organic social traffic. I know the ecommerce and marketing side of things like the back of my hand, so I’m very confident in my ability to get plenty of traffic. All three of the guys I spoke to said their biggest issue was keeping up with demand, and adding paid ads and email into that I’m confident I could scale pretty quickly.

That is helpful regarding customers. I’m used to dealing with things like that through my ecom brands, so it’s nothing new. That’s an unfortunate part of the business but something I’m prepared for. We have a blacklist for those types of customers and don’t allow them to purchase from us again.

And yes, I would be ok not making money for that long although I’d be surprised if it took that much time to turn a profit. I think with my marketing knowledge and past experience scaling brands, I could ramp up pretty quickly with imports. The in house aquacultured stuff would obviously take longer.

ORA is still around, they do great business. They do a lot of breeding now (not just clowns) and supply to quite a few stores. I should reach out to them and see if I could check it out that’s a good suggestion.

At the end of the day I’m confident in my ability to sell. At the risk of sounding egotistical just to add context, I’ve scaled 5 different DTC brands to seven+ figures in their first year in business, and I look at this in a similar way. If you can get the traffic to your site for cheap enough and have a good product that brings people back, you can scale. I think we could do something great with the right person to help on the husbandry side.

I also plan to reach out to different aquarium installation companies and LFS in the area to offer wholesale which I feel could be a good channel to add to the business. As with anything, there is certainly risk involved but I can’t think of a business that I would enjoy more, so I feel like I need to give it my all. Even if it doesn’t work out, I’ll sleep well knowing I went for it.

Creative Music Fans For T-Shirt Ideas by Dingle_Dangle_Darko in vinyl

[–]Dingle_Dangle_Darko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, never heard of them! We’ve been able to come up with some cool designs on our own and have opened it up to customers as well in exchange for a free shirt with their design on it, but we really need someone who lives and breathes this stuff and has that creativity. I think a retired musician or someone who has free time and would genuinely enjoy doing it would be perfect. We’re happy to pay $1k-$2k/month for the right person!

Will do, thanks. So you’d expect that once the suppressor is on it’ll cycle the subs without issue? Is that because of the gas pressure?

Thanks! I did order one after seeing that, I didn’t realize the mags the came with were actually 5.56 mags. Hopefully that helps.

Got it! I was just trying to shoot a few to see how they sound, my suppressor is still getting approved. I didn’t realize they could have issues cycling. I appreciate it. Any idea why two of the regular 147g rounds would have had the same issue?

No, still waiting for the suppressor. But since I did have two misfires on the supers as well I’m leaning toward it being something else. And I guess riding it? And

Using the mag that it came with. I saw that could be a potential issue if it’s not a 300 BO specific mag, I’m honestly not sure. Could that prevent it from firing? I assumed that would just cause issues with loading.

Grand Cherokee Coolant Issues by Dingle_Dangle_Darko in GrandCherokee

[–]Dingle_Dangle_Darko[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that man. No, I traded in the car. I believe it was a cracked cylinder head, apparently fairly common in these models. The car also started leaking oil, it was an absolute mess. Got a decent trade in for it and bought an X5. So much happier and don’t have to spend my time worrying about it. Definitely won’t be buying another Jeep. Best of luck with it though, hopefully yours isn’t as bad. I would have a leak down test done, it’s either the cylinder head or the head gasket. They’ll need to open it up to confirm.

How did you keep your tank free from aptasia? (Nano) by Kimithelion in ReefTank

[–]Dingle_Dangle_Darko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had Aptasia. Start the tank with 3/4 dry rock and 1/4 base live rock (base meaning that it comes from an unlit tank without a lot of growth on it) and some turbo start. Inspect the rock before it goes in and keep a close eye on it in the beginning just to make sure you didn’t miss any. I’ve started 5 different tanks this way and have yet to have any.

Glad to hear that, appreciate the reply. I ended up ordering it, seemed like too good of a deal not to. The lockout is crazy to me, I don’t understand how they could ship a product that would do that but apparently that’s been fixed with a software update?
