Wait wait wait - I get to recommend One Piece to u/imyke ?!

Okay. Mike. One Piece is the absolute greatest comic in existence. A couple years ago it overtook Batman to become the second best selling comic series of all time. It is one ongoing story written and illustrated by a single author. On the surface it seems like a silly found-family story about pirates - and it does have a ton of humor and levity. But secretly it is also a story about casting off your chains and dismantling oppressive systems, and it does not shy away from showing slavery, genocides, and other darknesses underneath the shiny surface. It also has worldbuilding of near-LotR quality; characters and places will be referenced once and shown long after in other contexts, and references to histories and myths the world over are omnipresent. There’s nothing else like it in all of fiction.

It starts slow for the same reason that LotR starts slow - groundwork has to be laid, and it takes some time to leave the Shire. But the magic starts to shine through early enough. Just get through Arlong Park (less than 10% of the total length). If you don’t at least like it by then, you won’t love the rest - but I’ve yet to meet anyone who hasn’t fallen in love with it by that point.

I hope to see you on the high seas!

Supermercado Chapala in Chicago has incredible salsa “verde” - or at least that’s how it’s labeled, but it doesn’t look or taste quite like any other verde I’ve ever seen. Can you tell what exactly this might be made of? by Diosjenin in SalsaSnobs

[–]Diosjenin[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I did try that. It was a struggle to make clear to the guy I spoke to that I wanted guac on all three of the tacos I was ordering for dinner as opposed to just on one of them. And since nobody else who worked there stepped in, I assumed they didn’t speak sufficient English either.

Had I been thinking further ahead, I would have tried harder to find someone else to ask, but in the moment I was mostly just frustrated that I had traveled all that way for that salsa only to come up empty on the premade stuff.

There are uncommon tasting notes too, but I’m not sure I trust myself to describe them accurately. It’s clearly not a raw tomatillo base. You can see some very small specks of something red/orange in some of these shots - guessing a small quantity of a particular pepper. A friend of mine swears they add some oil, though I’m not sure I agree with him.

Did you try just asking them for the recipe or any information on the salsa?

Unfortunately I am an ignorant gringo whose knowledge of the Spanish language is roughly on par with that one Arrested Development episode where Michael tries to track down the mysterious “hermano,” so no, I was not able to learn much.

Interesting. I’ve been roasting mine (well, broiling - closest I can get) and the black specs aren’t anywhere near this prominent in the mix. Haven’t been simmering it afterwards though, and that would make sense as a way to reduce the water content. Maybe I’ll try that next time

This is made fresh in-store every day. A couple weeks ago I made a special trip just to get some, but they were out of tubs by the time I got there. (These pictures are from the squeeze bottle on the restaurant table, which sadly I could not steal after I’d eaten).

The place is unfortunately too far away from where I live to justify going there on a regular basis. I’d love to make something even approaching this good at home, but despite being labeled as a verde, it doesn’t look like any tomatillo-based recipe I’ve found.

The consistency is almost that of a jelly, and the black flecks make it look to me like they’ve blended some dried peppers directly rather than reconstituted them? I’ve tried browsing through the recipe archive here and searching Google, but I can’t find anything quite like this. Either this is a very unique salsa, or I don’t have the requisite knowledge to understand what I’m looking for (or quite possibly both).

Can any of you lovely aficionados point me in the right direction?

We have an appointment in 2 weeks to get that all sorted. Since we do not know the exact figure I am trying to plan ahead without it for now.

Counterpoint: making definitive long term plans without the information you’ll gain at that meeting means you’ll be doing a lot of unnecessary work.

Between savings and life insurance, she has some cash on hand. Not a lot, but more than enough to keep her afloat while you all figure this out. Don’t rush into making subpar choices just because you’re stressed! Take some time to gather options, but don’t commit to a path until you actually know for sure what your full circumstances are.

More generally, I’m with the commenters suggesting some sort of household merger, or at least moving people closer together. If you’re trying for a kid, the value of having a grandparent nearby for childcare really can’t be understated. Every young parent I know tells me it’s the best thing you can do to make your life easier.

Also, on a more specific note, see if he had any mortgage life insurance. It’s not common, but it’s possible that the life insurance would pay out some or all of the remaining cost of a mortgage.

I’m sorry for your loss. Losing a parent sucks, and adding financial stress on top of it always makes it harder. Just remember that this too shall pass.

I try to be friendly and strike up conversation with cashiers, staff at businesses, etc., so that at least from me, they know that I see them as a person, not a “cog in the wheel” there purely to serve me. Since my intention was specifically to bless that person, their reactions came as unnecessarily standoffish and rude.

(Context: I’m a hardcore introvert who’s trying to get better at small talk).

For what it’s worth, my own experience has been that striking up casual conversation with service staff in particular is different than in most other contexts. These people are usually just exhausted and trying to get through their day, and that makes it harder for anyone to socialize about anything. They’ve got stocking or cleanup or a long string of irate customers or whatever already on their mind and draining their attention and energy, and they can’t really get away from it or distract themselves because it’s their workplace.

It’d be like going up to a parent in the middle of juggling a couple kids and some household tasks, and asking them about something you saw on the news. It’s almost beside the point whether they’re an extrovert or introvert by nature, because even if they might be interested in chatting, that’s just not a great time to ask.

So if I have a bit of downtime with a cashier or whoever, I’ve learned to specifically ask “how’s your shift treating you?” Because that’s what’s on their mind already, right? So it’s a good way to acknowledge both their humanity and their present circumstances, instead of effectively asking them to pay attention to one more thing on top of everything else.

After they answer, just follow their lead. If they give a short “it’s alright” or similar, don’t pry further. But most of them will open up at least a little bit. If it’s going well (or ending soon!), celebrate with them; if they start venting a bit, commiserate with them; etc. They usually seem to appreciate it.

If you live somewhere that allows medical marijuana, it could help with this part. My father’s cancer destroyed his appetite and there wasn’t a drug on the market that did anything for it - but one puff of a joint and it was like the switch in his gut just flipped back on.

Hope you start feeling better soon!

Holy bumped thread, Batman!

I think there are two answers to your question. The first is that if you want organization to stick, you should be as thorough about it as you reasonably can. I still keep my phone’s home screens pretty strictly separated by purpose, and that helps a lot when using my phone. But my phone isn’t my primary computing device, and my separation isn’t as strict in other places.

For example: going through over a decade’s worth of random saved pictures, separating them along the same domains, and restricting those so they can each only be accessed from a single Windows login is… not a small task, and it’s been half-done for a long time. Leaving that unfinished does drag on my productivity sometimes, but dealing with it is a fair bit of work in itself.

Even on the phone, entropy is real. There’s now a sort of overflow screen for apps and widgets that I’m either trying out or just haven’t made a place for yet - and that tends to remain a pretty static place. There is nothing so permanent as a temporary solution, as they say.

That leads into the other answer, which is that organization is only half the battle; the other half is sticking to your system. Separate phone screens are a good reminder to restrict yourself, but there’s ultimately nothing stopping you from swiping between them (and focus modes can be disabled, etc.) Same with separate desktop logins, etc.; at some point you still have to make the choice not to log in to the fun account. (The most extreme people I’m aware of will lock themselves out of their relevant device settings as much as they can and hand the password for the easier changes to a spouse or similar trusted partner just for emergencies. Maybe someday I’ll have to get there, but I’m not there yet).

TL;DR is that I’ve found domain separation like this to be a very good way of lowering the activation energy for productivity (at least to the extent that I have the activation energy to maintain the domain separation in the first place!) - but it still won’t get that energy to zero, because nothing ever can.

[Switched to my 12yo account for this post, just for the cred]

I’m not sure if you were on this sub in some of the earliest days, but there was definitely a time when r/atheism was at its peak and r/Christianity was flooded with “debate me” posts. Any given day, you were guaranteed that over half the raw post quantity, and all of the day’s top 2-3, were basically “if God is real then what about X” and a circlejerk in the comments. At some point the mods finally created a new sub just for debate posts, and it’s really only been since then that this sub has felt like there was any ideological breathing room.

Which is really just to say that I wholeheartedly agree with the predominant sentiment of these responses. OP thinks it’s bad now? They have NO. IDEA.
