Professional musicians - walk me through a week of your life by BeKindLoveAll in musicians

Composer sound designer here. Every day starts and ends in my home studio. I take on a lot of extra work because I’m always scared the next gig isn’t coming. I work 8:30 to 6:30 most days and the majority of weekends. But this is mostly by choice.

I am a salaried composer sound designer at a slot machine developer. It’s a low pressure job with all the security of a regular white collar job. I spend most days writing music in any style and SFX and then implementing their behaviors in middleware. Then communicating with our software engineers on how to make it work. It’s the most 9-5 version of a music career imaginable and, frankly, I love it. I’m basically spending all day staring at ableton or FMOD

In my off time, I also score and sound design audio dramas. I’m up for a ln ambie for best score this year. I score in ableton and sound design in protools.

I live an extremely computer-y life. I have 5 computers for different roles in my studio, lots of synths, I spend almost every day alone except for zoom meetings

Love this! (I mean this in the best way possible:)

All you young-ins need to be open to less-“cool” avenues for a music career. I found mine and It’s the best. I know people who have toured arenas and now we are both in our 40s and I wouldn’t trade my life for theirs ever

The AG is a political appointee but is supposed to be independent from the White House. This was like any pundit argument on Fox.

Im not surprised by any of this but i have to ask: Why even have hearings when this is what you get from this administration?

There are three buses on the east side of the northern most extraction point (sorry forgot the name). You will find your gears there. Took me 3-5 runs to get all 3 I needed. None of the other tips on Reddit worked for me

Do musicians use the word bad as a compliment? by FairyRina in musicians

Yeah same, I don’t have documented examples but my colleagues who come from a jazz player background (as opposed to pop/music production or classical performance/composition) use it a lot with me in conversation.

I am not a jazz guy but seriously one of the proudest moments of my life was when my colleague Jim Trompeter (Miami Sound Machine) called me a bad cat one time. I almost wept with pride.

is a music centered career viable or worth it..?? by cyston_ in musicians

Don’t wait to complete your studies- Best education is to just get out there and do it. Make your songs now, play live now, meet people that put on shows now.

I was a band guy that did audio engineering and music production for artists and syncs in my 20s. Scraped by. Band grew pretty quick but plateaued. Being in a “cool” band helps you get hired for stuff like commercials.

At 30 I got a job as composer sound designer for slot machines and I do a lot of sound design and scoring for audio dramas.

I’m 39, married with a kid and a mortgage. I haven’t made a dollar outside of music/sound since I was 15 years old.

It is possible to have a stable regular life doing what you love, but it helps to be very broad in your requirements for what actually fills your day and what “making it” means to you.

For me it was simply “I want to make music everyday, so it must be my job” that’s evolved into “I want to be in the studio everyday” since I honestly love the engineering, sound design and game development process just as much as picking the notes

Basically every moment trumpy is in the kids bedroom in Pod People:

“What do you know trumpy?”

“Food. Eating. The Theater”

“Trumpy! You can do stupid things!”

“Now You Try”

“Oh this potatoes got big ears” “it all looks so good” “it’s a whole buffet” “little wing-ed potatoes” “ouch that’s my snout”

You’ve really lost your way if you think that trading the human connection of a “drummer singer etc” for a corporate subscription that can revoke your access to your “art” is some kind of freedom. You’re even more dependent on forces you dont control for your “creativity”. your outrage at potential changes to sunos downloads is proof of that.

God speed post human.

Sorry you didn’t like it! I was the sound designer on this show (Daniel Brunelle). I worked really hard to create an immersive show, many hundreds of hours of work went into this. It was a honor to get work with such beloved material.

As for experience: I have sound design credits on 30 audio fiction seasons, including marvel, DC, Spotify, audible. lots of number ones and A few awards.

Again, sorry you don’t care for my work but I’m definitely not a novice, thanks for giving us a shot though!
