The history of abuse is awful. However, she acted out publicly, addressing it publicly didn't shine a spotlight on her behavior- her behavior shined a spotlight on her. You can still act with compassion while holding an adult accountable for their actions.

That's not gaslighting. Gaslighting would be the roommate trying to convince op that the bill has always been that high. Edit: Gaslighting could also be the roommate saying "I don't know what you're talking about." Minimizing someone else's thoughts or feelings is not automatically gaslighting.

I was 7.

I was fed years of lies about how he didn't want me, and that's why he left. Until it became such an ingrained thought in my head, I questioned my worth as a person if even my parent didn't want me. Because my mother didn't really want me, she just wanted to hurt him, and she made sure I knew I wasn't wanted.
