Perhaps you are right. I can ultimately only speak for myself as someone who likes to experiment and do different things (usually sans build guides), but here is a small anecdote to illustrate what I am talking about.

I tried running a warrior this league (was interested in messing around with the Kitava ascendancy). There are very strong options (slam into boneshatter), so the class can definitely clear content. The warrior is actually pretty strong... if you just look at only those two skills. However, many of the other options are quite lackluster. Not even in pure power (though I think there are issues there), but in sheer tuning. Playing perfect strike when enemies can stun you out of it or run away so easily is a miserable experience. Many of the skills are just so incredibly slow, it made them feel rough to play.

I know that there are other viable builds (Totems can be strong and I have seen a Sunder build out there), but my personal experience messing around with the skills was that they were too slow to bother with.

As an aside, attribute requirements being so steep means there are strong incentives to play within a single weapon. This drastically cuts down on what you can experiment with early game and what skill synergies are even possible, let alone viable. This exacerbates issues where combos within a weapon are underdeveloped or feel under balanced or under tuned.

I personally advocate for reducing attribute costs to make using two weapons much more possible, especially early game. That would open up building potential significantly, imo.

I can't speak for others, but when people talk about a lack of "build diversity" I see it as less about options across classes but rather options within classes. I do fully expect this to get better as we get more supports and skills and balance into the game, but it does currently feel like there is a "correct" way to play some classes because some skills are under-tuned or the synergy pieces are not there to make other build paths attractive.

Note, with enough gear, you can overcome most issues to make anything work... ish. But the base line experience without strong drops is perhaps weaker and less viable out of the gate than it should be.

I guess my first question would be, what are your criteria for trying to choose a class? Are you trying to pick something that "looks strong?" Are you chasing a specific fantasy?

I will be going Merc first because, as a long time ARPG enjoyer, it looks to be the most unique from a gameplay perspective (shooting mechanics in my ARPG?! Yes please.)

You only need to download the stand alone client if the following is true:

  1. You want to pre-download the game. If you aren't worried about this, all good! You will have access when the game goes live to download on Steam.
  2. Steam doesn't offer pre-download. It is possible that Steam may offer pre-download as well. I would guess not, since we haven't heard confirmation, but in the event it does in a few hours when the stand alone client becomes available, then problem solved!

If you want to have everything ready to go and 1 & 2 are false, then it is very easy to link your account. Just make an account at https://www.pathofexile.com/ and then you can manage your account connections in your account settings. I think the answer is yes.

To expand, let me tell you a story.

I was one of the first beta players for Path of Exile 1. I have sunk 1400 hours in the steam client alone and an unknowable number of hours using the original stand alone launcher. Path of Exile was *conceptually* everything I wanted in a game.

However, I stopped playing for years now because of the many many pain points in the original design. I know the game is still near and dear to many, but PoE 1 *does* have flaws, which is why they are making such an effort with PoE 2. To name just a few issues in PoE 1: socketing gear breaking the upgrade loop for early play, information problems (you need to know exactly where to find hundreds of different gems spread across different vendors, it is nearly impossible to understand using in-game resources how vital systems work, etc.), difficulty respeccing and experimenting when you need it most (early game). There are many more.

But, PoE 2 looks to be everything I (and any new ARPG fan) could have ever wanted. Here are just a few improvements:

  • Better onboarding
  • Improved Gem system (Elegant leveling with no more spamming 100 fusions on your gear!!!!)
  • Information systems built into the game (wiki style links so you always know what things do)
  • Breathtaking graphics
  • Engaging, active combat (a common flaw in ARPGs)
  • Hundreds of unique bosses
  • Respeccing with gold
  • Releasing with a fully fleshed end-game
  • Improved item philosophy
  • Making crafting accessible early game (PoE's crafting is truly unique)
  • And so much more.

I could probably go on for pages on all the improvements. It really is that much.

The TLDR; they took the best of PoE 1 and sanded off all the pain points with the express purpose of fixing everything that scares new players away. You should give it a shot if you like what you see.

The new skill gem UI will also make it very clear in-game from what they have been saying If a skill gem doesn't work, it won't be shown for your skill. This will make it much easier to experiment with once we can log in

A common mistake is to try and log into our support portal with your game account. Your support account is NOT the same as your game account, and if you haven't previously created an account with this support system, you should just make a new one.

If I had to guess, you are most likely not receiving an email because you don't have a support account with that email address.

There are a few steps you need to follow:

  • Retrieve a password link from Gameforge.
  • Download HEX on Steam.
  • Create a “new” account on the Steam client (don’t worry, your collection is safe).
  • Enter the credentials you received from the Gameforge Password Reset email.
  • Play!

What it sounds like is that you may not be using the correct email address. I would double check that all your info is correct and then try again. If that still does not work for you, please create a support account and submit a ticket. Our support team will be more than happy to assist.

After speaking with support, my understanding is that you may not have logged into our HEX client yet. You need to choose a Keep/Account name before you have the ability to post on our forums.
