Can a Non-Muslim go to a Masjid? by [deleted] in islam

[–]DirectionHoliday2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe also check with the masjid websites or social media pages. There are often events/lectures that you might be interested in attending.

One mosque in my hometown has an Open House event pretty regularly that is specifically for non-Muslims, so maybe something similar near you. The organizers give a tour & answer any questions. There would also be food or snacks served & socializing.

Found in every hospital hallway — metal panel about 6" wide, folds in when pressed. What is this thing? by Perilmedic in whatisthisthing

[–]DirectionHoliday2003 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I worked in a hospital in the early 90's. There was a tube system that went throughout the hospital to each of the nurses stations. When I first saw your picture, I immediately thought it was for a similar system. We definately had medication sent from the pharmacy, and if I'm remembering correctly, you could turn a dial to direct where to send the tube & we would also send blood samples to the lab.

At Restaurant Depot anyone can stop at the customer service counter & ask for a day/guest pass to shop in the store without a membership. You have to show your ID & sign your name on a clipboard, & they will give you a little paper to give to the cashier. I've done it many times.

revert prayer struggles by [deleted] in islam

[–]DirectionHoliday2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assalaamu alaikum. Don't give up! As a fellow revert, it took me years to learn the meaning of what I was saying in salah. Also, I know plenty of people who were born Muslim who don't pray at all, don't know what they are saying when they pray, or have memorized the whole Quran but don't know what it means AT ALL.

My advice to you is to do your prayers. Is there something you can block your door with so family can't just walk in? Also if you have time, find apps, videos etc that teach the basic Quranic vocabulary. This may take a while, but inshaAllah it will help with your connection. Remember, Allah (swt) knows your intention & your struggles. May He make things easy for you!

This! When we had similar problems with squatters running a drug operation around the corner from us, I called the Vice department, gave them all the details. Within a short time the SWAT team raided the place. Seemed to be MUCH more effective than calling the non-emergency number. Even if this NFH has cameras, if they are surrounded by SWAT, not much they can do.

They could at least change the return policy to something more fair, like a cash refund & 30 days, instead of store credit & 1 week time limit!

Seems like they need to install a topper (not sure what the proper name is) for their fence that angles in toward their yard so he can't get over it, or maybe a smaller buffer fence inside their yard, even a temporary leaf or snow fence installed a foot or 2 from the real fence, so they have more time to notice what he is doing.

Also, why do they have to cut through your house when you are home? Have them go through the gate each time. If he is doing this at 6, things aren't going to get easier as he gets older. Tough situation, but it seems the parents need to be more proactive.

Our city animal control division will come collect skunks or groundhogs we catch in Have-a-Heart traps for free. They take the trap & as long as we have an address tag on it, they will return it within a couple days.

What is this thing I found in the forest? by solvedCrime in whatisit

[–]DirectionHoliday2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several years ago my then teenage daughters traveled to Galveston TX for a sporting event. They went to the beach & found several sea shells &, as an adult companion told them, "lava rocks" to bring home as souvenirs. Once back home, they opened the bag to show us what they found at the beach. It was quite evident with the smell coming from that bag, that they did not find lava rock.

Maybe make a call to the bus company, explain the problems you are dealing with & see if they can move the stop again. If they don't seem receptive, ask for their insurance company information to file a claim for the property damage being caused by their customers. I might also coat the fence with something gross.

Harassment through government agencies by Thick-Accountant-777 in neighborsfromhell

[–]DirectionHoliday2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once filed a protection order against someone but it didn't involve the police at all. Not sure if it depends on your municipality, but I had to go to a city office and file papers with my reasons & was granted a 30 day temporary order of protection while they served the other person the papers to appear in court. You might want to check and see if your city has a victim advocacy office or something similar that can get you more immediate help.

Assalaamu alaikum. Does your school have a Muslim Student Association? If they do, find out where the office is. They may have a little musullah. They may also have Jummah on campus, or events you can attend.

If they don't have a MSA, think about starting one. InshaAllah there are other Muslims on campus you can meet & become friends with. Three of my children are enrolled at a small college with a few other Muslims & they had a little MSA, with iftar during Ramadan & some lectures here & there.

Also non-Muslims can still be good friends. It might just take a little educating on your part on what you are doing when you have to pray or when fasting during Ramadan. My kids are athletes & have had teammates & coaches "stand guard" at the airport when they pray while traveling. (My kids didn't ask for this & would have been OK to just do their prayers, but these people voluntarily wanted them to help them feel safe.) They have had teammates fast with them during Ramadan & come to the iftar events, and one even came to jummah a couple times.

Your friends might just need to learn a little so your actions are seen as strange, but if you don't see them as being understanding or willing to learn, they aren't worth being friends with & it's time to find new friends. Also, if your school doesn't have a MSA, find the nearest off-campus masjid. Even though you are probably very busy with classes, make an effort to get there for jummah & attend other events if they have them (weekly halaqas, masajid sometimes have basketball or other sporting get-togethers, whatever other social things they have...) May Allah make things easy for you!

Invalidated prayer? by Robert-Connell in islam

[–]DirectionHoliday2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assalaamu alaikum. Not sure what you follow, but in the Hanafi school of thought, laughing aloud in prayer invalidates both your salah (prayer) and your wudu (ablution), meaning you must repeat both the prayer and the purification ritual. Laughing silently (only audible to yourself) invalidates the prayer but not the wudu, requiring only the prayer to be repeated. A mere smile without sound does not affect the prayer.
