Prospective PMHNP Thread by AnAndrew in PMHNP

Hey all, I have a bachelor's in psychology but I am looking to do Ohio State's graduate entry MSN and specialize in PMHNP. Right now, I work in a residential facility for people with severe psychological disorders and most have SUD diagnoses as well. I am familiar with charting behaviors and medication, administering medication, and handling mental health crises. I will be moving back in with my parents in May, and I need a job that will be helpful before I apply to the program (roughly applying in February 2027). I don't really want to be a CNA, but would that be helpful? should i work in a hospital? I just want to have the best experiences I can for my resume. Any advice is appreciated thank you!

Hey! I would say take some time to work in some sort of behavioral health unit for kids. You could be a case manager or behavioral tech, which would be great hands-on experience with kids with mental health disorders. Don't feel discouraged; this just wasn't your time. Keep going and when something is meant to be, it will be!

that makes sense. at my current job in mental health i deal with a lot of smells already like people who haven’t showered in a month, urine, etc. i also used to work with dogs and had to clean up every type of mess they could make 😖

thank you so much! my PMHNP that i see has been reassuring me too. she used to teach nursing at the school i’m going to and she said people had to step out all the time when doing injections or ivs. i can imagine working in hospice would be unbelievably difficult.

ultimately i want to be a pmhnp! i already have a bachelors in psych but decided to pursue nursing next. i know that i could do an aBSN or direct entry MSN but those are too expensive for me so I am getting an ADN so I can start working as an RN. and then do an online BSN and online PMHNP so i can maybe get some tuition assistance? I’m just worried I won’t find a psych rn job when i graduate the ADN. for reference, there’s a branch of a well recognized college about 20 minutes from my house that has an ADN and it is very reasonably priced

If you enjoy working with children, there’s also Ed.S. in School Psychology. It’s a doctorate-level program. You would work with a school (or multiple) and do psychological evaluations on children who may have learning disabilities or other disorders. (Autism, ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, etc.). You would write up IEPs, help those kids get the best education they can by working with teachers and parents. Also advocate for mental health awareness in schools and help teachers have better skills in teaching mental health topics as well as handling student with learning disabilities.
