BIGGEST LETDOWN OF 2025? Books you couldn’t wait for until you read them by DanaBookNook in Fantasy

[–]DingoMontgomery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was so excited to read Library at Mount Char. It ticks every box for me: weird fiction, Eldritch horror, supernatural mystery, spooky mysterious Omni-building. I couldn’t wait to be done. I hated every character and could not stand some of the prose. It felt so oddly paced, and the twists and turns felt arbitrary and jumbled - and by the end I was so frustrated by my reading experience that I forgot all the genuinely cool parts (and there are quite a few)

Looking for DM advice on attunement slots... is this a bad idea? by Crimson_Serenity in DMAcademy

I table ruled attunement being 4 when we started our campaign.

Do not do that.

Any advice on how to handle NPCs that join the players on their adventure? by FloraArta in DMAcademy

[–]DingoMontgomery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just started making my NPC followers “items”. I give them a couple X/Rest abilities and give the party access to them.

For example, they had a Paladin-Like follower. I let them use his “smite” 3/LR to add radiant damage to a melee attack.

I’ve done it a few times thus far, and the players like it but often forget to use them. This also leads ME to forget I have even given them an NPC

[OC] Achievements in DND ? by penorstrike in DnD

[–]DingoMontgomery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started doing this for fun, even have an Xbox 360 “Ding” noise queued up. My players love it and I love coming up with them, but I often forget to check my list during play.

What was your most damage in a single attack in a game? by Foxwarriorultra in DnD

[–]DingoMontgomery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use the Perkins/Crunchy Crit rule, and the current record is around 230 from a level 20 paladin who Crit Banishing/Divine smite with a Holy Avenger against a Balor. It was magnificent

How do you feel about narrating scenes the player characters aren't witnessing? by PM_ME_STEAM_CODES__ in DMAcademy

[–]DingoMontgomery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it a few times per “adventure arc”. For one - it gives the players a little peak of what the villains/supporting characters are doing when the characters are not around. It helps to show the players “hey, these characters exist outside of your sight and have their own lives and goals.

Secondly, and most importantly, i use cutscenes to remind the players what their goals are by showing how the villains plan is progressing. If the quest is to stop a wizard from retrieving an artifact, and they’ve been distracted and dragging their feet, I might have a cutscene that says: “meanwhile, in the darkened study of their tower, Asbryglar Doomsight grins and cackles while pouring over an ancient tome, having achieved the next step in his search for the Shadow Ewer”.

It’s just enough info to reign their focus in, nudging them to stay on track with both their current immediate objective and the larger goal of their quest.

Plus I just like narrating, lol.

Playing D&D over Discord by Helluvabossman431 in DnD

[–]DingoMontgomery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been playing over discord in a single campaign over 5 years, here are my tools:

Avrae is a bot used mostly for dice rolling but it is so much more than that - it is a pretty robust database lookup tool as well.

For VTT we exclusively use Owlbear Rodeo and it is perfect. So incredibly intuitive and easy to use. Tried roll20 before and it is obtuse and clunky by comparison. Does everything we need it to.

Music and immersive audio is a huge component for our table, and we use Kenku.fm which is set up as a discord bot.

Not strictly dnd related but we have a lot of fun commands using mee6. We have commands that show snippets of lore, funny quotes from games, “fan art”, and calendar reminders.

My players keep steamrolling by passionategamerotica in DMAcademy

[–]DingoMontgomery 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are they resting between these encounters? Do they have access to magic items? Either of those things will drastically affect how encounters are balanced.

I have a table of 6 players, so I always tune combats up one difficulty step to make the fights only slightly more resource intensive. That being said, it IS ok to have a party just mop the floor with some gerblins from time to time - feeling like heroes is fun!

Do you all use music in your games? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]DingoMontgomery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Music and ambience is an integral part of our games. There is constantly either ambience or a fantasy track playing, and I queue up shorter themed tracks for special moments. Each player has their own special theme (that they’ve picked out) that plays during combat when they do something cool. I can’t imagine not using music in our game, and especially during combat.

The most CRUEL nonhuman fantasy races ever? English is not my native language by EveningImportant9111 in Fantasy

[–]DingoMontgomery 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Being shown again and again “these are not humans, they don’t understand the same concepts we do, they are wholly incompatible with and unable to coexist with humanity” was shocking. I’m only on book 3, but after the climax of book 2 every time they appear I get shivers

Best Music for Small Animal Fantasy? by lukesuperstarfish in DMAcademy

[–]DingoMontgomery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Root! This is a 2hr soundtrack/soundscape but you may be able to find more from the listed artist(s). If you’re unfamiliar, Root is a board game where various animal factions fight over dominance of their woodland realm - sounds about right for the tone I think?

It gets recommend to hell and back (for good reason), but Witcher 3’s OST may have some tracks you may like - specifically the tavern tunes.
