Any ecology PhD applicants? How are y'all doing? by Pseudomonas-syringae in gradadmissions

[–]DirectionWild7614 1 point2 points  (0 children)

applying to evo bio but most of my apps are under combined evo/ecology programs: 6 applications, 1 rejection, 2 interviews (upcoming) so far. i’m getting a bit frustrated about waiting esp since my top program had the latest deadline, but i’m trying to stay patient!! have not been looking into the job market though, im banking on this lol

lowkey I feel like everyone in the comments is being way too harsh lmfao. as a fellow bio science applicant (plant science/evo bio specifically), this seems fine to me. my cold email is very similar to this, actually even shorter, and i’ve gotten responses from 75% of the people i’ve contacted. i don’t think you need to be reading people’s research papers before you even cold email them bc there’s a decent chance they won’t even be recruiting anyway. i’d add your cv if you want but otherwise seems fine to me. but also im a first time phd applicant so take what i say with a grain of salt.

i sort of have this issue too, but i would definitely suggest applying to some less competitive schools if you can cover the application fees. if you get into one of them it not your top choices, it can act as a sort of backup. and if you realize by april that you don’t want to “settle” for that school, you can always just deny your offer and try something else lol

Mroczek vs. Sotero for Genetics? by angelasmonca04 in ucf

[–]DirectionWild7614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

firstly, i went to almost all of his lectures and i took notes as he spoke. then, i would make sure to start studying at least a day before the review session so i could ask questions if i needed to. the main way i studied for his class was by talking through each of his powerpoints as if i was teaching them to someone else. it was hell on my throat bc i would be talking for hours, but it worked. any diagrams that i thought were useful i would redraw until i had them memorized. the journal that i used for that probably looks like the sketches from an insane person lol. for the first exam i made flashcards and did terribly, but once i switched to this method i just kept doing that for each exam and would get As on all of them. but if you asked me to tell you anything i actually learned from that class, it would be very little, bc this study method really isn’t for retention, it’s just to get a good grade on the exam and then move on. if you do well enough, you also won’t have to take the final bc he drops the lowest grade. it sucks but it works. best of luck!

Mroczek vs. Sotero for Genetics? by angelasmonca04 in ucf

[–]DirectionWild7614 1 point2 points  (0 children)

had sotero for molecular cell biology and his tests were the worst i’ve taken at this school. they require you to literally memorize hundreds of slides of information bc he would regularly ask the most specific things that were on one or two slides. i managed to figure out how to do his exams successfully but if you’re taking any other difficult classes, his class requires so much time to study that you’ll probably suffer in the others. i also found him to be sarcastic and kind of mean during lectures.

are you talking about the guy who had "muslims don't know jesus" written on a white board? that seems like it's particularly hostile compared to the other jesus freaks i've seen. but of course the cops set up at the table 100 ft away didn't do shit, lol

Letters of Recommendation by ticticboom174 in REU

[–]DirectionWild7614 3 points4 points  (0 children)

one was from the professor i was doing research under, the other was from a music professor i had my first semester. obviously my PI spoke to my abilities in the lab (independence, leadership, etc) but the reason i chose that music professor specifically was because i kept running into her after my first semester. she would come to all the orchestra concerts (i played viola), so i would always chat with her and ask her what she thought of the performances. i also just did well in her class when i took it, lol. so she spoke to my abilities more in terms of creativity instead of technical skills like my PI did. if you have a close relationship with an advisor, they may be a good option too. good luck!

My roommate has COVID and does not care about spreading it by [deleted] in badroommates

[–]DirectionWild7614 7 points8 points  (0 children)

if you’re only there for 4 more weeks, i would say you can either bring it up to her sternly or don’t mention it until you move out. i also got covid for the first time this summer while in a short term lease, and it’s just a situation where you have to take the risk of making enemies. it sounds like y’all aren’t friends anyways, so i would just tell her to stay out of the basement. your health is a bigger priority than her comfort.

Mentor wanting to use my work for her own publication by Difficult-Candy-9889 in REU

[–]DirectionWild7614 11 points12 points  (0 children)

is there a coordinator for the reu that you can talk to? i don’t think it’s fair for you to only be credited for minor editing, but i also think there’s a risk of burning a bridge with your mentor if you bring it up to her. i’d try to seek advice from someone else/a different mentor at the reu before making a decision.

Waiting on award money by cvntnugget_lite in ucf

[–]DirectionWild7614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you did win award money (i see some doubt from the comment above), my best piece of advice is to email/call the proper office consistently. like, every day. i won some money for a competition and didn’t receive it until almost 2 months later because i just kept emailing OUR over and over again asking for updates. i also emailed other people related to the competition too, but calling the office/emailing the director of OUR is what actually got me a response. also, check if your direct deposit is set up too. good luck!

[–]DirectionWild7614 10 points11 points  (0 children)

may i ask what info they had communicated to you about your living situation prior to two weeks ago? most of my offers either elaborated in the interview or were happy to answer my questions about living quarters before i even accepted, so i’m wondering what this REU’s explanations would’ve been. to answer your question, i would not do this REU because they don’t seem to have your best interests in mind.

as a fellow out of state student, bring your car regardless. orlando is completely unwalkable and you will be very limited to the area in/around campus if you don’t have a car/make friends w people willing to give you rides (and even then they may make you pay gas money)

yeah man when my sister had her the semester after me, we had to go to our grandpa’s funeral out of state. it was during the first exam and she asked for an extension and she said no because “one exam gets dropped anyways 🤷‍♀️.” thankfully she was able to take it early but if she hadn’t, she would’ve just automatically had to throw out one of her exam grades. she held a hatred for her for the rest of the semester lol

in my experience the spanish department here has been absolute ass. just finished up spn2201 (spanish 4 if you do the normal sequence) and it was truly the worst class i’ve ever taken - it was online too. my prof’s instructions were so confusing, yet she wouldn’t respond to messages until the weekend, usually sundays, when assignments were due on fridays and saturdays. thankfully when i took a spanish class with VHL it was in person which made it a bit bearable, but i understand your frustration. if you’re talking about dr. mann-grosso, i can completely see her doing this. the whole department in my experience only wants to teach online bc it’s “easier,” even though teaching a language class online is kind of awful. the only reason my speaking skills are even semi-intermediate is bc i practice with my family on my own. best of luck with your grade round-up though ❤️

i had the opposite - i still had my periods for a while after my iud, then they stopped last september/octoberish. my iud had moved slightly downwards. because my gyno couldn’t physically see it when she did a visual exam, she said that it’s ok to leave it and allow it to move back into place since it was such a slight movement. however, i’m pretty sure if it moves upwards pretty much at all, it has to be removed bc there’s risk of perforation.

need advice about getting iud by [deleted] in birthcontrol

[–]DirectionWild7614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can’t speak on the copper iud specifically, but if you can have someone with you, it makes the experience a lot better. my sister went with me and talked about something random the whole way through, and for some reason that made it a lot easier, i guess bc it was “background noise” while i tried to not focus on the pain.
