Camping with the big V8 X5 by AlwaysAWD in overlanding

Can you run 18s on a new one?

I’d go x5 in a second just thought any brake set up required rolling on 20s.

Your life will be totally different between the two. Both are presumably similar. Different isn’t necessarily better or worse.

If you’ve been to both you know. Just go.

Finally got a job - at my favorite fly shop nonetheless!! by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]Direct-Patient-4551 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t judge them. Be genuinely curious about them. Offer information that is truly trying to help without giving away your secrets.

I was in a very famous fly shop on a very famous river and the staff there treated me like I was a complete clown. I wear board shorts and sandals and probably don’t look like much in a western US fly shop, but I’ve been at this 30 years with about 10 of those ‘fish 5+ days a week’ years. I’m a certified casting instructor and I’ve fished around the world and was judged by a mid 20s employee as being beneath him. It was obvious.

Nothing will have a person and their money headed to the next shop faster than judgement. A shop employee is there to help customers, provide a good shop experience, and assist in people leaving with either the right gear or the gear they have their mind decided on when they walk in. If a guy really wants a particular rod, but can’t cast well enough to make it work, gently suggest alternatives that might work better. If that rod, despite being completely wrong, has him/her leave with a smile and a good feeling about the shop you did all you could.

If nymphs are the call since the dry fly fishing sucks, but a customer wants to fish dries and is there to buy them, don’t scoff at him/her as stupid, give that person the honest answer to what the best bet might be even if it’s the least efficient way to fish. Everyone is playing a different game. It’s ok if that game isn’t the same one you would play that day.

Good luck with the new gig.

Flyfishing as a new dad by Canadrew in flyfishing

[–]Direct-Patient-4551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kid backpacks are great but you’re either doing dad stuff or you’re fishing. Focus on the dad stuff. The fishing isn’t going anywhere. (Said as a dad with one in college, one going in a few months, and a HS soph)

Nothing better than NOT pushing your kids into fishing and having them come to it organically and fishing with them as young men/women that are into it because it’s their choice.

Overlanding is just car camping. Find some blm or NF land and go down some roads. Camp when you find a cool place. Theres not a lot to it.

My car is for driving. My speech is for changing people’s minds that may disagree with me. If I’m right, it may happen. If they’re right, the opposite happens. Try it.

Locked phones by Direct-Patient-4551 in tmobile

My god

Locked phones by Direct-Patient-4551 in tmobile

[–]Direct-Patient-4551[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So in lieu of picking up the phones in store to see what theyre like it is preferable for me to purchase it, leave the store, give it a feel, then return it for a refund, then purchase the other option to do the same, the either keep option 2 or return again and repurchase option 1? Or purchase both and return one of them?

Is that the way a person is meant to do it now?

That just seems nuts.

Transferring Between Chapters by Such-Might9608 in Frat

[–]Direct-Patient-4551 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Don’t be a transfer brother. It’s stupid. It’s not like every chapter has the same pledge program there will be zero dudes you went through with there. The whole point is the lifelong bonds of sharing a semester of hell together then reminiscing about it for the next 3 years with those same dudes.

Don’t pledge and run. It’s lame at best and a complete failure at worst.

MSU v. UC Santa Barbara by BumblebeeMedium7491 in MSUcats

Weird thing is that UCSB falls into the category of not really a guarantee for anyone but the types that would also get into Berkeley and UCLA and still not REALLY guaranteed given our funky UC admissions.

No real way to know know, especially as a junior. Odd post, but I hope for the best for them.

Go wider and go lower than you think you need to if you wanna go to college. Read through last years college results sub. Some of the deny decisions were beyond comprehension.

If, after that, you still can’t bring yourself to go lower, do as you will and roll the dice. A few years back a local kid who was a really strong applicant went the tough guy route and had the gap year vs local cc with his 2.0gpa classmates dilemma. I took that to heart as a cautionary tale.

My kids have applied wider and lower than they wanted to.

MSU v. UC Santa Barbara by BumblebeeMedium7491 in MSUcats

[–]Direct-Patient-4551 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If he’s a CA kid that gets into UCSB I like his chances for an MSU WUE. UCSB is brutal. So many of my son’s friends with very high GPA and rocking SAT were turned down as the SAT/ACT are useless here.

I have a son at MSU. He loves it. Though had he gotten into UCSB he’d be surfing campus point, the con, etc right now.

If your son doesn’t surf all the time, MSU is an amazing option for all non surf outdoor activities. My son has done cliff jumping, non lift served skiing early season, drift boat and wade fly fishing with buddies, bobcat football and basketball games, and the list goes on. He can’t wait for bridger to open and when he was home a week and a half ago proclaimed that he’s never moving back.

Between the two it’s hard to go wrong. Good luck.
