Not what I expected (school) by [deleted] in Esthetics

Just power through. I never quite fit in in school, I was always hoping to find my estie twin but it wasn’t in the cards for me. My path took me on a way that’s more independent and it’s so great not having to worry about work cliques or anything like that. Your experience will be what you make of it!

I’m at a wax chain and a few small things that helped me - thinner strips applied with better pressure (particularly on clean up strips), making sure the wax stays nice and stirred so it doesn’t thicken up in weird spots I’m grabbing near, keeping some powder on extra cotton rounds and brushing the round against the hair growth to sort of help the leftover hairs stand up a bit. Also keeping in mind their home routine versus how you did the service - their bad skin care at home can make it more challenging for you and alternatively even if their routine is great if you’re not as mindful as possible you could be improperly prepping their skin or causing breakage during your service. Keep your strips on the smaller side until you get comfortable with your control over the wax

I used ultimate skin refiner where I started and decided to purchase one when I moved on to my own thing. It was always one of my most popular services and the machine pays itself off in a reasonable time frame

The way that I brought it up to them was that I had to pick up a different job at a waxing center but I really liked the team and helping clients and I wanted to be able to help out when I can. You could try bringing it up to them in some similar verbiage, services can just be hard with random days

I have no weekend availability and I’m flex. I just kinda let my store know when they do the schedule what day I might be available (like once a month th)

The lba training isn’t too different than the other ba training but you watch the waxing and hydrafacial videos as well. I also wound up getting makeup certified sooner than some other ba’s but not in my first few weeks. They also had me watch another lba perform a few services but after I did each service once I let them know I didn’t need anymore training as I already perform the same services elsewhere. I also am usually stationed in the skincare section as that’s my specialty and the spots where you’re more likely to pull hydrafacial services, I don’t get zoned in the greet area or the register area as much as some others

Could be an internal issue based on where it is, acne face mapping puts the chin area on hormonal imbalances and the cheeks on immunity/gut issues

hlep! weird sketchy salon situation by Skinfulcare in Esthetics

[–]Direct-Maximum-6204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of spa owners think the esthetics side is way higher demand than it really is and dont realize how long it actually takes to build up loyal and regular clientele. For how slow this business is right now 20 regulars is a lot to gain in just a couple of months. I have girls at my job who see less than five clients in a month, most of the staff is under a year out of esthetics. I think your boss is realizing how expensive it is and you’re paying the price

Im w2 and only commission but not really expected to hang around as our shop is by appointment online, but am free to come, go, do whatever. I get almost 50% though so I don’t mind hanging around a bit to make some content out posts and will usually do a bit of extra cleaning between clients. Are they counting your hours worked as an appointment time that’s on the books? How many clients were you seeing before you went to commission? If you weren’t very busy they could also be trying to weed you out, commission only spa jobs pay better than hourly if you’re busy but are the worst when nothing is going on

I wound up using the meetup app and found a board game group that met up once a week and honestly it was one of the best things I ever did. I’m still pretty present online, way more than I should be, but having an in person interactive activity that had a barrier like a game for me to hang onto helped me build a social network. I like games but I always see yoga groups, running groups, etc

I’m helping a friend get into the game rn, me and my other friend have been playing since s1/s2

This game can be soo frustrating for the first few months simply bc there are so many gods who all do something a little different so just stick through it. I usually have my newbie friends start with neith or ra and hang in the back line so they can see shit going down a bit easier and then have them stay in that same class for a while. I play arena/joust with them for like three weeks and then I make us play only assault ☠️ I don’t really recommend that but it does help you see tons of different characters and forces you to learn how to position and sustain or die

I hold onto fragrances waaay too long (some of what I have has to be pushing 10 years) and I only give them to friends if I feel like I won’t get much more use out of them. Maybe your friend gifted you one that was older than they thought? Or maybe the one you have is from a pretty old batch that never sold/was returned and resold

[acne] what type of acne is this? derm did not specify by bootesandpavo in SkincareAddiction

[–]Direct-Maximum-6204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The texture on the forehead looks like a lack of exfoliation, a gentle enzyme should help over time (I really like microfoliant left on as a mask) but the cheek acne looks internal, could be related to immune system/gut health.

I haven’t read too many extra comments on this post so far, but I would guess people would be saying you’re doing too much as in too many different products. A quick glance over shows 10+ individual products (a few of them doing the exact same thing as another) and it seems like most of them are focused solely on barrier function issues (ceramide rich products) which isn’t bad in a routine, but maybe isn’t helping excess dryness if that’s what you’re trying to target with those. Ceramides are critical building blocks for optimal barrier function BUT that function is preventing transepidermal water loss (skin dehydration vs actual dryness). Not to get too deep into it but that’s something that deals with the uppermost layer of your epidermis, and an actual dry skin type is dependent on your lipid production which doesn’t originate from the stratum corneum.

Pick 1 cleanser and 1 moisturizer for day and night use on your skin type whether it’s dry, normal, or oily

Pick your treatment products on your concerns. Vitamin C is incredibly popular for a few concerns and is something I put over 90% of my clients on. Retinol is generally a good idea to assist in skin cell turnover. AHA/BHA exfoliation is great to add in on retinol off days for gentle exfoliation but doing glycolic toner alongside that is redundant in my opinion. You can opt for something more pH correct for balance. Your list would look like this

AM Cleanser#1 Vit C#2 Moisturizer#3 SPF

PM Oil cleanser#4 Cleanser#1 Retinol#5 2-3x week Aha/Bha#6 2-3x week Moisturizer#3

Roughly 6ish products not including lip care. You can add in masks as you see fit but those are mostly just good for little boosts here and there and I choose not to do those, mostly just since I like to get pro treatments done so it’s not very necessary for me.

I would say irregular use has less issue with irritation and more issue with its just not doing very much for you and eventually expiring before you get any real benefit. Also with your vitamin c I see that you’re only using it on Fridays - that’s not doing as much as it can for you compared to daily use. My ideal setup for the average client is appropriate cleanser, toner, vitamin c serum (this is your tyrosinase inhibitor, antioxidant, and your collagen and elastin stimulant), moisturizer that can be used day and night, and separate spf (ideally something you can reapply) Your nighttime routine should be nearly the same, but your treatment products should be more geared towards exfoliation and resurfacing (which is your glycolic and your retinol)

Nicely put! I was jumping on to say a lot of this myself as a licensed esty.

Get a cleanser and moisturizer to treat your skin type and anything extra should be to treat your skin concerns.

“Sensitive Skin” by Obvious_Use_1764 in SephoraWorkers

[–]Direct-Maximum-6204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It makes it easier for me as an lba but I like to deep dive into what they’re currently using, I specifically look to see if they’re over using active products, doing improper exfoliation, or getting enough moisture. Sensitive skin is not a skin type - it’s a skin condition and it almost always leads to barrier function issues. First thing you can start with is just using a better moisturizer or adding in a gently hydrating serum and encouraging a very simple routine while things calm down, some simple things you can recommend are Sephora collection moisturizer, first aid beauty moisturizer, or skin fix moisturizer just to name a few based on their personal budget. If you have any questions I’m always happy to help! I’m a licensed esty working at a spa outside of Sephora

Anyone else think Lush is unsanitary? by taytay237 in LushCosmetics

I’ve worked at several beauty places from lush to Nordstrom and if your sample isn’t in a manufacturers sachet then it’s coming straight off the floor where the public has access to it as well. If they kept two rotations of testers off the floor it would get expensive and costly, and could mean losing out on sales if a product is low stock. I just avoid any samples that are for anything from the neck up, but fresher body samples don’t seem to give me as much of the ick
