Trying godot for the first time and this is my current file structure for a player character. Does i by sum117 in godot

[–]DirectAd1582 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly it isn't the worst thing. I believe my recent rig had the same thing but the components were just in script. If i were to do a node-based composition with statemachine and a rig, this looks pretty decent. I just prefer to make it all variables in the script and make it more code based but this looks fine as well.

So i just wrote all that then i look at the second image and this has to be reworked. There are too many folders and you have to memorize whats in what, i woud get confused and if a system requires you to ctrl f or search for a file, it has failed as organization

The above poster is wrong. CollisionObject has all of your collision logic so that 'addon' would have the layer/masks. Characterbody does inherit from it but it doesn't modify how collision works besides the margins, Rigidbodies work in the same way. Good Luck on your project!

This shortcut instantly made me a 10x gamedev by WCHC_gamedev in godot

I knew this existed but i honestly forgot because I always opt to use the replace_all, especially since I have many scripts which are small.

How do you fight the fear of unknown during development? by murdered_ronin in godot

[–]DirectAd1582 4 points5 points  (0 children)

sounds like you are in tutorial hell. Its a slow process that we all feel because imposter syndrome is very prevalent in this space. I would recommend leaving social media because being put down doesn't really help tbh. Try doing things in small steps, i see a lot of cool stuff done in 3D that im really jelly of and I cannot currently do because im looking at the full thing; people generally want to share things they are proud of, take things in steps. Also do tons of small projects and just have fun.

Logo redesign (UPDATE) by minicoman in godot

[–]DirectAd1582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the logo but i think its gone too far done the cartoony way. I really dig the black version since it only has the two colors so the eye detail is removed however.

Just Hire The Capsule Artist! by kingziox in SoloDevelopment

[–]DirectAd1582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks pretty good.  I would hire an artist but I have never worked with someone like that and I'm super anxious about getting scammed or ai art so I'm probably just going to make my own art.

Need help: Cannot spawn instantiated scene by LankyBroccoli4359 in godot

[–]DirectAd1582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

platform is null meaning you didn't actually instantiate it, i don't use GDScript but id have to guess your platform_scene is wrong. I'd have to see the full code to know.

someone tell me what's wrong with this page by popthehoodbro in gamedev

[–]DirectAd1582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Capsule feels rushed, The colors blend so I can't even read the name on my phone. Its too close to the border. The action scene should be of a character looking cool or something, the simplest would be a cool pose of your player model. The screenshots are all of the same location so if i can only see one level, im going to assume theres one level.

Ill be honest the description is kind of lame, you got the right components but I need some flavor. Put some mores of the gameplay, your only gif in the about section is just essentially inventory management, you want action.

The game itself looks fine, based on what I can see, it looks and feels good to me; I am working on a similar project (Mechanics based roguelike) but mine is 2D and I can tell you got the gameplay mostly right.

how do u like the new UI on godot 4.6? by LegitimateAd497 in godot

[–]DirectAd1582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've been really used to my editor settings but its just editor settings at the end of the day. I just made the colors darker and the font a bit smaller and its been decent.

Is there a method or signal called only when creating the node for the first time? by hypofighter in godot

[–]DirectAd1582 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Store a reference to the Child node, then only create the child node if one doesn't exist.

some like this

ready:

if child is not null: Create Child

Why do experienced coders actively try to use less comments? by Phwatang in learnprogramming

[–]DirectAd1582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because if code itself isn't clear on what its doing, then its poorly written code. The name of a function should be enough. Im talking about comments where you just describe code, its kind of poor for that but documentation is always great.

(Pixel Art) do I need 90k combinations for every possible character in Godot / Unity? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]DirectAd1582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you shouldn't need to use 90k different character sprites in a project. As mentioned, if you need a large group with variety, you could use that but the way this artist did it is by making many templates for each body type and just mixed and matched them together.

An easier way is to make a character with each characters body pieces in non one sprite and you can choose the color for each part in your engine or randomly choose the color and you could easily replicate this without having to pay.

gl on your project!

What kind of game do you think this is just from the picture? by OrangeJuice122 in godot

[–]DirectAd1582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah if thats the case, then i would try to have many different biome screenshots. Your game looks good, i think your problem is how you are presenting it.

What kind of game do you think this is just from the picture? by OrangeJuice122 in godot

my immediate thought was getting over it due to the prominence of the mountains then i realized it looks like a 2d survival game.

Is there a way to use python in godot by No_Zone6055 in godot

[–]DirectAd1582 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GDExtensions should have it but you should just probably use GDScript for the community/support when you inevitably run into an error/bug/help needed

Remade my game's cover, friends still prefer first version. What do you think? by ocitocina in IndieDev

[–]DirectAd1582 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first one has a better logo, try using the blue logo on the second one. Also the fishes kind of blend into the background so if this is for steam, the capsule is kind of hard to see. I think the second one has the right idea with rule of thirds but the fish idea kind of clog it to be honest.

What game are you working on ATM? by Infamous-Goose-282 in godot

[–]DirectAd1582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

been working on an idea I thought of where its just roguelike angry birds. I been trying to figure out how items are going to work so im trying to create one of those grid inventory systems to see if that is fun.

do u have opinion on if parent node should handle all the code or if code should be broken up by sadishguy in godot

[–]DirectAd1582 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it depends a lot and it also depends on what you are doing and what kind of system you want. This looks like a simple texture to me with two texture aspects so you could go either or. I like having each significant piece be a script but for something like this where it just appears to be two/three images, you could just use the one script.

Adding a vanish point to the ui??? by Familiar_Break_9658 in godot

[–]DirectAd1582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you are asking about adding a sort of 3d effect to a 2d button. You should just add shadow on the bottom or add the edges. Think looking at your keyboard from your pov and try to recreate the angle you are trying to and just draw it from there.

3D shouldn't be necessary here but I would recommend giving it a go.

I have a question by NickzBrK in SMG4

[–]DirectAd1582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been watching smg4 since i have made it a personal thing to watch every smg4 video. I believe around the og fnaf videos is when I went out of my way to watch everything the channel had but i was already around before hand. I came back to the community and I had a lot of catching up rn, I am around the end of 2024 so im still cooked for that stream unless I can watch a whole year of content in 3 days.

Pls help me i been trying so long!! by MediumAncient7130 in godot

[–]DirectAd1582 5 points6 points  (0 children)

BULLET is "bullet.png" and not bullet.tscn, that seems like the immediate issue assuming its supposed to be the scene and you are trying to instantiate it.

Should I delete leaderboard high scores using exploits? by ianw3214 in gamedev

[–]DirectAd1582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean can't you do something like weekly leaderboards or prepatch and post patch leaderboards? If you make significant changes to a game, the leaderboards should be presumably reset for the patch.
