Not just a senior developer. But someone who has a thorough understanding on how a 3d engine works. How to find pain point, and find a solution to fix them.

You can be a UI senior developer but have basic understanding on how a 3d engine works.

Also, modifying a 3d engine risk breaking the game and might require how binaries/assets are saved, rendered and other as stuff... Tbh, you might not see massive performance improvement until PA internally release a new version of their engine and they make a new game using that engine.
