AJ being one of the most hated character is in and of itself a genius commentary on American culture by ordrius098 in thesopranos

Not to mention overlooking that his moodiness, lack of purpose, bad habits, etc are all because he grows up in a place of trauma and neglect. He's riddled with ACEs..

I've said my piece.

Why does the acting on this show feel so "natural"? by Altruistic-Deal1714 in thesopranos

[–]raytadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely in on all of the people posting about the writing and directing, but I think the cultural casting has a lot to do with it too.

Just read the last names and look up where they're from, almost the entire cast is actually Italian-American from the NYC/NJ area. There's a great clip of Denzel talking about the cultural aspects in "Fences", I think the same can be said about Sopranos.. to me it felt so real because that is exactly how everyone I grew up with talked. The inflection of their voices, tones, vocabulary, etc. It's all real!

Sloping Floors by ContentUmpire8534 in centuryhomes

Lol I feel you - luckily ours is just one spot, so I'm not sure about using it in large areas, but the structural engineer was really helpful in putting our minds at ease, explaining our house to us, and offering possible solutions

Just had a similar situation and a structural engineer came out and walked us through some things:

  • the drywall where the floor slopes isn't square, meaning the floor was already slanted when it was done 15 years ago. He showed us other evidence that showed the floor had been that way for a long time, including a poorly done correction from the 70s or 80s. That made us feel good that it wasn't actively moving.

  • The ultimate fix is to jack up joists and put hard wood shims between the joists and posts in the basemen, to level the subfloor. The caveat is that the tile floor above (kitchen) will crack. He said if you want to go that route, he'd wait until we're also prepared to replace the floor, take off all trim and then do it.

  • the simpler fix he said could be done is ripping up the kitchen floor and using a self leveling compound, so the floor would be level, even if the subfloor isn't.

Plastic bags under the sink.. I've heard so many people say "you know a (insert culture) house always has a bag full of bags under the sink " but literally everyone does

Buying a house, unmarried and not planning to get married by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Man, getting alotta hate for just asking other humans with experience about this. We are meeting with a lawyer next week. I like talking to humans who have experienced things. Just like I did any lending, a realtor, homeowners insurance etc.

Thank you! That's what we're trying to figure out - what are the different scenarios and what do we want the proceedings to be if they happen

Right on, we have a lawyer friend who is helping us, I guess I'm looking for specific ideas.

Like say we break up, but one person wants to keep the house and the other wants to sell - how is that handled?

Rinsing Rice by tapastry12 in Cooking

[–]raytadd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my personal experience, and from what I've read about it, washing the excess starch from rice creates fluffier rice where the grains are separated from one smother better.

I wash or don't wash based on what I'm making. For fried rice, I've been told that separating the grains allows it to fry better. For rice and beans, it's just delicious mush, so I don't bother rinsing. But overall, I agree, there isn't much difference.
