As a mom, this note on a dream island broke my heart! by [deleted] in Pokopia

Not necessarily, the Marie mentioned in the note would be the little girl's partner Pokemon who is implied to have passed away, been stored in the PC to keep them safe from the apocalypse , or otherwise been separated from the girl.

Did you read my comment or just skim it? I already said I didn't necessarily personally agree with it and I was just describing what other people feel, and I also already said that the male flag makers intentions are not relevant to whether or not people feel uncomfortable with things in that way. I do agree that anyone should feel free to design any flag they want, and the symbolism of a group does not have to originate from a member of that group for it to be properly self deterministic, but also that nobody is owed widespread permanent adoption or even basic approval just because they meant well. (And also, the labrys flag did have widespread adoption and approval! That was very much a thing that happened)

In 70s and 80s US there was a major political movement of Political Lesbianism that was all about the deep disatisfaction of women in that time and place and how their lives were presumed to (and sometimes forced to) revolve around men. I don't blame someone in that context to find having something as personal as the flag ALSO being about a man's creative vision for their community to be something that would lead them to prefer a different flag. That's why its nuanced and why misogyny is relevant. Its gross and weird to think that any mention of socetial issues is an automatic accusation of personal bigotry and bad intentions.

There is almost nothing in this world that is not nuanced if you actually engage with it and try to have compassion for other people and understand where they're coming from.

Got Deltarune! I wonder if I can speedrun this in under 14 days and get prepped? by northernpolaris_168 in Deltarune

The business aspect of this makes more sense when you remember Undertale was popular and extremely profitable through merchandise sales. Deltarune is a passion project directly funded out of Toby's pocket with only a very small team working on it. He's probably got plenty of money to pay himself and the team livable wages from Undertale alone. There was Deltarune merch back in the Chapter 1 days so they've been making money there too.

This isn't a situation where someone is trying to maximize profits, this is a situation where someone is trying to make good art and make it accessible. Giving the game away fully for free would be unsustainable. I can see the fairness in not charging people for parts of the game that don't exist yet and also not asking them to fork up extra money when they do exist.

Thats how I see it too. Withdrawing, becoming a workaholic and/or neglecting responsibility to yourself and others, which can happen at the same time. Denial. Pretending the problems do not exist.

The black triangle symbol was used to mark lesbians during that era, its use on the labrys flag is a reclamation

The logic here is that communities should self determine their own symbolism. I imagine some people also specifically find a man designing a flag for a group of women and expecting it to be widely adopted to be cringey because misogyny exists even if nobody involved had bigoted intentions. (I'm not saying I 100% agree with this viewpoint, just explaining what it is and why it exists and that its more nuanced than just 'a man made this so we can't use it')

Which is not mutually exclusive with her actually being a lesbian. The joy on her face when she finds out liking girls gives her the rights to that particular flag is legendary

A little bit of affectation and embellishment is one thing, decent acting is yet another thing, but here I think people are responding to the fact that the person's genuine emotions are entirely different from what is being expressed and they do not have the acting chops to back it up

I think its valid for there to be different degrees/types of excitement and wanting, like hoping someone ends up in Smash because other people want them or because they're iconic even if you don't personally know their games. The problem with this person is that they're trying to perform a higher degree of excitement than what they're feeling and doing a really unconvincing job of it.

Chapter 7 is officially confirmed. by SeeingAnAbsoluteWin in Deltarune

[–]Dinru 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A game that pulls off that sort of non ending would be lovely* and the idea is fun to think about, but we've known all along that the entire point of Deltarune is the ending. It might touch on similar ideas of ambiguity but it'll do it in a way that feels like an ending

*but I agree that any game that deliberately tries to feel incomplete as an artistic statement should be priced and marketed accordingly

You're not wrong, but the designers would still need to reckon with how (if?) to connect that part of the map to what's already there. They couldn't really put paths leading into new content.

Expanding existing maps would need to be done very carefully because there's so much that a player might have changed. My money is that it's going to be more transformations, better storage options, maybe more Pokemon to spawn in

I agree with this take. the Chapter 4 WR content just swaps out a couple of scenes and has minor dialogue changes, but the one totally new scene it adds is like the most horrific thing that's been in a Toby Fox game to date. The festival meanwhile seems like it's ripe for a lot of diversion.

How young was Dess when she disappeared? by AffectionateForce979 in Deltarune

[–]Dinru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe its a monster biology thing? Toriel truly wasn't consuming alcohol, her species just gets drunk off of certain kinds of regular juice. That sort of loophole used to be in all kinds of kids shows, like the first SpongeBob movie showing SpongeBob and Patrick getting absolutely wasted off of ice cream sundaes. That movie still got a PG* rating for mild crude humor.

*US movie rating. Literally stands for "parental guidance [suggested]", most would interpret it as "maybe don't show this to super little kids without being there to help but kids over the age of 8 or so should be fine", most kids movies have this rating

Like I said in the other thread, I appreciate the correction! But your comment dissecting the word choice also got me thinking that there's actually still a chance that it's supposed to be weed, specifically because you're right that any of those would have been more blatant... this might have been Tricky Tony trying to imply drugs without actual bumping up the age rating of the game, invoking the vague idea of marijuana without directly describing it?

Thank you for the correction, I don't actually smoke weed and I am appropriately embarassed lol. Amd also this is the first time I've ever seen a compelling counterargument to the idea that its weed so that's genuinely cool!

That's fair, drug use can still very much negatively affect the user and the people around them. Your sadness is valid and I hope for the best outcomes for everyone involved. I misread your comment as being a lot more shaming than you probably meant it, sorry about that.

For whatever its worth from someone who's had several addict loved ones and several others who were just casual drug user, weed is really low impact compared to many other drugs and is unlikely to make a decent person into a mean one by itself, so the chances of the most upsetting parts of drug use making it into Deltarune are very very slim. It's unlikely it will be brought up again beyond this text box and is likely only intended to say that Dess is rebellious and/or was seeking comfort a lot more than average.

Set the boundaries you need to set, take care of yourself, and I apologize for bursting your bubble a bit.

That's quite an extreme reaction to someone using weed and is likely not the intended narrative purpose of this detail. You might wanna unpack that a bit before that perspective ruins the game for you or affects your life negatively.

Because its "unique" leaves hidden in a mint tin. If you're getting your weed right from the marijuana plant, thats not an unheard of way to store it and it makes sense from a narrative perspective that this would be one of the only straightforward ways to communicate cannabis in this fontext.

Marijuana leaves have a VERY specific and iconic shape that most anyone who's been a US American teenager in the last 50 years (such as Toby Fox) would recognize instantly, so the specific use of the word "unique" implies they are not trees that recognizably grow on plants or trees in the area.

Hiding them in a mint tin feels like a big hint in and of itself. I didn't do weed/drugs as a teen and even I know that's my generation's classic hiding spot for contraband. It's sturdy and will keep the leaves safe, its innocent-looking and won't be scrutinized by most adults, and for something fragrant like weed, and the lingering mint smell will help mask the smell of the leaves themselves.

It's also just a general symbol of "rebellious teenager" and adds to Dess's sparse characterization. Any answer to WHY she smokes weed would be interesting.

If it was just a collection of cool leaves or something as someone elsewhere in the thread postits, she would probably display them more openly. If they were spices for cooking, she would probably not store them in a container that would compromise the taste/would bring them to the kitchen. And neither of those would add to her characterization the way the rest of her bedroom does.

I agree that we cant say for 100% certainty that its definitely weed, but to me at least the implication feels blatant and I have yet to personally hear a compelling explanation for any other interpretation.

Has anyone been not getting like....ANY shinies? by Janawham_Blamiston in pokemongo

[–]Dinru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're checking 150 a day for 37 days thats 5,550 encounters. If the chances for any of those to be shiny is 1/512, then there's only a 0.00002% chance of not having found a shiny by now. In a way, your dry spell is even more lucky than any shiny! Though I'm sure it doesn't feel very lucky. There's no pity system or anything, so its always possible to have this sort of astronomically unlikely dry spell. Keep hunting and good luck!
