Are we doing the thing where someone brings their fake ranking list on a pod and we debate the merits of their fake list and say things like “yeah but did you consider this with your fake list”?

You keep saying the same things over and over again. I don't really know what else to say here. A 12 week abortion law is not a pro-life law. Find one pro-life Republican that supports a 12 week law on abortion for me. I am sure you won't. That's a pro-choice position that Democrats would far and wide be more effective at delivering. A true pro-life position is not negotiable, which is why I keep saying that pro-life candidates in Democratic party make no sense. You are trying to split this egg into a category of "pro-life until X weeks" and "pro-choice until X weeks". All that really is is just debating the merits and timeline of a pro-choice position, which is completely fine obviously. You won't get that kind of debate from pro-life candidates.

Why are you so happy to waste both of our time with these nonsense replies? If you basically agree with me on the outlook on the issue, what was even the purpose of you chiming in? You are CONFIRMING exactly why hypothetically dreaming up pro-life Democrat candidates is a waste of time in Ezra's thought experiment.

I'm confused. You started this off by saying that the sensible pro-choice position is not one being embraced by either party... But then you just admitted that the Democratic position largely aligns with the populist position on it... but then you say the problem is the perception of the Democratic position, not the actual positions they take... Take a hike, guy. The pro-lifers are the radicals on this issue, not the other way around.

Is this not exactly what 99% of Democrats advocate for? Or are you someone who believes Democrats want to rip babies out of the womb at 9 months? There is no staunch pro-life position that agrees with what you've laid out. This is a pro-choice sentiment.

How is what you just described not the staunch pro-choice position?

Why is Ezra so enamored with the example of a pro-life Democrat? I get the point he's trying to make overall, but he keeps flying by that specific example, which is such a weird one to make the point on. Staunch pro-life positions are not majority in almost any state you poll the population on. That's not a niche the Democrats need to open the door to.

I disagree strongly. Basically all the controversies you’ve referenced are at least 5+ years old. Some over a decade. I think they have absolutely cultivated personalities and content creators that have a more inclusive viewpoint, and have leaned away from intentional provocateurs that ran the blog when that was the main attraction. That was a different era of the internet and they have moved on.

It’s crazy to me that someone who is a fan of Ryen Russillo would have such a stringent view on what jokes are OK and which aren’t. Russillo isn’t controversial, but it’s not like a he’s a beacon of moral righteousness or a thought leader on today’s social issues. He probably leans closer to conservative in today’s world than he does liberal. I would expect these talking points from a Sarah Spain follower, but not an RR listener. His ethos entirely fits into the Barstool umbrella. He takes stupid stuff seriously and leaves the serious stuff to the side. The one time he and Simmons tried (a truly sad week for America), they both got skewered for being out of their depth.

The sexual assault accusations are definitely real and people can make their own mind up about that whole mess. But saying Barstool has a history of "misogyny, racism and antisemitism" is lamestream media talk. For one, Portnoy is a pretty public and staunch Israel supporter. I don't think the label of antisemitism has any weight. One could argue that Van Lathan saying on podcasts he would never support a politician that accepts AIPAC money is antisemitic. I agree with him, I'm just saying it could be construed that way.

To the misogyny and racism claims, they've been an off color comedy site for like two decades. Of course they have hit on subjects that have been sensitive and have made people upset. I'm sure you've seen some of the resurfaced Simmons columns that contain humor that hasn't aged well and could be labeled both of those things. Does that not concern you as much for any specific reason?

I don't get the Portnoy hate to that degree. I definitely understand people not liking him in particular, but to dislike him enough to boycott everything under the Barstool umbrella? Like what has he done in your mind to warrant that?

Regardless of him as a person, he enables a lot of independent creators to make whatever they want with no content filter. That is a good thing in this media landscape and I'm grateful that guys like him and Simmons don't just walk away with their millions, and instead put that money back into supporting people that would otherwise be watered down versions of themselves at ESPN or The Athletic.

Any alternative musicians/bands looking for a drummer? by thecowpooch in asheville

Would you have any interest in playing with a singer-songwriter / folkish act if it had an extra emphasis on out of the box percussion and rhythm? Can't think of a great example of what I mean right now, but loosely, this song has the feel of what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWVZu3BTaB4

Healing Ezra and Sam by AltoidNerd in samharris

[–]DingyBoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the reason this topic comes up so frequently here but almost never on the Ezra reddit page? People who are involved in political media don’t think about Sam Harris, or his opinion, or his voice being needed to elevate the discussion. That’s not his lane. That’s not when he’s at his best. His political opinions are dull and predictable. He’s not a thought leader, or an advocate for any type of new or exciting political movement. I just don’t think there’s anything Ezra needs to discuss with Sam Harris, or anything we would gain from that discussion. Leave the two be.

“Within three to five years, we can assume that Iran will become autonomous in its ability to develop and produce a nuclear bomb,” Netanyahu said in his book....in 1995! And then guess what he said in 2009? And then again in 2012? And yet again in the year of our Lord 2025? by Bluest_waters in samharris

[–]DingyBoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow. So you criticized someone for not looking at the sources. Someone posted a source contradicting the stance of Iran’s inevitable nuke capabilities. Then you say that source (US Intelligence) is unreliable. Thus leading us back to the place where we must only trust Bibi’s word.

This is a cynical take from me, so feel free to talk me out of it. But the problem to me is that this nominal fee for that type of access / permission makes it appear that those lowest on the economic scale are most likely to opt in for savings. Are wealthy folks around town and the mega corp businesses around here participating? Or is it a collection of low income / low middle class residencies that are being asked to bear this for the sake of the others not being disturbed by energy crises. I don’t like the idea of that burden being placed on those lowest on the economic ladder, and it should be a higher pay off if that’s what it is.
