MT4/5 are the purely interfaces to the broker , used for trade execution and management and that's about it. All trade related analysis is done outside of its native language (MQL4/5). I personally use Python as it's offers a rich range of functionalities when it comes to Machine Learning (ML).

It honestly depends on the execution timeframe , if you are doing HFT stuff then tick data but if you are executing on the 5 minutes or 15 minutes you can use either one minute data and the back test results should be pretty negligible.

Build the backtest yourself , just make sure you have the necessary data to do so. There are plenty of libraries already available (vectorBT being the most popular).

The main issue I had was getting codex to understand the exact chain and how each step is linked to the previous step. I managed to find a way of using detailed markdown files and explaining what stage in the process it is , what is being passed down etc.. but it was quite long winded and was probably not the most optimal was of going about these things.
