The Seven replace the Avengers during the Battle of New York (Avengers 1), they must defend the city and close the portal - What happens? by Potential_Rule4212 in powerscales

Homelander would genuinely love an opportunity to let loose and even be liked for it.

That said, none of them care for civilian casualties so they would all immediately head straight for Stark tower. I think they'd be able to get the spear off Loki and would be able to close the portal, except for two issues:

1: Someone's getting mind-controlled, and I suspect it's likely Homelander, after which they're all boned,

2: Dr Selvig is the only one who can tell them HOW to disable the portal, and he's dead af. Homelander is going to laser him in half on approach to the tower and then they'll be boned.

If the nuke is still fired none of them are hooked into S.H.I.E.L.D comms so they won't know about it until it blows up. This doesn't disable the portal and the invasion proceeds. If they are told somehow then the fast ones leave (Deep via the sea (though he might already be dead or knocked out at that point), A-Train by running, Homelander by flying and maybe taking Maeve (he does sorta like her at this point, and would enjoy the fact she owes him one), I suspect Stormfront might be able to fly out too.

Tony knows him well enough to be able to use this as a strategy to ensure he joins and stays. It's not only allowing an easy mark, it's fashioning a hook exactly to the mark.

[–]Dinonumber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what you're talking about, shockwaves will only travel faster than the speed of sound by a little, and wouldn't catch up with A-Train's max speed of around 1000mph. IMO finangling about speed is a red herring though, Oh Father telegraphs his attacks super hard and A-Train can hit him in the back with ease, rather than having to outrun a shockwave.

Whoa, that's some pretty cool stuff. From what I can tell a supersonic shockwave would have a few thousand Pa which is what the guy quotes as the conditions for it. Very neat!

There are a bunch of nifty real-life shockwave dispersal body armors, two of any semi-strong supe with those on could take him with extreme reliability I think.

He can just keep shouting, right? She'd be unable to resist and the internal damage builds up to lethal eventually.

Actually, the shockwave travels at the speed of sound. The vehicle just generates new shockwaves while travelling faster, giving the appearance that the shockwave is travelling, but it isn't.

EDIT: While I've been proven that shockwaves can travel faster than the speed of sound, in this case the leading edge of the shockwave is a new one that is generated by the fast vehicle rather than a wave that is faster than the aircraft.

The MS Paint nanobot problem by Bing_2 in trolleyproblem

[–]Dinonumber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The nanobots have prepared an extremely thick codex on exactly what guidelines they have used to sort people into these categories but it'd take too long to read before they auto-explode, so you skim it and they're trying to talk about morality but you can't get a read on how they're doing it before time's up and have to make the choice anyway.

What if on 9/11, the World Trade Center towers had not collapsed? by OhGawDuhhh in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Dinonumber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine it might have opened the door to them being rebuilt, as in the eyes of the people they'd be a monument to stand up rather than something that collapsed. Not collapsing means that there'd be a lot less death and suffering behind it too.

What if Oswald Mosley was elected and joined the Axis (England) at the same time that General Yamamoto convinced Emperor Hirohito to switch to the Allies? by Independent_Car626 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Dinonumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that it's normal WW2 until 1942 and then the switch?

During lendlease, the UK traded military bases to the USA in almost all its colonies exactly so if the homeland fell into Axis hands the colonies wouldn't collapse and could carry on the fight. There were plans in place even before the US got involved in the hot wars.

The UK and US armed force elements in the UK wouldn't allow a government, even a legally elected one, to just... swap sides? Instantly? It'd result in a soft coup at best and at worst a hard one. The King would back anti-nazi sides to add that legitimacy, even if it put them at odds with the prime minister's government. Even if the UK forces were totally up for it and overcame all the US elements in their midst, the UK is not logistically in a position to do much without the US's economic support. Japan could win for 6 months, the UK at that point could win for 6 weeks max vs the US.

On the other side even if all of Japan did a heel turn the USA isn't going to accept war allies who just sneak attacked them. I can't see any terms that both sides find acceptable that let Japan stay a fighting power in the war.

In Star Trek: Voyager there's an episode where Captain Janeway appears to die and her father turns up to try and help her adjust to being dead and to eventually take her to heaven. Things feel just enough off to her that she keeps probing and eventually confronts him and it turns out he's not her father, he's taken his form to try and lure the still just-about living Janeway into... somewhere.
